In the aftermath of a wave of international anti-American sentiments, Bush administration officials have proposed a media relations campaign that will improve the image of the Untied States abroad, especially in the Arab & Muslim worlds. However, while such a tactic worked relatively well during the Cold War to improve the way in which the United States was perceived in other nations, it may well be that such an attempt today will backfire. If Arabs & Muslims see themselves as the subjects of a propaganda campaign they may end up feeling more anti-American sentiment, not less. Adapted from the source document.

Mr. Tancredo Neves, the candidate of the Démocratie Alliance, representing ail the groups opposed to the military regime, was elected president of Brazil by the electoral college which met in Brasilia on 15 January 1985. His overwhelming victory occurred after one of the rnost eventful campaigns the country had ever experienced. An intense popular mobilization against the rules of succession imposed by the Constitution and for universal and direct suffrage characterized the beginning of the campaign more than a year ago, which ended on an almost unanimous consensus, not only for the application of the existing constitutional rules, but also for the opposition candidate accepted as the candidate of national reconciliation. The article relates the main stages of this presidential campaign and the high moments of the return to democracy. It recalls the initial difficulty of the choices among the possible electoral scenarios, with the political forces that were behind them, the procedures which they demanded and the obstacles thev met. It shows how the redeployment of the political forces supporting Mr. Tancredo Neves worked after the party conventions and how he was able to win the benevolent neutrality of president Figueiredo and the Armed Forces.

Environmental action systems in the British and German contexts of the 1980s were characterised both by the lobbying of environmentalists to force industrialists by regulation and by major opinion campaigns leading to electoral pressure. Environmentalists are a new front of opposition to industry, but they do not compete face-to-face. The confrontation takes place through conflicting pressure games on the public authorities. But opinion campaigns, lobbying and political decisions can only be given content by reference to the message of scientists. In the public debates that have emerged, scientists have played the role of leading opinion guides. The development of environmental policies reinforces the influence of scientists on the political sphere. ; International audience ; Environmental action systems in the British and German contexts of the 1980s were characterised both by the lobbying of environmentalists to force industrialists by regulation and by major opinion campaigns leading to electoral pressure. The «battle of the support committees», or the right on campaign
The "battle of the support committees " for Raymond Barre and Jacques Chirac was an episode of the presidential campaign, thus named by journalists. Elected officials and other personalities chose to support one of the two candidates of the " classic " Right, contrary to their past party attachments or their presumed sympathies. The " battle " sheds light on the Right on campaign and the competitive /cooperative relations between Raymond Barre and Jacques Chirac, each thinking that he would need the other in the second round. Jacques Chirac appeared ex post in a dominant (but not hegemonic) position. Raymond Barre followed his rival's moves rather than preceding them. Jacques Chirac's team demonstrated the existence of clearly identified and legitimate spokes-persons. That of Raymond Barre, on the other hand, showed an escalation of a rhetoric which went in all directions. In addition, the "battle of the support committees " emphasized the interactions between the political professionals and the journalists as well as the determinant role of the latter in the " visibilization " of political actions. All this indicates how much both categories of actors participate in the production of a " legitimate " conception of politics and their common belief in the efficacy of rites and practices to which the voter is presumed to be attentive.
