AbstractThis article studies China's political and military relations with Algeria, a North African middle power. It tries to do through Role Theory, which has been enriched by incorporating the notion of hedging. The National Role Conception provides a good framework, for it shows that the overlapping roles of Algeria and China have helped consolidate their ties. Both China and Algeria have expectations from one another; the article demonstrates that though each has fulfilled the other's expectations, China has not fully done so regarding the conflict in Western Sahara without however resulting in distrust or tensions between the two. On the contrary, in view of the reconfiguration taking place in the international system, as well as in the immediate environment, the article advances the proposition that Algeria, historically a staunch nonaligned nation, has recently hedged China to defend against mounting threats. Algeria hedges China as 'geopolitical insurance policy'. Furthermore, Algeria participated at the 14th BRICS Summit in June 2022; its eventual membership will consolidate Sino‐Algerian relations and will enable both countries to continue playing their self‐attributed roles.

The collapse of the Muammar Qaddafi regime was ostensibly the prelude to a democratic Libya. The 2012 election elicited much optimism. By 2014, the domestic situation had taken an unexpected turn for the worse, resulting in two governments, one in the east and one in the west, each supported by numerous militias. While the civil war has pitted Libyans against Libyans, foreign interventions on behalf of opposite side in the conflict have hindered the end of the civil war. Indisputably, foreign interference had begun well before the civil war; however, the military backing to the protagonists has become more pronounced since 2014. The foreign powers involved in the Libyan conflict aim to fulfill specific interests, some of which deriving from the rivalries between those countries. Unless those foreign powers have achieved their goals in Libya, an end to the civil war anytime soon remains unlikely, occasional ceasefires notwithstanding.

Cet article explore la manière dont se sont construites et ont évolué les relations entre la Chine et trois pays du Maghreb (Maroc, Algérie et Tunisie). Il montre la place prépondérante qu'occupe l'Algérie dans les relations entre la Chine et Maghreb, hier comme aujourd'hui. Il interroge les fondements de ces relations aux intérêts multiples et les met en perspective en décrivant notamment le passage d'une solidarité aux fondements idéologiques à des relations économiques aux fondements plus pragmatiques. Inscrivant, sa présence dans sa stratégie globale, notamment via les forums sino-arabes et sino-africains et de la nouvelle route de la soie, la Chine privilégie l'échelle bilatérale dans ses relations avec les pays du Maghreb.
