The author, writer and filmmaker Neil Hollander has been having a successful career for more than three decades. He's been author of several books for kids and more books that serve as a manuals for surviving on open sea. With his latest books Hollander has been advocating for world peace and bringing closer to the public the horrific life of people living under military regime in Burma. He is also active as a public speaker covering these and similar subjects. As a filmmaker Hollander started his career back in 70's when together with Harald Mertes went on a voyage around the Ocean on a sailing boat, Spending three years on this trip he visited many places and learned many things about life on sea. Later he documented these finding in his book, which he also used as a screenplay for his awarded documentary film The Last Sailors: The Final Days of Working Sail. The film is hosted by Orson Welles who in this classic documentary film tells the story of the men who, with their ancient craft, still harness the wind and the sea for their livelihood. The film includes stories from people living all over the world, including countries like Egypt, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Brazil, Costa Rica and other places. Hollander is artist that is best known for his exhibitions hosted in collaboration with some world-recognized museums and art schools. In his career he has worked with the Smithsonian, the Deutsches Museum and the Jim Thompson House in Bangkok. Lately his project are publicly visible at his portfolio at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Projects worth mentioning as one of the best in his portfolio include Hollander's Nobel Voices, Neil Hollander Burma A Human Tragedy, Birds of Passage, H for Hunger, to name a few.

Michael Lewis is a New York Times bestselling author who has written more than a dozen books on subjects ranging from politics to Wall Street. His recently released book, "Fifth Risk," explores mismanagement in federal government. His other books include "The Big Short," "Moneyball" and "The Blind Side" - all of which were made into movies. Another, "Liar's Poker," was based partly on his experience as a bond salesman at Salomon Brothers. Lewis is a sharp observer of politics, finance and the evolution of American culture, combining keen insight with a sharp sense of humor. He is a columnist for Bloomberg News and a contributing writer to Vanity Fair. His articles have also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and Sports Illustrated.

Rohinton Mistry is a well renowned author in the contemporary commonwealth literature and occupies a significant place among the writers of Indian Diaspora. Even though he is settled in Canada; it is his upbringing in Mumbai that reflects in all his writings. The distinct Mumbai culture, particularly the Parsee way of life, the people of the city and even the politics of India are major themes in his novels. Rohinton Mistry as a writer of Diaspora has carved a niche for himself. His works such as: "Tales from Firozsha Baag", "Such A Long Journey", "A Fine Balance" and "Family Matters";mark a new kind of writing, resulting from a fragmented, splintered world. As a Diasporic Parsi writer, very sensitively he has recalled his community's journey through time and history with a sense of loss and nostalgia. His books portray diverse facets of Indian socioeconomic life; as well as Parsi Zoroastrian life, customs, and religion. Many of his writings are markedly "Indo-nostalgic". Rohinton Mistry through his Diasporic discourse has well depicted his ancestral background, his community's engaged situation in a metropolis like Bombay and his deep attachment with and nostalgia for a world gone by. In this paper an attempt has been made to delineate diasporic discourse in the works of Rohinton Mistry. Although he is obsessed with the colonial and postcolonial experiences in India, we can find some traces of Canada in his literature. His characters dream of being integrated into, and accepted by, Canadian society on the one hand and on the other hand, these same characters are torn by an insatiable desire to be true to their native culture; to honor and cherish their own, distinct cultural identity.

The G20 has produced mixed results. After initial high hopes and some success, negotiations within the G20 forum have slowed, progress is less visible and disagreement rather than agreement has come to the fore. Against this background, this paper revisits the basic economic and geopolitical motivations for the G20, in order to review its performance and attempt to draw lessons for the path ahead. We conclude that: (1) in today's global economy (with its trade and financial market integration and its institutional architecture) a 'G20-type' institution is necessary - if it didn't exist, it should be created; (2) the G20 had its high noon moment in 2008-09 and some recalibration of expectations was inevitable, but its achievements in 2010-11 have nevertheless been disappointing; (3) to be fair there is, in detailed and technical work, more progress than there seems to be at first sight; (4) from a governance standpoint, the G20 is not an efficient forum; improvements in working methods are urgently needed; (5) more fundamentally, for the G20 to retain its role, its members need to develop a common vision of global economic problems and the way to approach them.

