Abstract
This article explores the decolonization of heritage politics in 1970s Hong Kong. It firstly revisits recent scholars' work on Hong Kong heritage politics and the transformation of Hong Kong's cultural identity. It shows how people's perceptions of their colonial heritage and history in Hong Kong have changed since the 1970s. Secondly, it outlines the city's cultural heritage policy framework after the 1967 Riots, inspired by the Cultural Revolution. It analyses how the colonial government intentionally rebranded the city's colonial heritage as an anachronism to justify its new narrative of Hong Kong and its cultural identity in the 1970s. It also employs the demolition of the former Kowloon Railway Station building in the 1970s as a case study to discuss how the colonial government decolonized local colonial structures through its new cultural heritage policy approach after the Riots. Finally, by employing the case study of the demolished Central Star Ferry Pier in the 2000s, this article argues there was a change in people's perceptions of the city's colonial history in the early postcolonial period of Hong Kong. A more active notion of Hong Kong's cultural identity is also being articulated in the uncertain future due to the city's recent rapid political and social changes influenced by the mainland authority.

The management of construction and demolition materials is a problem being tackled by many government agencies worldwide. The problem is particularly acute in Hong Kong due to rapid economic development and urban renewal over recent decades, and the situation is aggravated by the dense population on a small plot of usable land. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is implementing many initiatives in both public and private sectors to handle the ever-increasing municipal problem. Some of these strategies and practice are reviewed in this paper. Godfrey Yeung investigates the causes and socio-economic effects of foreign direct investment in the Dongguan municipality of southern China during the 1990s. As the first comprehensive research based on primary quantitative and qualitative data undertaken in Dongguan, it illustrates that the inflow of foreign capital has both 'desirable' and undesirable' socio-economic effects. Yeung proposes a new 'dynamic symbiosis' paradigm of foreign direct investment in order the illuminate the complex political and socio-economic relationships of the area.

AbstractHow do Asian Americans think about their ethnic origin? How do ethnic identities affect political preferences? Drawing on interviews with a diverse group of Asian Americans, I provide a nuanced understanding of how they think about their ethnic origin and pan-ethnic identities. The findings reveal that ethnicity plays a significant role in shaping electoral preferences, as Asian Americans exhibit coethnicity preferences, conditional on partisanship. Moreover, I uncover several factors that have been underexplored in the existing literature, including transnational ties, news consumption, and political preferences on foreign policies related to their home country. This article provides a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Asian American identities by showing that the ethnic origin roots of Asian Americans can have significant influence on their political interests and candidate preferences.

Lead firms play a dominant role in the governance structure of conventional global production network (GPN) analyses but this framework is not fully applicable in sectors where (new) regulations, technologies and subsequent market changes have a disruptive effect on its governance structure. This paper proposes an analytical framework to examine how disruptive effects of industrial megatrends in forms of new regulations and technologies and the subsequent market changes could alter the competitive dynamics between lead firms and their tier-I suppliers. Although lead firms are becoming more specialized and highly efficient in specific product segments, they may not always have inter-firm control over their tier-I suppliers. GPN boundaries become more permeable when there is an external shock, such as new regulations or massive shifts in consumer demand, or the entrance of an entirely new lead firm, possibly due to a technological breakthrough or innovative use of existing technologies in a product. This external shock could have disruptive effects on the GPN, from the exit of current lead firms to the entrance of new tier-I suppliers or lead firms. Consequently, a reconstituted GPN with a newly established boundary is then produced. Applying the analytical framework to the automotive industry, it is argued that selected (and new) systems suppliers with expertise in micro-electronics are not only in a prime position to capture the value generated by the increasingly stringent regulatory environment on safety and environmental standards, but also more resilient than the incumbent automakers to three emerging megatrends: electrification, digitalization and autonomous driving. Are American elected officials equally responsive to all Asian subgroups? Asian American is one of the major racial/ethnic groups in the United States and is currently the fastest-growing racial group. However, studies on the representation of Asian Americans are limited. Studies also commonly view Asian Americans as a single, homogenous group and omit the heterogeneity within this unique population. I argue that to understand any racial/ethnic group better, we should look into the ethnic subgroups and examine them as separate populations. I conducted an audit experiment in this study and sent emails to more than 2000 state legislators, manipulating senders' names to represent different Asian subgroups. I find that none of the subgroups received a lower response rate than white constituents, regardless of the officials' racial group and partisan affiliation. However, Korean constituents were less likely to receive a friendly response than white and Vietnamese constituents. The results also show that Latino and Black legislators were less friendly in their emails and less responsive than their Asian and white counterparts. This study sheds light on the heterogeneity of racial/ethnic groups, which scholars have routinely overlooked.
