DOROTHEA VON MÜCKE is Professor of German at Columbia University. She is the author of Virtue and the Veil of Illusion: Generic Innovation and the Pedagogical Project in Eighteenth Century Literature(Stanford University Press, 1991), as well as coeditor (with Veronica Kelly)of Body and Text in the Eighteenth Century (Stanford University Press, 1994). Her book Modernity and the Occult: The Rise of the Fantastic Tale is forthcoming from Stanford University Press, and she is coeditor of The New History of German Literature, which will be published by Harvard University Press.
