Ion Vianu (b.1934, Bucarest), Romanian psychiatrist and writer, son of a famous professor of comparative literature (Tudor Vianu), becomes recognized also for his positions against the communist authorities' attempt of using psychiatry as a political weapon. In 1977 he chooses the path of exile, continuing his psychiatric research and practice in the Western world (Switzerland). Starting from the assumption that our scholar represents a paradigmatic example of what may be called an "in-between" identity, this paper intends to analyse the image(s) that the narrator gives of himself through a discourse which continuously tries to harmonize memory and forgetfulness, testimony and evidence, authenticity and rhetorical devices.

This paper explores the idea of métissage - a kind of intertextuality - as it has been theorized by Françoise Lionnet (1989) through a close reading of Le Cow-boy (1983), an autobiographical novel by Djanet Lachmet about the Algerian Revolution (1954 - 1962). Lionnet (1989) describes métissage as a textual weaving of traditions in order to reintroduce oral Creole customs and to re-evaluate receives Western concepts. The term carefully links issues of race, politics, reading and writing. Described as a "life-story", Lachmet's Le Cow-boy is the story of Lallia, a young girl growing up during the Algerian liberation struggle of the 1950s and 60s. Providing both a critique of métissage and study of its possible manifestation in the novel, I ask wether life-writing is - in this case - a kind of stratagem that opens up ambiguous spaces of possibility where a subject of violent history and an agent of discourse might engage with one another; where new models of interaction between the personal and the political might be meaningfully explored. ; Este ensayo explora el concepto del métissage -una clase de intertextualidad- tal y como ha sido teorizada por Françoise Lionnet (1989) a través de una lectura en profundidad de El Cow-boy (1983), una novela autobiográfica de Djanet Lachmet sobre la Revolución argelina (1954-1962). 2007-2008 ; Lorsque j'ai découvert Annie Ernaux pour la première fois, je cherchais un sujet pour ma thèse de Doctorat depuis quelque temps déjà, sans en trouver un qui puisse vraiment me convaincre par sa richesse et son originalité. C'est au cours d'un séminaire sur les journaux intimes et les autobiographies que j'ai remarqué les œuvres d'Ernaux, simples et denses à la fois et surtout peu connues au Liban. Mon choix s'est donc porté sur elle, en particulier sur ses récits autobiographiques, La Place, Une femme, Passion simple, L'Occupation et L'Événement qui retracent successivement ses relations avec son père, sa mère, celles entretenues avec ses amants jusqu'à la rupture de leur liaison et même au-delà, enfin le vécu de son avortement clandestin en 1963, le tout dans un contexte social, politique, culturel et religieux largement décrit. La problématique majeure chez Annie Ernaux concerne l'exil intérieur dont elle souffre terriblement depuis longtemps. Tiraillée entre son monde familial originel et le milieu bourgeois auquel elle a accédé par ses études et son mariage, elle a du mal à définir son identité. Elle tente alors par le biais d'une écriture - qui se voudrait « thérapeutique » - de se réconcilier avec elle-même et de retrouver l'unité de sa personne. Au bout du compte, elle réussit à surmonter sa culpabilité et à se racheter en élevant ses parents au rang de héros littéraires dignes d'être la matière même de ses livres. Ernaux libère également les refoulés et les tabous sexuels de son enfance pour s'affirmer en femme « follement » passionnée et jalouse. Enfin, elle « crie » la douleur de sa chair vécue lors de son avortement clandestin, accusant la société masculine et appelant au changement des mentalités. Bref, la douleur qui se dégage des œuvres se transforme petit à petit en une force imposante qui d'une part dénonce les non-dits et les interdits, et encourage d'autre part à affirmer fièrement ses origines, ses choix, sa passion, sa jalousie,. en somme, une belle leçon de confiance en soi et de révolution intime. Pour analyser ce parcours scripturaire, je confère à mon travail une forme triptyque. Formelle, la première partie analyse le genre des œuvres d'Ernaux à la fois autobiographiques et autofictives selon les terminologies de Philippe Lejeune et de Philippe Hamon. La deuxième partie, elle, est surtout psychanalytique; elle se base sur les théories de Sigmund Freud et de René Girard concernant le triangle œdipien et le désir mimétique dans les relations familiales et amoureuses. Enfin, la troisième partie présente trois approches différentes : la première, sociologique, en référence à divers travaux de sociologues dont Pierre Bourdieu sur les inégalités sociales; la deuxième, stylistique, d'après « l'écriture blanche » analysée initialement par Roland Barthes; enfin, la troisième portant sur la réception des œuvres d'Annie Ernaux par les internautes d'après les théories d'Umberto Eco et d'autres critiques en la matière. Une étude d'une telle dimension nécessite certes beaucoup de travail souvent entravé par de multiples difficultés. Annie Ernaux étant contemporaine, les références bibliographiques directement liées à mon corpus sont extrêmement rares, voire inexistantes au Liban. Ainsi, j'ai dû défricher un terrain quasiment intact. Pour combler ce manque, j'ai fait des recherches dans diverses bibliothèques et centres de recherche universitaire à Paris (Université de La Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III; Bibliothèque Nationale de France – Site François Mitterand; Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou) puis à Montréal (Université de Montréal, Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec), j'ai également commandé par la suite plusieurs livres de France. Certaines difficultés se rapportent en outre aux multiples théories et approches employées dans ma thèse et souvent méconnues parce qu'absentes du programme d'étude durant mes années de Licence et de Master. Lire seule les ouvrages de méthodes critiques n'a pas toujours été facile, certaines théories étant assez ardues, d'autres relativement récentes et peu utilisées encore. Sur un tout autre niveau, mon émigration au Canada en pleine guerre de juillet 2006 constitue elle aussi une difficulté majeure. Une rupture de plusieurs mois s'est opérée dans mon travail doctoral vu les circonstances du voyage et le dépaysement social soudain. L'acculturation s'est faite ensuite progressivement et j'ai repris mes études lentement mais sûrement jusqu'à la fin de la rédaction. En fait, ma thèse de Doctorat est la première au Liban qui porte sur Annie Ernaux. Les œuvres autobiographiques de l'auteur y sont analysées à plus d'un niveau : formel, psychanalytique, sociologique, stylistique, etc. Les documents iconographiques étudiés (couvertures des œuvres du corpus et d'autres) agrémentent le travail et illustrent les propos avancés. La réception des œuvres par les internautes est, quant à elle, élaborée pour la première fois au Liban dans le cadre d'une thèse; elle permet d'ancrer la recherche dans la modernité (voire postmodernité), époque à laquelle la littérature est devenue inséparable de l'univers électronique. Cette association permet également une diffusion et une connaissance plus larges, voire surtout plus rapides, d'Annie Ernaux et de ses œuvres, elle qui proclame toujours que ses expériences intimes et privées constituent en réalité une passerelle vers des phénomènes généraux et collectifs. C'est pourquoi elle qualifie son œuvre d' « autosociobiographique », néologisme qu'elle a forgé pour définir ses divers champs d'écriture. Au fil des ans, Annie Ernaux s'est forgé une place majeure dans la littérature contemporaine, recevant même le prix Renaudot en 1984 pour La Place. Traduites dans plusieurs langues à travers le monde, ses œuvres font désormais partie des programmes scolaires et universitaires et l'une d'elles, Passion simple, a même été adaptée à l'écran sous l'intitulé L'Autre réalisé par Patrick Mario Bernard et Pierre Trividic en 2008, avec Dominique Blanc dans le rôle de l'héroïne. Ernaux a publié en février 2008 Les Années qualifiée d' « autobiographie impersonnelle » par les critiques et constituant une nouvelle piste de recherche. En fait, quelque soit l'œuvre, Annie Ernaux dérange, fascine, agace, bouleverse, et surtout incite à la réflexion, prélude des changements et des révolutions.

