On 13 May 2009 the Budgetary Committee of the Deutsche Bundestag approved the procurement of two air defence weapon systems for the protection in close-in ranges (Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar/C-RAM). The C-RAM air defence system is to ensure the protection of German properties in countries of deployment against rocket, artillery and mortar fires (abbreviated: RAM) as of 2011. By this decision on the procurement of the AD weapon system the course to improving the Army's equipment for current mission is being consistently followed. At the same time, the C-RAM for protection in close-in ranges is a first and important step to close the capability gaps of the Army air defence corps. As part of the Air Defence System the C-RAM was developed with priority in order to be able to meet the present threats in missions and operations. But to be also capable of meeting future threat developments this AD projects will now have to be advanced step by step. The progress in achieving a threat-related air defence capability of the Bundeswehr is to be effected by the basic development of additional elements and components of the AD system as from 2010.
