Abstract
The literature on East Asian developmental states has mostly focused on economic policies; few studies have investigated how developmentalism affects urbanisation. This study addresses this gap by analysing the formation of a housing system by the developmental state and the role of the housing sector in the transition from an economic miracle in the 1960s to stagnation after the 1990s. Wang, Lee, and Chen (2017) argued that Taiwan's state bureaucrats played a gradually diminishing role in directing the market. This article takes a different approach by arguing that the government's interventions on housing intensified after the 1990s; housing finance sectors were formalised, squatters were removed, and interventions based on market mechanisms were employed to stimulate the housing market. However, the lack of an effective state intervention on housing made speculation difficult to control and created an obstacle to economic development. Such housing speculation increased social inequality.

Abstract
In 2008, Taiwan's cinema began to get back on its feet after an extended lull, with several directors successively releasing critically acclaimed first works. Compared with the well-known Taiwan New Cinema, this new film trend works within the conventions of genre and often focuses on local issues and ordinary life. In doing so, critics and scholars call it Post-New Cinema. Yet, its naming brings difficulties to our understanding on this epoch-making wave, since it neither intends to innovate the paradigm and the framework established by New Cinema, nor does it completely inherit the legacy left by it. Therefore, these uncertain interpretations motivate us to review the legitimacy of this naming. This essay will evaluate firstly the genealogy from the Taiwan New Cinema to the Post-New Cinema in aesthetic and historical–cultural representation, to further propose the paradox about the naming of Post-New Cinema. Secondly, we attempted, by comparing the two most representative films of the two periods, Cape No. 7 and A City of Sadness, an initial look at the transition and the transformation in terms of aesthetical demonstration, historical representation, and ethnic politics, to argue that a subtle change in identity has been created in Taiwanese cinema since 2008.

As governments put in place governance frameworks for technology development, differing models are emerging that reflect the contrasting preferences of the US, Europe, and China. The pivotal issue is reconciling accountability and human rights. Should Singapore re-think its approach to technology innovation governance?

Singapore, with its trusted data and analytics hub ambitions, may have lessons to learn from the slew of recent moves by the US. Federal agencies made some of the country's largest telecommunications and technology companies accountable for mismanagement of US citizens' personal data.

This dissertation offers an in-depth look into the paradoxical existence of patients who were cured but still sick. Modern treatment for Hansen's Disease (HD) redefined the disease as a curable one and successfully eradicated it from Taiwan. Despite these, some patients remained sick. Issues regarding the existence of these patients were often complicated by the symbolic meanings of the disease as well as the protracted institutionalization of patients. In the last ten years, the renovation of the HD hospital in Taiwan has attracted the public's attention, which in turn has raised the Taiwanese government's awareness of the human rights issue of patients. However, the actual relationship between patients' experiences and the medicine that treated them remain largely unstudied. The dissertation is based on historical data, interviews with patients and medical workers, and two years of ethnographic research in the HD hospital in Taiwan that has accommodated HD patients since 1930. I examine the processes through which a synthetic compound became a cure for HD and facilitated medical understandings and practices that emphasized HD's etiology. I also examine how patients continue to live with a stigma resulting from the interplay between the new medical understandings of HD and their body-biography trajectories already shaped by the disease. To live with bodies without sensations, patients have to constantly attend to the mechanics among the various objects involved when using their bodies for conducting daily activities. These efforts for managing stigma and disabilities were invisible in the current medical practices for HD, which were organized around mass treatment. The main argument is that the same change in medicine that led to a redefinition of disease and enhanced the overall efficacy of medical practices may also render individual patients' experiences irrelevant. Life after being "cured" is still pretty difficult to the patients I studied. Only to these individuals, in whose life time an effective treatment for HD became available, did the disease become something that could have been cured and yet continued to shape one's identity and daily lives. However, patients have come up with strategies to make sense of their sickness, cope with disabilities, and make serviceable a medicine that does not see what they have as an authentic disease--strategies sometimes including nothing else but to face and live with the sickness they still have.

