Throughout Latin-American (LA) history certain abiding issues of politics have arisen from the position of the Church in society & from the claims & att's of various sectors of Catholicism. An important basis in appraisal of these issues 30 yrs ago was the seeming alliance between the Church & the forces of conservatism. Appraisal today cannot be made in those terms, because such alliances have largely disappeared. The permanent interests of the Church remain, however, & the authority that the Church claims has not changed in nature. LA Catholicism has taken a realistic attitude toward soc change, which in general, it is disposed to regard as not essentially antagonistic to Church interests but as offering new opportunities to influence the development of society. Response to the opportunities will probably continue to be in terms of a diversity the limits of which are established by the authority that the Church continues to claim. AA.
After much work, a new Methodist church was opened in Floriana in 1883. This church served mostly the British population on the island and most importantly soldiers. In fact the popularity of the Methodist religion came into waves, as this depended on the presence of soldiers and sailors on the island. Apart from worship the church served as a socio-cultural centre with many activities being held and organised. With the departure of the British from the islands, church numbers were dwindling and it was in 1975 that the building was evacuated and turned to the local government. ; N/A
