"From 2007-2013 the European 7th Framework Program Science in Society (FP7) funded a multitude of formal and informal educational institutions to join forces and engage in alternative ways to teach science—inside and outside the classroom—all over Europe. This book reports on one of these projects named INQUIRE which was developed and implemented to support 14 Botanic Gardens and Natural History Museums in 11 European countries, to establish a collaborative learning network and expand their understanding of inquiry based science teaching (IBST). Suzanne Kapelari provides insight into the complex theoretical background and practical considerations that informed the project design and which guided the consortium through a three-year process of collaborative knowledge creation. 'Expansive Learning Theory' is fundamental to this approach and places emphasis on communities as learners, on transformation and creation of culture, on horizontal movement and hybridization of knowledge, and on the formation of theoretical concepts.
This book is to be considered for planning and running international science education projects as well as a multifaceted theoretical underpinning of teaching. It serves as a conceptual and practical resource for formal and informal science educators and project managers.

Bogor Botanic Gardens (BBG) was established in 1817 and is the oldest botanic garden in South East Asia. The garden has long been a centre for scientific research and has been the founding institution of a number of other research centres in Indonesia, particularly in the life sciences. The garden initially covered 47 ha but has expanded over the years and is now 87 ha. It has evolved over its 200-year history from a collection of economically valuable plants to the multi-faceted institute it is today, undertaking activities in plant conservation, research, education, ecotourism and environmental services. In recent years, it has strengthened its role in plant conservation through the establishment of 32 new botanic gardens across Indonesia. These new gardens are managed by local government and universities and supervised by BBG. In its bicentenary year, 2017, BBG organised a number of activities, programmes and celebrations and these are highlighted in thisarticle.

We argue that botanic gardens, as plant conservation focused institutions, have been tested in temperate regions that possess a relatively robust conservation infrastructure and a relatively low number of threatened species. The ability of the Brazilian botanic gardens to support plant conservation is especially challenging, given their small number relative to Brazil's plant diversity and the increasing rate of habitat loss and plant endangerment. This study, the first for Brazil, assesses the conservation capacity of Brazilian botanic gardens. An assessment is made of the status of conservation facilities in Brazilian botanic gardens and the conservation status of their plant collections.This was based on a survey sent to thirty-six Brazilian botanic gardens in 2011– 2013 using information from the 2008 Brazilian Red List, and seven state conservation lists. The results identified a small percentage of threatened species (n =102/21 per cent) in ex situ collections of 22 botanic gardens and less than 10 per cent representation for each state red list. An assessment based on the updated Brazilian Red List (2014) showed that 425 threatened species were maintained in living collections of 18 botanic gardens. Despite the extensive size of some collections, the proportion of threatened species in the collections was found to be very low. Improvement in infrastructure, technical capacity, including horticultural skills, and development of policies and protocols will benecessary to increase the effectiveness of the collections for conservation aims.

Gullele Botanic Garden (GBG) was founded through a joint venture between Addis Ababa University and Addis Ababa City Government. Since its establishment in 2010, it has developed its infrastructure and carried out a range of activities related to plant conservation, research, environmental education and ecotourism in line with its vision and mission. Key activities described in this paper are the five different uses of GBG land; the installation of a weather station; and the construction of a mini-greenhouse for plant acclimatisation, the multipurpose Agora II (an eco-friendly building with a green roof), a thematic garden and a nursery. The lists of endemic plants (65), large mammals (11) and endemic bird species recorded are presented in Appendices I, II and III respectively. The main activities and works carried out by GBG are not yet widely known to local and international communities. Through describing the garden's current status, challenges and opportunities, this paper aims to increase awareness among the scientific community and more widely of GBG's activities and intentions for protecting Ethiopia's flora.

Parliament house is located on the corner of George and Alice Streets, Brisbane City and is situated next to the City Botanical Gardens and Queensland University of Technology. It is the meeting place of the Parliament of Queensland, housing one chamber, the Legislative Assembly.

On behalf of the European Botanic Gardens Consortium (EBGC), the University of Lisbon and Jardim Botânico da Ajuda (Botanic Garden of Ajuda) on the occasion of its 250th anniversary organized the 8th European Congress of Botanic Gardens – EuroGard VIII, that was held in Lisbon, 7th-11th may 2018. Under the theme "Botanic Gardens, People and Plants for a Sustainable World", it was intended to address many of the issues to which Botanic Gardens are contributing, in particular raising public awareness of environmental conservation challenges that our planet faces. EuroGard VIII bring together the participation of Botanic Gardens in Europe and other world regions. Moreover, the 15th Symposium of the Ibero- Macaronesian Association of Botanic Gardens took place at the same time, during which the aim was to assess the work carried out to meet the Aïchi Biodiversity Targets adopted by the Iberian-Macaronesian botanic gardens for 2020. The Congress included a diverse range of subjects and topics on biodiversity conservation, especially related to plants and the complex and extensive roles of botanic gardens. It emphasized how Botanic Gardens have been actively involved in shaping national and international policies and practices in plant conservation. They continue to have an influential role at all levels through their engagement with governments (that are Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity), and through their involvement in the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation (GPPC). It is acknowledged that botanic gardens come from very different roots but since 2002, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), and its update in 2010, has provided a focus and primary framework to guide Botanic Gardens' activities in strategic and practical contributions to plant conservation; The roles of Botanic Gardens in supporting the GSPC are manifold, from contributions of smaller gardens to single targets to potential contributions to all 16 targets by larger, better resourced, botanic gardens ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
