While the borrowing by the third world countries and many newly industrializing countries is a topical issue of concern because of the inability of the borrowers to discharge their obligations in time. India is one country which may well be regarded as an exceptional borrower. India as a sound debtor has made use of foreign credit extremely sagaciously. Debt-service ratios of India and some other third world countries are compared. India's policy in respect of self-reliance has made it possible for her to become a sound debtor. (DÜI-Sen)
