During the last decade, political biographies have resurfaced in the context of Spanish historiography, often adding value to historical knowledge and gaining the favour of the public. This text goes through several 19th century political biographies recently published, showing that, together with the richness and opportunity of the sources used, a good biography entails the author being able to combine both empathy and distance, as well as enough critical will to remove the distortions that ideological pressure and political passion could have poured over the character. ; Hace tiempo que el género biográfico recuperó visibilidad en la historiografía española, a menudo con gran éxito de público y provecho del conocimiento histórico. En este texto se realiza un recorrido por biografías políticas sobre protagonistas del siglo xix español publicadas durante la última década, para concluir que, junto con la riqueza y oportunidad de las fuentes y su calidad representativa, una biografía lograda parece el fruto de la capacidad de su autor para combinar empatía y distanciamiento, junto con la iniciativa crítica suficiente para remover los tópicos y las distorsiones que la presión ideológica y la pasión política hayan acumulado sobre el personaje.

This article discusses some of the new directions taken by cultural history nowadays, with particular focus on the works by scholars using a global perspective. It argues that this choice of a global perspective raises several problems, especially the apparent contradictions between the traditional micro-approaches, typical of cultural history, and the macro ones often used in economic or political analyses. The question is how to deal with individuals from a global perspective. Based on reflections by Peter Burke and Natalie Zemon Davis, among others, the essay shows that this concern is an important issue today, in an increasingly interconnected era, and that it responds to our cultural and intellectual needs, enriching and relativizing our perspectives. Moreover, the text also considers that global history is an emerging field that can be practiced in several ways that include micro- perspectives, as in the so called global biographies or the global microhistory. In fact, these studies present examples of intense cultural encounters in the past, focusing on the different types of individual intermediaries that made it possible, experimenting with stories of individual lives in global contexts, connecting communities and the outside world, juxtaposing micro and macro perspectives. In other words, the life of a single individual may serve to understand the connections across cultures and groups from the perspective of the actors involved. ; Este artículo aborda algunas de las nuevas direcciones de la historia cultural. En particular, los trabajos de algunos estudiosos que emplean una perspectiva global. Esa elección plantea algunos problemas, sobre todo los relativos a las aparentes contradicciones entre la tradicional mirada micro, que ha sido característica de la historia cultural más significativa, y la macro, en la que acostumbraba a primar el análisis económico o político. ¿Cómo analizar un individuo desde una perspectiva global? Utilizando principalmente las reflexiones de Peter Burke o Natalie Zemon Davis, el artículo expone que esa preocupación es un asunto actual, propio de una época de interconexión acelerada, que responde a nuestras necesidades culturales e intelectuales, permitiendo enriquecer y relativizar nuestras perspectivas. Asimismo, muestra que se trata de un campo emergente que se puede trabajar de distintos modos, incluso desde una perspectiva micro, con las llamadas biografías globales o la microhistoria global. Esos estudios, en realidad, ofrecen ejemplos de intensos encuentros culturales en el pasado, centrándose en los diferentes tipos de intermediarios individuales que los hicieron posibles, experimentando con vidas individuales en contextos globales, conectando las comunidades y el mundo exterior, yuxtaponiendo las perspectivas macro y micro.

