The transformation in warfare that is going on before our eyes has so far only managed to eliminate its now obsolete aspect of policing confrontation between states. Yet in doing so its true nature, that of all-out conflict involving every ruse and act of violence of which man is capable, persists in unregulated low-intensity conflict. Warfare has changed, but not man. This is a powerful essay, inspired by the recent republication in French of Marin Van Creveld's 1991 work, The Transformation of War.