Electronic government and electronic participation continue to transform the public sector and society worldwide and are constantly being transformed themselves by emerging information and communication technologies. This book presents papers from the 14th International Federation for Information Processing's EGOV conference (IFIP EGOV 2015), and its sister conference, the 7th Electronic Participation (ePart) conference, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 30 August to 2 September 2015, with the support and sponsorship of the University of Macedonia. Through the years, both of these conferences have established themselves as leading scientific events in their field, providing a forum for scholars to present and discuss their work. Included here are 31 accepted ongoing research papers, grouped under the following headings: eParticipation; policy modeling; open government and smart cities; general e-government; and e-government services; as well as 6 Ph.D. colloquium papers, 5 accepted posters and 3 workshops. A standard feature of the contemporary internet landscape is the ability for people to comment on published content and to interact with other individuals, discussing the issues at hand and engaging with each other in debate. In this thesis, I describe a method for the automatic detection of author stances in online forums with respect to discussions on divisive, polarizing social issues, such as gun control and marriage equality {--} a task which is often unproblematic for human readers of the discourse. The research investigates the linguistic and rhetorical devices used by discussion participants to express their topic stance in the context of multi-party, multi-threaded discourse. Along the way, I address necessary sub-tasks in the author stance detection problem, such as the classification of the topic stance of an individual contribution to the discourse, and the assessment of the level of agreement or disagreement between adjacent posts {--} which is crucial, given the highly interactive nature of this genre. I also identify features that provide evidence of an author's topic stance from the very structure of the discourse, without any information at all from the text of the comments posted. The final model is a collective classifier that is able to synthesize all of the stance indicators provided by these different sources, deal with the inconsistencies in this information that may arise, and arrive at a single prediction of the topic stance for every participant in the discussion. The model has many applications in industry and public life, including more tailored newsfeeds, social network suggestions, and use in political fundraising or advocacy campaigns.

It has long defined settler countries, such as Canada; it is affecting communities of departure and return, ranging from the Azores to Zimbabwe; and it is increasingly impacting countries that have traditionally not considered themselves as major immigrant destinations, like many European countries. This contribution presents an innovative and integrated framework for real-time-process reconciliation and optimization (RTRO) in large continuous open pit coal mines. RTRO-Coal is currently developed, validated, tested and implemented as part of a multi-national multi-partner European Union funded R&D project. The key concept is to promote a shift in paradigm from intermittent discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring and quality management system in large scale coal mining operations. The framework is based on a real-time feedback control loop linking online data acquired during extraction rapidly with a sequentially up-datable resource model. The up-to-date model is integrated with a real-time optimization of short-term sequencing and production control decisions. Improved decisions are expected to lead to increased resource-and process efficiency and support a sustainable extraction of natural resources. Most practitioners of critical librarianship agree that subject description is both valuable and political. Subject headings can either reinforce or subvert hierarchies of social domination. Outside the library profession, however, even among stakeholders such as authors, there is little awareness that librarians think or care about the politics of subject description. Talking about subject description with the authors whose works we hold and represent can strengthen our relationships, demystify our work, and hold us accountable for our practices. This paper discusses an interview I conducted with author Eli Clare about the Library of Congress Subject Headings assigned to his book, Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation. Clare describes feeling dismayed by and detached from the subject headings assigned to his book. He offers a sophisticated analysis of individual headings. He also reflects on the subject description project itself, using theories from genderqueer and transgender activism to discuss the limitations of categorization.