This is a study of the meaning and uses of the term jāh in the biographies of certain Andalusi ʻulamā'. Classical Arab lexicography describes jāh as "rank, station, or dignity, with, or in the estimation of, the sulṭān", but texts extracted from biographical literature show that jāh is also linked to the possession of wealth, noble genealogical descent (though this is not always a necessary requisite), and above all, the existence of a system of distribution and circulation of favours, both material and symbolic, between possessors of jāh and persons close to them. A significant tradition is identified, through which the term jāh gradually acquires a religious character, since it was considered by some to be subject to the payment of zakāt. Examples of the "misuse" of jāh by Andalusi ʻulamā' are also provided. In conclusion, it is proposed on the basis of numerous examples that the concept of jāh belonged to a secular semantic field, and that its use in the biographies of ʻulamā' reveals the growing involvement of such scholars in the sphere of political and economic power. ; En las biografías de cierto número de ulemas andalusíes aparece el término ŷāh, al cual se dedica este estudio. Los lexicógrafos árabes lo definen como «rango y posición ante el poder», pero el examen de los textos biográficos aquí reunidos muestra que, junto a ello, el ŷāh se define por la posesión de riquezas, la nobleza genealógica (un requisito no siempre presente) y, muy en especial, la existencia de un sistema de distribución y circulación de favores, materiales y simbólicos, entre los poseedores de ŷāh y las personas de su entorno. En este sentido, se identifica una tradición que trata de dotar al ŷāh de un carácter religioso, al considerarlo sometido al mismo azaque que los bienes materiales. Se ofrecen asimismo ejemplos del «mal uso» del ŷāh entre los ulemas andalusíes. Como conclusión, se propone que el concepto de ŷāh pertenece a un repertorio semántico secular, aplicado a los ulemas cuando éstos se incorporan al aparato del poder político y económico, de lo cual se ofrecen numerosos ejemplos.

The life and administration of the president Manuel González Flores has been barely addressed in the Mexican historiography; his four years of government have been included as part of the time called Porfiriato, in which Porfirio Diaz ruled with absolute power. This article describes four biographies of Gonzalez, inspired by his military exploits, his exercise of power and his personal profile. Two of them were written by contemporary journalists: one with the aim of glorifying his acts in front of Mexico and the other seems to discredit him because of the analysis presented here. The other two were written by the greatgrandchildren of the president in an effort to reclaim their image and highlight the reasons why in national history Manuel González is almost unknown or identified as the person who only occupied the presidential chair to execute the will of Diaz. These lines also refer to some research prepared on the gonzalina administration in the electoral field, English debt, banking, colonization and freedom of worship, which relate with the biographies studied here. ; La vida y administración del presidente Manuel González Flores ha sido poco abordada en la historiografía mexicana. Los cuatro años que estuvo al frente del gobierno mexicano se incluyen como parte de la etapa denominada Porfiriato, en la que Porfirio Díaz gobernó de manera absoluta. En este artículo se analizan cuatro biografías de Manuel González, inspiradas en sus hazañas militares, ejercicio del poder y perfil personal. Dos de ellas fueron escritas por periodistas contemporáneos a ese político, una con el objetivo de ensalzar sus actos al frente de México y la otra, aparentemente, para desacreditarlo, pues el análisis que aquí se presenta fija algunos matices al respecto. Las otras dos fueron redactadas por los bisnietos del mandatario, con el afán de reivindicar su imagen y evidenciar los motivos por los que en la historia nacional Manuel González es casi desconocido o señalado como el personaje que ocupó la silla presidencial solo para ejecutar la voluntad de Díaz. The analysis of the sources used, mainly interviews, press releases, and correspondence, complemented by testimonies taken from biographical and autobiographical studies of other actors, seeks to understand two fundamental and dialectically linked commitments in her life: art and politics. The temporal limits of this work do not cover the entire existence of Miria Contreras, stretching from the 1960s to her death in 2002, but are rather inscribed in the chronologies of the Cold War (1947-1991), while at the same time exceeding them, in order to understand the ideological and memorial conflicts existing around our biographed figure. ; Al hacer dialogar aspectos de la microhistoria global y de la historia de las emociones, este artículo pretende sentar las bases teóricas de una "biografía en contexto" de Miria Contreras Bell (1928-2002), secretaria personal y amiga íntima del presidente chileno Salvador Allende (1970-1973). In this article we propose observe the way in which the political cleavages influence the militant biographies; we are concerned to answer if the political context is an element to be considered for the maintenance of the militant commitment and in what form. To carry out these objectives we will analyse the trajectories of two-party militants who began their political participation in the decade of the 2000 , recovering the career perspective proposed by Howard Becker, considering the trajectory as a model of orderly sequences of social behaviour, considering the objective and subjective aspects (the way they (la narrate their own history). ; En este artículo proponemos dar cuenta de la forma en que los clivajes políticos influyen en las biografías militantes; nos preocupa responder si el contexto político constituye un elemento a tomar en cuenta para el mantenimiento del compromiso militante y de qué forma. Para llevar adelante estos objetivos analizaremos las trayectorias de dos militantes partidarios que comenzaron su participación política en la década del 2000, retomando la perspectiva de carrera propuesta por Howard Becker, considerando la trayectoria como un modelo de secuencias ordenadas de comportamiento social, tomando en cuenta los aspectos objetivos y subjetivos forma en que relata su propia historia).

