The role of the social sciences in achieving the goals of perestroika (restructuring) -- ie,to qualitatively upgrade the SE, political, & cultural life of Soviet society -- is examined. Focus in on the social sciences' ability to help modern socialism to "know itself," primarily through conducting ongoing research & constructing holistic, "working drawings" of the restructuring process. The field of economic sociology, which explores the structure & behavioral patterns of the human factor in economics, is particularly useful in this attempt. The discipline's theoretical, cognitive, & applied functions are described, & four types of research problems to be tackled in the future are outlined. Objectives of the Communist Party's social policy are reviewed, & a sociological perspective is offered on who the next stage of socialism is likely to develop. 1 Figure, 1 Photograph. K. Hyatt
