AbstractTwentieth Century medical education has stressed the basic sciences to the neglect of the humanities. The intent of this commentary is to explore the humanities' role and contribution to the professional formation of the physician. A major change on the United States' medical school admission exam starting in 2015 is a move away from its current focus on natural sciences and begins to incorporate a wider breath of liberal studies and social sciences. The ideal 21st Century physician is a more well rounded person who can interact on a deeper level with patients and not by a narrow spectrum of intellectual interests. The 21st Century curriculum has a unique opportunity to reflect and build upon professional values and attributes informed by the humanities, particularly as the latter relate to the role of the physician in society. It is important to be creative in constructing opportunities for humanities learning experiences and resources within the scope and structure of the curriculum. It is necessary to think in more innovative ways as to the experiential learning environment that targets professional formation, and for a more broadly and humanly educated physician.

AbstractSlow global economic recovery is affecting health and access to care by an ever‐increasing number of individuals globally. International health organizations are advocating increased attention to fighting and preventing non‐communicable disorders and equitable access to health. World Bank estimates that an additional annual contribution of 10 billion USD will be required to improve populations' health and minimize disparities. Global health policy was one of the major issues addressed at the November 2011 Group of 20 Presidential Summit. It is hoped that the Summit will also include recommendations for improving the training of additional health care workers necessary to achieve the Millennium Developmental Goals. Rapidly evolving and low cost information technology should provide a temporary solution to the severe global health care workforce shortages.

AbstractAnti‐microbial drug resistance (AMR or AMDR) is a complex multi‐dimensional and systemic failure in health education, social behavior, health care legislation and/or policies and practices. AMDR is a life threatening infection extending beyond national boundaries. Collaboration among the health care, pharmaceutical, agricultural and consumer communities is a prerequisite to ward off this unraveling human made pandemic. Education of stakeholders, proper hygiene practices, infection prevention and responsible antibiotic "stewardship" are essential strategic elements of remedial and preventive programs.