In the contemporary world, art education provides the possibilities for the development of pupils' creativity, critical thinking, and critical attitude towards art and culture. However, "the disenchantment of the world" makes "aesthetics" a need to be continuously defined in the present age. The narrow and one-sided nature of traditional aesthetics has become increasingly apparent, and it is difficult for the ideals of beauty and art to provide reliable support for the development of aesthetics. In the late 1980s, perceptual knowledge became a frequently discussed and meaningful keyword in aesthetics research and education. Creativity comes from perceptual knowledge. Creativity is based on popular art training and aesthetic education. Creative thinking should be achieved through the process of diversification to form an area with multi-faceted and abstract structure. Because art has an essential quality (Timbre), I proposed a visual art and aesthetics project based on the implementation of artistic objectives in the teaching of visual arts and the aesthetic encounter of politics, society, history, culture and the environment. The experimental programme was performed at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. The results of the research confirmed that implementation of aesthetic perception education can have a positive impact on students' views of art and on the overall popularity of related learning. Examples of education in aesthetic experience and aesthetic perception can be used as guidelines for the implementation of art and multicultural education. Well-rounded and open-minded education (from politics, society, history, culture and the environment, etc.) has become the door to the continuous development of intelligence and thinking.

This case study offers a new insight into application of multiple-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) to social identity issues in the context of talent management. This study used MCDM to help a high-tech company to identify potential talents in its sale and marketing team (n = 54). MCDM adjusted subjective information consisted of intangible organisational political issues into a transparent, objective benchmark. The transparency and consistency of this evaluation process reduced potential social identity disruption between individuals or groups. Furthermore, the involvement of multiple decision-makers (both managers and employees) in the talent identification procedure enhanced employees' motivation for further development.

As AI matures, constraints to its future progress are also emerging. The question is whether this paradox will lead to another "AI winter" or provide the necessary brakes for a potential runaway train. What could this mean for Singapore's ambition to be a "living laboratory" for global AI solutions?

Purpose
The purpose of this study was constructed a behavioral observation scale for avoiding food waste from the point of view of Chinese cuisine, used as an evaluation tool to examine food waste in the process of food preparation for hospitality students in Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach
The status of food handling in the preparation process was understood through a literature review and interviews. In addition, the indicators that may cause food waste behaviors were established, and the observation and self-evaluation scales of food waste behaviors in the preparation process were developed.
Findings
Avoiding water waste, removing excessive edible parts, avoiding waste on seasonings, avoiding cooking for too long and avoiding water stains in the cleaning process were considered by both the observers and the students as items for improvement in the cooking process. The results of this study will help in understanding the intervention in the teaching practice of avoiding students' food waste behaviors.
Research limitations/implications
This study can only be based on the test results of the current observation behaviors. Meanwhile, many factors need to be taken into consideration, such as the differences in the amount of knowledge students have about food waste, the differences in preparation techniques, and other different factors, which may lead to differences in the research results.
Originality/value
The behavioral observation and self-evaluation behavior scales of "exploring food waste behaviors in the preparation process" were developed and implemented for the current status. The differences between the results of the observation scale and the self-evaluation scale were compared. In addition, the behaviors that may cause students' food waste were pointed out. Then, the direction of the teaching content was formulated, and the curriculum plan integrating the content of avoiding food waste into teaching was evaluated. Furthermore, the scales can be applied to kitchen staff handling food materials to understand the current situation of their food handling, which can be used as a driving tool for restaurants to reduce food waste.

PurposeSexual harassment is often the result of the abuse of power by perpetrators over victims. This study investigated the effects of customer reward power, customer coercive power, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and personal factors on full-time life insurance salespeople's intentions to report customer sexual harassment.Design/methodology/approachThis study collected quantitative data through questionnaire surveys. A total of 743 valid questionnaires were collected.FindingsTwo types of customer sexual harassment (quid pro quo and hostile work environment) were evaluated. PBC was found to be the most influential factor affecting whistleblowing intentions. Regression analysis indicated that customer reward power significantly affected whistleblowing intentions toward quid pro quo customer sexual harassment. The male salespeople experienced stronger customer coercive power than did the female salespeople.Originality/valueNot every society views customer power and customer sexual harassment in the same manner. By examining Taiwan's life insurance salespeople and including the concept of customer power, this study broadens the understanding of whistleblowing intentions toward the two types of customer sexual harassment.
