As the means of production & consumer goods multiply, technical civilization gives rise to leisure time, apparently separated from work time. This free time is open to all leisure-time possibilities, & the resultant feverish 'pursuit of happiness' is one of the major soc facts of our time. If the means of happiness are theoretically present, neither societies nor individuals are prepared to make use of them. How is it possible to foster the appearance of soc groups imbued with a vigorous hedonistic mentality, & reinforced by a network of games & festivals, in order to combat the deteriorated use of leisure time? The MM play a sole of decisive importance both in the liquidation of the traditional milieu & in the promotion of new hedonistic forms; but the MM are ambivalent & unfortunately often serve to deceive, degrade, & alienate the public. Is the individual by himself capable of making fruitful use of his leisure? The commercial anarchy of the MM would make it appear that a laissez faire attitude is counter-indicated. On the other hand, totalitarian regimentation of leisure is no less of a menace. A solution may be found in an intense & multi-form development of educ. Technical civilization requires that the Sch prepare the citizen not only for work, but also for leisure. C. Bremond, tr by M. M. Ito.
