New historicism is still one of the most influential forms of contemporary historiography. A commitment to studying the manifestation of the political in cultural phenomena has united researchers of the non-material forms of power, culture and art, literature and linguistics. Therewith, as opponents of new historicism have correctly argued, its followers' works show the political views of the authors, a particular "confession of faith" of contemporary Western left-wing intellectuals, rather than discover the political and power elements of cultural phenomena of the past. Colonialism in early Stuart literature, and especially in Shakespeare's drama, has become one of the most popular subjects of the anticolonial vector of the new historical discourse.Shakespeare's last completed play, "The Tempest", has been the focus of special attention and become a "manifest of colonialism" at the discretion of the authors of the new historical school. Such an approach to the issue of the image of the "other" seems to be too politicized and does not allow to put it in the context of other "others" in the drama of the great Bard and his contemporaries. The article deals with comparison of the discourses of the "other" in "The Tempest" and other writings of Shakespeare as well as with studying these images as part of the Neo-Platonic Renaissance concepts of the Universe. ; Одним из самых влиятельных направлений в современной историографии остается «новый историзм». Стремление к изучению проявлений политического в культурных феноменах объединило исследователей нематериальных форм власти, культуры и искусства, литературы и лингвистики. При этом, как справедливо отмечали критики, зачастую работы этих историков не столько раскрывают властную и политическую составляющую культурных феноменов прошлого, сколько свидетельствуют о политических взглядах, своеобразном «символе веры» современного западного левого интеллектуала. Одной из весьма популярных тем антиколониального вектора неоисторического дискурса стал колониализм в раннестюартовской литературе, прежде всего — в шекспировской драме.Особым вниманием в этом отношении пользовалось последнее законченное произведение Шекспира — «Буря», превратившаяся по воле авторов неоисторического направления в «манифест колониализма». Подобный подход к проблеме образа «другого» выглядит излишне политизированным и не позволяет поместить его в контекст других «других» в драматургии Великого Барда и его современников. Сопоставлению дискурсов «другого» в «Буре» и иных произведениях Шекспира, а также изучению этих образов в рамках неоплатонических ренессансных представлений о Вселенной и посвящен представленный текст.

A way out of the crisis state of the world economic system of capitalism, in which it is located due to the accumulation of a large number of insolvable contradictions, can be a radical change in the socio-economic structure of world economy. And what the future socio-economic system will look like will be influenced by various mechanisms of the "controlled" global chaos of the current geopolitical and geo-economic situation. One of the main such mechanisms is undoubtedly the established economic system of neocolonialism, which was the basis of the development of capitalism of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The form of neo-colonialism changed throughout its development. These transformations were accompanied by the evolution of scientists' views on this economic category. This article discusses the transformation in the views of scientist, leading experts and politicians from different corners of the world on neocolonialism, which began its existence in the second half of the twentieth century and currently exists.

The article is devoted to the final stage in the history of the colonial press of British West Africa. The publication is based on materials from newspapers published in the 1940s — 1950s in Nigeria and Gambia. These publications are stored at the Library of Congress. The authors argue that periodicals are an important historical source for characterizing the processes of political, economic and socio-cultural modernization of Tropical Africa. ; Статья посвящена заключительному этапу в истории колониальной прессы Британской Западной Африки. Публикация базируется на материалах газет, издававшихся в 1940–1950­е гг. в Нигерии и Гамбии. Данные издания хранятся в Библиотеке Конгресса США. Автор доказывает, что периодическая печать является важным историческим источником для характеристики процессов политической, экономической и социокультурной модернизации тропической Африки.

