In this autoethnographic essay I share some reflections appealing to the tensions and contradictions of interculturality or the intercultural model and its materialization in educational policies and practices. Through a constructive-interpretative analysis, I dialogue with some researchers, academics and/or activists' work, I analyze an institutional document that is representative of the educational community of Catalonia and I write from a triple position as a researcher, counselor and learner who has gone through the educational system being la china. Throughout the text, I discuss the predominance of Eurocentric thinking, its language and its institutionalized practice in both education and academia. Likewise, I appeal to a place of epistemic theorization and political-practical application that continues to exclude the nonwhite population. This contribution aims to visibilize of some expressions of institutional racism in education, in order to make it a matter of reflection and discussion for the educational and research community ; En este ensayo autoetnográfico comparto algunas reflexiones apelando a las tensiones y contradicciones de la interculturalidad o el modelo intercultural y su materialización en políticas y prácticas educativas. "Since the beginning of the twentieth century, modern Chinese intellectuals, reformers, revolutionaries, leftist journalists, and idealistic youth had often crossed the increasing gap between the city and the countryside, which made the act of "going to the countryside" a distinctively modern experience and a continuous practice in China. Such a spatial crossing eventually culminated in the socialist state program of "down to the villages" movements during the 1960s and 1970s. What, then, was the special significance of "going to the countryside" before that era? Going to the Countryside deals with the cultural representations and practices of this practice between 1915 and 1965, focusing on individual homecoming, rural reconstruction, revolutionary journeys to Yan'an, the revolutionary "going down to the people" as well as going to the frontiers and rural hometowns for socialist construction. As part of the larger discourses of enlightenment, revolution, and socialist industrialization, "going to the countryside" entailed new ways of looking at the world and ordinary people, brought about new experiences of space and time, initiated new means of human communication and interaction, generated new forms of cultural production, revealed a fundamental epistemic shift in modern China, and ultimately created a new aesthetic, social, and political landscape. As a critical response to the "urban turn" in the past few decades, this book brings the rural back to the central concern of Chinese cultural studies and aims to bridge the city and the countryside as two types of important geographical entities, which have often remained as disparate scholarly subjects of inquiry in the current state of China studies. Chinese modernity has been characterized by a dual process that created problems from the vast gap between the city and the countryside but simultaneously initiated constant efforts to cope with the gap personally, collectively, and institutionally. The process of "crossing" two distinct geographical spaces was often presented as continuous explorations of various ways of establishing the connectivity, interaction, and relationship of these two imagined geographical entities. China's growth miracle over the past 30 years has propelled it to become the world's second largest economy and potentially the largest in the following years. This book examines China's experience on economic reform, trying to find the reasons for the sustainable and rapid development and provide insights into the study of economic theories. From the perspective of political economics, this book elaborates on China's socialist market economy which was officially confirmed as the goal of the country's economic reform in 1992. It expounds on China's economic model, the relationship between socialism and market economy, as well as the establishment and improvement of socialist market economy in China, deepening the studies in the laws governing China's economic development. Then, it explores the gradual reform, the reform of state-owned enterprises, and the relationship between governments and market, all of which are crucial to the success of China's economic reform. Finally, based on the analysis above, this book discusses the reasons for the constant and rapid development of China's economy. With detailed analysis on the reform experience and theoretical implications, this book will appeal to scholars and students studying China's economy, and contribute to the development of economic theories.

AbstractClassical urban geography theories determine the distribution of population, production and economic activities on geospatial features. Under this assumption, peripheral regions are rarely prosperous. Depopulation, weak industrial and employment structure and inefficient and fragmented land use form a negative feedback loop. Within the context of economic revitalization of peripheral area, this paper introduces an innovative Chinese practice on de‐peripheralization on the basis of two months of empirical research on the 'two‐stage land demutualization reform' in Zhaoqing, a city located at the peripheries of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The reform successfully bonds the local stakeholders, stimulates the economy and resolves the land value capturing issue in urbanization. Local farmers in Zhaoqing founded an investment company with agricultural fields demutualized into stock shares and collaborated with the local government in improving local infrastructures and promoting economic investment in the secondary/tertiary sector. An in‐depth profile of the public–private partnership mechanism is collected through semi‐structured interviews conducted with locals. The results of the policy evaluation show that the rural land capitalization and inclusive design of the partnership regime removed the institutional barriers to socio‐economic development and brought attraction to the underprivileged area. The proposed joint development and value sharing policy framework contribute to the literature of institutional renovation for economic de‐peripheralization, especially for practices in land readjustment and zoning, resident resettlement, local employment provision and value capturing.

With the flourishment of tanci 彈詞 performance, flower registers (huapu 花譜) that ranked and catalogued female tanci performers began to emerge in late Qing Shanghai. In this article, I treat the writing of flower registers as an act of collecting—a cultural practice of gathering, selecting, and publicizing artistic tastes. Focusing exclusively on the shuyu 書寓 entertainers in huapu discourses, I investigate the dynamics between the shuyu entertainers and the huapu writers: how they competed to (re)define the new ideals in beauty, talent, and virtue. Amid the networks of literati connoisseurship, urban legends, and new business models, female tanci performers were active participants of the huapu writing practice, both catering to literati expectations and subtly changing the rules of the game. By examining the various huapu discourses, I aim to gain a more nuanced reading of gender representation in late Qing Shanghai.

In the article the author makes an attempt to localize the semiotic theory of Yuri Stepanov into the Chinese humanitarian scientific tradition, in which signs are considered as the main tool for the transmission of cultural concepts. Semiotics as an independent field became the subject of study of the Chinese linguists in the late 80ies of the last century, during the beginning of the policy of reform and openness. Chinese researchers in their papers refer to the significant works of outstanding representatives of the Russian semiotic school, namely, the works of M. Bakhtin, R. Jacobson and Y. Lotman. However, in the Chinese linguistics, according to the author, the theory of evolutionary-semiotic series of cultural concepts developed by Yuri Stepanov is insufficiently presented today. It has broad prospects of application to the Chinese semiotic space and interpretation of its cultural signs and codes. Purpose
Since the implementation of reform and opening up, China has made remarkable achievement in terms of economic reform and development. China's path, as well as its experience, has simultaneously gained worldwide concerns. Developing the market economy against the backdrop of socialism brings conclusions from China's achievement, deepens knowledge of China's pathway and builds a socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics. That is the way to realise a basic socialist system, especially with regards to the organic integration of public ownership and market economy. This combination determines the future of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the success or failure of economic restructuring. Therefore, it requires consideration and in-depth study. The paper aims to discuss these issues.


Design/methodology/approach
The goal of economic restructuring is to establish and develop the socialist market economy. Its main content can be summarised in two parts. The first is the relationship between plan and market or government and market. The second is compatibility or combination of public ownership and market economy. The former is one of the superficial problems, relevant to resource allocation method or economic operation mechanism. The latter stems from deep-rooted problems, represented by ownership or the underlying economic system. These two work together to form the organic integrity of socialist market economy where both similarities and contrasts coexist.


Findings
The shared ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the lofty goals of communism will then become empty words. In this sense we can say that, whether we can realise the unity and opposition between public ownership and market economy and better integrate advantages of socialist system with strengths of market economy, will to a large extent determine the future and destiny of the socialist market economy.


Originality/value
As previously mentioned, the relationship between plan and market or government and market are part of resource allocation methods or economic operation mechanism. Compatibility and combination, however, with public ownership and market economy are part of an ownership or basic economic system. Science reveals the nature and developmental law of the socialist market economy. An in-depth study must be conducted on the relationship between public ownership and market economy.
