(SWP-Bmt)

Using the example of the 1985 Trans World Airlines (TWA) airjacking, the substance of print media volume coverage is analyzed, evaluating the success terrorists had in: (1) spreading fear & anxiety through the media coverage of their actions; (2) getting their views, demands, & philosophies publicized; & (3) gaining respectability & legitimacy through effective control of the media. Three leading US newspapers -- the New York Times, Washington Post, & the Los Angeles Times -- were examined using the Nexis database & the InfoTrend computer program, analyzing all articles devoted to the coverage of terrorist incidents -- over 17 days. Paragraphs were counted that gave special attention to the terrorists by mentioning them by name. Goal recognition was evaluated by counting the paragraphs where terrorists or their sympathizers were directly or indirectly quoted. Respectability & legitimacy were evaluated through paragraphs that mentioned terrorists or their sympathizers being interviewed or holding press conferences or meetings. Results show that the three papers were strikingly similar in coverage, giving terrorists extensive copy. They did not devote as high a % of their sections to the terrorists as the electronic media; however, when considering the time limitations to TV reporting, both must be considered equally culpable. 4 Tables. Trends in PO on public assistance programs for the poor in the US are discussed via analysis of major survey research conducted from the 1930s to 1980s on national cross-sectional samples of at least 1,000 Rs. The current Reagan administration's lack of support for social welfare has resulted in a liberal rebound from the conservative trends of the 1970s. Current PO favors a position wherein both individuals & the government take responsibility for dealing with economic hardship. 13 References. K. Hyatt
