In a reply to Mark Lichbach's & Eric Selbin's critiques (1997 [see abstracts 9709958 & 9709972]) of an article by Doug McAdam, Sidney Tarrow, & Tilly (1996 [see abstract 9707164]) proposing a continuum of types of behavior constituting contentious politics, it is explained that the original article rejects subsumption under covering laws as an explanatory model, advocating instead the search for general causal mechanisms that interact differently from setting to setting. The purpose & utility of the theory advanced in the original article is elaborated. It is argued that the theory advocated by Lichbach, the collective action research project, is inadequate for the study of contentious politics, & Selbin's belief that the theory presented in the original article denies the distinctive character of social revolutionary processes is unfounded.