The article analyses the representations of Fez and Tanger in the fiction by Tahar Ben Jelloun. It proves that the contrast between these two cities, presented in his many works, illustrates antagonisms in the Moroccan society after 1956. The autobiographical thread of the way from Fez (the city of Norm) to Tanger (the city of Transgression), which emerges in such works as Harrouda (1973), L'Écrivain public (1983), Jour de silence à Tanger (1990), La Nuit de l'Erreur (1997), Sur ma Mère (2008), includes the issue of the writer's political engagement and his objection to anachronistic social and moral norms. Tahar Ben Jelloun's fiction, which is concentrated on the antinomy Fez — Tanger, becomes the area of difficult experience of freedom based on the symbolic breaking off with the father who symbolises restrictive tradition.

We can identify a long autobiographical practice in Africa, if we go back to the Confessions of St. Augustine, and selfwriting has moreover developed in African languages, in pre-colonial and colonial times. At the initiative of anthropologists and Africanists, the first African autobiographies (often written by teachers or students) were collected, while autobiographical writing simultaneously emerged in the French African novel. With the anti-colonial struggle, memoirs were written by leading African politicians, which emphasized the reflexive dimension of African selfwritings. In the postcolonial era, autobiography tends to become more intellectual, oscillating between autobiographical and self-analytic projects. Through a predominantly french-and english speaking corpus, consisting of authors as diverse as Wole Soyinka, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Joseph Emmanuel Nana Appiah, William E. B. Du Bois, Léopold-Sédar Senghor, Lamine Gueye, Amadou Hampâté Bâ, Valentin Yves Mudimbe, Achille Mbembe, Célestin Monga, Barack Obama, Paulin Hountondji or Rasna Warah, our dissertation traces back the mutations of African selfwriting, from the colonial times to the post-colonial era, emphasizing the dialogues established between African authors and French Africanist thinkers, for whom autobiography was much more than a life story. In these literary historical and sociological perspectives, we borrow from Jerome Meizoz his notion of "posture" to study the esthetical, political and literary positions, of various writers and thinkers in African and Western literary fields. We also highlight how self-reflexivity occurs by confronting African self writings to some intellectual autobiographies produced by African-American thinkers and writers. This comparison allows a reflection on the "postcolonial posture" of our authors, and leads to a new problem : the post-racial project that runs through the racialist interpretations of history and identity that characterized many African ideologies such as Pan-Africanism and negritude. ...

Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyse the assessment procedures of approximately forty autobiographical texts in seven different linguistic domains : German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Polish. The objective is to find out for what sort of users they are designed, and with what intentions, to define how the texts are described, classified and indexed, and within what generic and temporal limits. It will also try to find out whether the texts in question are published or unpublished material, before ending with a more developed table of the situation in France, followed by a detailed appraisal of the analysed assessments.

In an attempt to better apprehend paternal behaviour amongst the common people, the author examines the autobiographical diary kept by a Parisian glazier, Jacques-Louis Ménétra, from 1764 to 1802 : how was he treated by his father, how did he himself treat his own children ? Three conclusions can be reached from this one lot of evidence : it was commonly required for a father to love his children ; he could and had to love them without making any differences between them ; and he could and had to take care of setting them in life. In this case, both norms and actual behaviour coincided.