This article examines the literature relating to the organisation of the Republican State and the State in the rebel area during the Spanish Civil War. We identify in both cases the works relating to the organs of the State at the international, national and local levels. Literature concerning official repression in the Republican and rebel areas is included as well. We have also added analyses of the more relevant political events, ideological trends, main political parties and singular political groups in both areas. ; Este artículo examina la bibliografía sobre la organización del Estado republicano y la del Estado en la zona rebelde durante la Guerra Civil española. En ambos casos se indican las obras relacionadas con los órganos del Estado a nivel internacional, nacional y local. This work draws from two political biographies to summarize a moment in the intellectual debate about English Socialism during nineteenth century, to review a period that it goes from the emergence of the first party self-identified as "socialist" in the country, in 1881, to the publication of Fabian Essays, in 1889, when collectivist ideas drive a crucial generational change in the Fabian Society, central to understand the emergence of the Labour Party. We suggest that the English Socialist tradition is not based solely in a position about the coupling between the relations of production and political decision-making, but also in the championship of a number of values that are not exclusive of a particular ideological tradition, but are somehow visible in the intellectual environment of the period. ; El trabajo toma como pretexto dos biografías políticas que sintetizan el debate intelectual sobre el futuro del socialismo inglés durante el siglo xix, para revisar un período que se extiende desde la emergencia del primer partido que se autodenomina a sí mismo «socialista» (1881) hasta la publicación de los Fabian Essays (1889), cuando las ideas colectivistas provocan un cambio generacional en la Sociedad Fabiana que será determinante para comprender la posterior aparición del Partido Laborista. Concluimos que la tradición del socialismo inglés no descansa únicamente en su apuesta por la determinación de las relaciones de producción en las decisiones políticas, sino en la defensa de un conjunto de valores que no son exclusivos de una tradición ideológica, sino que se presentan —al menos en alguna forma o grado— entrelazados y dispersos por el ambiente intelectual de este período.

Biographical Dictionary of Communists and non-Communists related to the Communist International in Latin America, 1918-1943

In this paper I`m trying to find out which kind of people were the Carlist chiefs who took part in the first war. With that intention I`ve selected the 100 most outstanding ones and, after studying their biographies, I`ve prepared some statistics. I have extracted the information from Pirala`s work, from other books abour the First Carlist War and from several biographical works about Carlist leaders. With this investigation I have been able to know that most of the Carlist leaders came from Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarre, were mostly military expelled from active duty or leaders of royalist volunteers and had a quite varied life history. Some of them were idealists, other pragmatists and other opportunists. ; En este artículo he intentado averiguar qué tipo de personas fueron los jefes carlistas que participaron en la primera guerra. Para ello he seleccionado a los 100 más destacados y he elaborado una serie de estadísticas con sus datos biográficos. La información la he extraído de la obra de Pirala, de otros trabajos sobre la Primera Guerra Carlista y de varias obras biográficas sobre jefes carlistas. Con esta investigación he podido saber que la mayoría de los jefes carlistas procedían de Cataluña, el País Vasco y Navarra, que eran en su mayoría militares apartados del servicio o jefes de voluntarios realistas y que tuvieron una trayectoria vital bastante variada, habiendo entre ellos idealistas, pragmáticos y oportunistas.
