The Chinese diaspora has been growing since the second half of the nineteenth century. In France, the Chinese immigration from the region of the Wenzhou has intensified since the 1980s. This sub-group of the Chinese diaspora has since rapidly expanded its economic activities. The objective of this thesis is to study the economic, social and spatial organization of Wenzhou migrants in France, manly in the Paris region, and to analyze the economic and social relations that they maintain with China in general and with their region of origin in particular. The central hypothesis of the thesis is that the economic "model of Wenzhou" area, as identified and analyzed by the Chinese scholars, and the development of Chinese entrepreneurship in France are closely linked in particular through "Import"of this model in France. The results of our thesis reveal the existence of an original transnational economy connecting France and China, that was supported by the Wenzhou diaspora and that produced a form of "migratory transfer" in each of the two countries. More broadly, the thesis helps to show how the Chinese diaspora in France contributed to the economic development of China, but also how it benefitted from measures included in China's new policy initiated in the early 2000s to consolidate itself. Ce sous-groupe de la diaspora chinoise a dès lors rapidement développé ses activités économiques. L'objectif cette thèse consiste à étudier l'organisation économique, sociale et spatiale des migrants de Wenzhou en France, principalement dans la région parisienne, et d'analyser les rapports économiques et sociaux que ceux-ci entretiennent avec la Chine en général et avec leur région d'origine en particulier. L'hypothèse centrale de la thèse est que le « Modèle de Wenzhou » en Chine, tel qu'il est identifié et analysé par les universitaires chinois, et le développement de l'entrepreneuriat chinois issu de Wenzhou en France sont étroitement liés. Pour ce faire, nous interrogerons notamment l'idée d'une « importation » de ce modèle en France. Les résultats de cette thèse permettent de révéler l'existence d'une économie transnationale originale, reliant la France et la Chine, qui a été soutenue par la diaspora Wenzhou et a produit une forme de « transfert migratoire » dans chacun des deux pays. Plus largement, la thèse permet de montrer de quelle manière la diaspora chinoise en France a contribué au développement économique de la Chine et comment elle a pu bénéficier de la nouvelle politique de la Chine initiée au début des années 2000 pour se consolider. Economic Organization and Spatial Resources : Elements of the Economy of the Diaspora

One of the goals of this article is the description of the arrangement and relationships between Chinese enterprises. To the categories of ethnic labor market, intra or extra-ethnic markets, exotic commerce, communautary commerce and banal commerce, we propose the notions of export trade enterprise, « upstream » enterprise, enterprise of reproduction of identity. The other goal is to try to analyse how this arrangement is related to the economy of the diaspora.
It would appear that the driving principle which works in this « arrangement » is a principle of autonomy, which on the one hand is linked to the willingness of the community to reproduce itself through entrepreneurship, and, on the other hand leads to the autonomy of the group itself. This choice towards entrepreneurship is linked to the fact that it permits the Chinese community to persevere in its own being. This principle of autonomy seems also to govern the diasporic economy as well as the spatial resources used.

■ ANNE-CHRISTINE TREMON Transnational Links in Diaspora : the French Polynesia Chinese Case Study
The article pleads for the usage of a perspective at the same time historical and denationalized of the migratory phenomenon, and issues three proposals for the study of self-defining phenomena as part of migrations. These proposals will be illustrated from the case of a group of descendants of Chinese immigrants in French Polynesia and from their links to China. The practices of remote identification will be studied across the nature of maintained transnational links, under their triple economic, juridical and consanguinity aspect. We will underline, for each of these aspects, the temporal fractures which drove to a change of identifications.

L'article pose le problème des relations culturelles entre le Fujian et les Chinois d'Insulinde à la fin du XVIIe siècle, à un moment où les contacts entre la Chine et les Mers du Sud se redéployent après une période durant laquelle le commerce privé dans cette zone avait été prohibé et la population côtière contrainte à se replier à l'intérieur des terres. Dans un premier temps est envisagée la vie socioreligieuse des Chinois d'Insulinde. Il apparaît que malgré des pressions politiques diverses, les émigrés avaient plutôt tendance à conserver leurs croyances et à créer sur place, selon le procédé dit de la «division de l'encens et du feu (ou des lampes)», des sanctuaires où honorer des divinités importées de la mère-patrie. Dans un deuxième temps, l'article traite du sentiment de ces Chinois d'Insulinde pour leur pays natal, tel qu'il est reflété par le fait que les plus riches d'entre eux se cotisèrent pour restaurer deux temples dilapidés et firent graver des inscriptions commémoratives dans lesquelles ils s'identifièrent comme une élite de la diaspora; une telle audace fut, semble-t-il, rapidement découragée par les autorités et ne réapparaîtra qu'au cours du XIXe siècle, lorsque la politique à l'égard des émigrés aura changé.

This thesis examines the nature of the processes involved in the construction of Macau's identity, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, and former Portuguese "possession", considered from the perspective of the identification processes of its residents, Macanese, Chinese and Portuguese. It explores the effects that the coexistence of different populations have ascribed to the city's "character", understood as the product of the relationships entailed both between its residents, and with the inhabited space, contemporary and historical. Joining a micro and macro level analysis within a global approach to the city, this work studies the contribution of the global processes of the longue durée (e.g. shared governance), and of the present-day (e.g. gambling's liberalisation, economic boom), which reveal old and new dynamics and strategies, of political, socio-economic, and urban nature, as they relate to the production and the transformation of the city as locality. It thus evaluates their impact on the city's shape and on the residents' identification and lived experience, specially with regard to the reproduction of two local categories, the Eurasians and the Macau Chinese. The research shows that the sociocultural construction of Macau is marked by a number of specificities, shaped through the residents' relationships and perceptions of both Portugal and China, or even the Chinese diaspora and Hong Kong, amidst the production of a particular kind of interethnic relation. ; Cette thèse interroge la nature des processus impliqués dans la construction de l'identité de Macau, Région Administrative Spéciale de la Chine (RAS), et ancienne «possession» portugaise, envisagée sous l'angle des processus d'identification des résidants macanais, chinois, et portugais. Il évalue ainsi leur impact sur la forme de la ville et sur l'identification et l'expérience vécue des résidants, en particulier dans la reproduction de deux catégories locales, les Eurasiens et les Chinois de Macau. Il ressort de cette recherche que la construction socioculturelle de Macau est empreinte de spécificités, façonnées par les perceptions et les relations qu'entretiennent ses résidants avec le Portugal et la Chine, ou encore avec la diaspora chinoise, et avec Hong Kong, et par la production des rapports interethniques particuliers.

Its settlement was effected by two migratory waves: one from 1661 and extending to 1945, the other after the proclamation of the People's Republic of China by Mao Zedong in 1949. The strong increase of the population, sometimes giving rise to the distinction between "native Taiwanese" and "mainlanders" made Taiwan one of the world's most densely populated countries and stimulated strong urbanization. The priority given to education, in the years 1950-1960, favored its remarkable economic growth. After a particularly rapid demographic transition, Taiwan entered the post-transition period in the mid-1980s, with fertility below the generational replacement level.
