Examines Talal Asad's (1991) investigation of the relationship between anthropology & colonialism. Prompted by R. G. Collingwood's (1939) notion of the logic of question & answer, Asad mandated a shift in anthropological preoccupation from the production of studies of European colonial occupation to the production of an anthropology of Western hegemony. Asad's contention that the narrative of colonialism should be comprehended as a narrative of the conditions of resistance is examined through a discussion of the construction of anthropological objects & the transforming effects of modern European authority in non-European locations. It is concluded that a historical anthropology of Western domination would essentially produce a historical anthropology of the postcolonial present. 19 References. Adapted from the source document.

"Ania Loomba examines the key features of the ideologies and history of colonialism, and the relationship of colonial discourse to literature. She goes on to consider the challenges to colonialism, surveying anti-colonial discourses, and recent developments in postcolonial theories and histories. Looking at how sexuality is figured in the texts of colonialism, Colonialism/Postcolonialism shows how contemporary feminist ideas and concepts intersect with those of postcolonialist thought."--Jacket

Many governments throughout history have seized lands in other places in order to rule them from afar. These lands exist mainly to profit the home country, and provide a place where settlers can populate the land without regard to the native inhabitants. The home country exercises control over the colony and drains it of resources. Colonies located in America, India, South Africa, and Vietnam are examined in depth. Carefully chosen documents and images illuminate the long lasting effects of colonial governments on both the home country and the colonized lands.