This Article provides the first legal biography of lawyer and Senator Lyman Trumbull, one of the most important lawyers and politicians of the nineteenth century. Early in his career, as the leading anti-slavery lawyer in Illinois in the 1830s, he won the cases constricting and then abolishing slavery in that state; six decades later, Trumbull represented imprisoned labor leader Eugene Debs in the Supreme Court, and wrote the Populist Party platform. In between, Trumbull helped found the Republican Party, and served three U.S. Senate terms, chairing the judiciary committee. One of the greatest leaders of America's "Second Founding," Trumbull wrote the Thirteenth Amendment, the Civil Rights Act, and the Freedmen's Bureau Act. The latter two were expressly intended to protect the Second Amendment rights of former slaves. Another Trumbull law, the Second Confiscation Act, was the first federal statute to providing for arming freedmen. After leaving the Senate, Trumbull continued his fight for arms rights for workingmen, bringing Presser v. Illinois to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1886, and Dunne v. Illinois to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1879. His 1894 Populist Party platform was a fiery affirmation of Second Amendment principles. In the decades following the end of President James Madison's Administration in 1817, no American lawyer or legislator did as much as Trumbull in defense of Second Amendment. Yet Lyman Trumbull had little personal interest in firearms, and never considered the Second Amendment to be one of his major issues. So how did Lyman Trumbull become the leading Second Amendment lawyer of the time? His lifelong cause was "the poor who toil for a living in this world." When Trumbull examined America in the nineteenth century, he saw that the rights of the toilers could always be trampled, unless they had the right to arms, individually and collectively. The story of Lyman Trumbull's career begins in the Age of Jackson and ends with Trumbull's protégé, William Jennings Bryan, winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 1896. It is a story of a man who changed political parties five times, while holding fast to his fundamental principle of free labor. Even today, "The Grand Old Man of America" continues to shape our understanding of constitutional liberty.

The Netherlands has a tradition in public spatial planning and design. In the past 20 years, we have seen an increasing role for the market in this field, and more recently, growing attention for sustainability. Sustainability has become an economic factor. Not only at the building level, but also on the level of large-scale area development projects. More and more local governments have high ambitions for sustainable development. Increasingly, during project development, buildings are developed on a sustainable basis. Most of the time, the focus in this approach is on energy. However, sustainability also comprises social aspects. Energy measures have a direct relation to an economic factor such as investment costs, and payback time can be calculated. The economic aspects of social sustainability are more complex. Therefore, for all sustainability development projects, especially in large-scale projects planned over a longer period, it is necessary to make presumptions, which are less reliable as the planning period is extended. For future larger-scale developments, experience in the Netherlands points to two design approaches: 'backcasting', or using a growth model (or a combination of these two). The power of design is the ability to imagine possible scenarios for the future. The layer approach helps to integrate sustainability into public spatial planning. And more specifically, Urban Design Management (UDM) supports an integrative and collaborative approach also on the operational level of a project in which public and market partners work together. This article outlines how design, based on these approaches, can contribute to sustainable development based on the 'new playing field', where spatial problems should be solved in networks. In der deutschen Rechtswissenschaft scheint bereits die Idee von Open Access (OA) einen schweren Stand zu haben: Eine Reihe von Wissenschaftler:innen üben offen Kritik an der Idee oder bezweifeln sogar die Verfassungsmäßigkeit von Open-Access-Vorgaben oder -Richtlinien. Nichtsdestotrotz sind in den letzten Jahren innovative digitale Formate entstanden, die hochwertige rechtswissenschaftliche Inhalte OA veröffentlichen. Nennenswerte Beispiele sind der Verfassungsblog und der Völkerrechtsblog. Diese Plattformen nennen sich "Blogs", stellen als qualitätsgesicherte Multi-Author-Blogs (QMABs) aber tatsächlich eine neue, innovative, frei verfügbare und genuin digitale Form des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens dar, die zwischen wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften und traditionellen Medien/Presse angesiedelt ist. In einem QMAB können Expert:innen (in der Regel Wissenschaftler:innen) tagesaktuell Ereignisse analysieren, einordnen und kommentieren. QMABs in der Rechtswissenschaft und den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften haben als innovatives Publikationsformat in den vergangenen Jahren eine wachsende Zahl an Autor:innen und Leser:innen hinzugewonnen. Auch die breite Öffentlichkeit nimmt zunehmend Notiz von diesen Plattformen. Gesellschaftspolitische Entwicklungen und Ereignisse sind häufig mit rechtlichen und rechtspolitischen Fragestellungen verknüpft, auf die auch Nicht-Wissenschaftler:innen Antworten suchen. Gleichzeitig haben Wissenschaftler:innen ein Interesse daran, ihre Expertise in den politischen Raum zu tragen. QMAB dienen somit nicht nur dem wissenschaftlichen Binnendiskurs, sondern ermöglichen es auch der breiten Öffentlichkeit, an Fachdiskursen teilzunehmen, etwa über die Kommentarfunktion – und all dies über staatliche Grenzen hinweg. Damit fördern QMABs nicht nur den wissenschaftlichen Austausch und öffnen Diskurse für ein breites Publikum, sondern internationalisieren diese auch.