This article is devoted to final period of colonial epoch in British East Africa. Situation in Nyasaland, a part of Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1950s, is at the center of attention. Methodological approaches of this article are principles of new social history. This article is based on the "Nyasaland Times", the main newspaper of this colony, published in Blantyre. This article characterizes daily life of white inhabitants of Nyasaland, their leisure. The author paid attention to lady`s world in Nyasaland, he concludes that this world developed under the influence of British colonial standards. An analysis of economic problems of Nyasaland, its role in economic structure of Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland has an important place in this article. Materials of "Nyasaland Times" show that the top of colony was not agree with the role of agrarian periphery in Federation and tried to find new ways to bring money to regional budget. They tried to use resource potential of territory, to develop local industry. The article proves that white inhabitants wanted to unite for the struggle against political activity of African Congress of Nyasaland. They connected this fact with activity of Soviet Union and its allies in Africa in 1950s. The top of white inhabitants also proved that exit of Europeans from Africa led to many social and economic troubles for black population of continent. The author proves that this newspaper is an important historical source on the history of colonial society in Nyasaland. ; Статья посвящена заключительному этапу истории британского колониализма в Восточной Африке. В центре внимания – ситуация в Ньясаленде, который в 1950-е гг. являлся частью Федерации Родезии и Ньясаленда. В основе методологических установок автора данной статьи лежат подходы, характерные для «новой социальной истории». Статья базируется на материалах крупнейшей газеты колонии «Ньясаленд Таймс», издававшейся в Блантайре. Охарактеризованы повседневная жизнь белых поселенцев в Ньясаленде, их досуг. Уделено внимание миру леди, показано, что он развивался под влиянием стандартов, существовавших в Британской империи. Особое место занимает анализ экономических проблем Ньясаленда, охарактеризовано его место в экономической структуре Федерации Родезии и Ньясаленда. Материалы «Ньясаленд Таймс» позволяют сделать вывод о том, что верхушка белых поселенцев была недовольна ролью Ньясаленда в Федерации как аграрно-сырьевого придатка и активно искала новые источники пополнения бюджета. Предпринимались попытки использования ресурсного потенциала территории, развития ее промышленности для пополнения местного бюджета. В статье доказано, что белые поселенцы Ньясаленда пытались сплотиться в условиях активизации деятельности Африканского конгресса Ньясаленда в 1950-е гг. Они связывали это явление с усилением внимания к Африке со стороны Советского Союза и его партнеров по социалистическому блоку. При этом верхушка белых поселенцев уже в 1950-е гг. указывала на то, что уход европейцев из Африки вызовет обострение социально-экономических проблем, с которыми будет крайне трудно справиться черному большинству. На основе проведенного исследования сделан вывод о том, что «Ньясаленд Таймс» является важным источником по истории колониального общества Ньясаленда.

The reviewed book by Professor Maria Fusaro (the University of Exeter, UK) is one of the key works in the modern historiography of the Eastern Mediterranean. The study consists of an introduction and twelve chapters based on the evaluation of a considerable number of sources, both primary and secondary (748 items), that create a multi-dimensional picture of the Eastern Mediterranean in the 16–17th centuries. The concept of the Venetian state as a "functional empire" developed in the study, along with an analysis of the British commercial expansion into the Mediterranean are placed into a wider context of the socio-economic transformation of the region. The author highlights the ignorance of the Republic's subjects' economic interest and preoccupation with the imperial role of Venice among the major factors that contributed to the failure to maintain its position in the Eastern Mediterranean. The success of the English was facilitated by the institutional peculiarities of their trade network, the crisis of the Venetian fleet, and the economic situation in the region. Among institutional peculiarities, the author stresses the freedom of action characteristic of the Levantine company, well-developed communal connections, the support of the state, and close partnership with Greek merchants. The multi-dimensional analysis of the early modern Eastern Mediterranean presented in the study allows us to both deepen our understanding of the region's history and draw parallels between different colonial systems. The narrative formulated in the book considers not only European and Levantine contexts but also proto-global connections. The combination of these features makes the study under review a part of an essential bibliography for the scholars specializing in the history of the Eastern Mediterranean. ; Рецензируемая монография профессора Марии Фусаро (Эксетерский университет, Великобритания) представляется одной из ключевых работ в современной историографии Восточного Средиземноморья. Книга состоит из введения и двенадцати глав, построена на анализе значительного числа источников и литературы (748 наименований), на основе которых воссоздана объемная картина Восточного Средиземноморья в XVI–XVII вв. В рамках исследования предлагается концепция Венецианского государства как «функциональной империи», а также и анализ процесса проникновения англичан в Средиземноморье, который рассматривается в широком контексте социально-экономической трансформации региона. В качестве одной из основных причин неудачи Венеции в Восточном Средиземноморье М. Фусаро называет игнорирование экономических интересов подданных Венеции и поглощенность ее имперской ролью. Успеху англичан, наряду с экономической ситуацией в регионе и упадком венецианского флота, способствовали институциональные особенности торговой сети. Среди них автор выделяет свободу действий, предоставляемую Левантийской компанией своим членам, развитые связи внутри сообщества, поддержку короны, тесное сотрудничество с греческими коммерсантами. Представленный в монографии многоаспектный анализ Восточного Средиземноморья в раннее Новое время позволяет не только лучше понять историю региона, но и провести параллели между различными колониальными системами. Монография помещает рассматриваемые события в широкий контекст, который охватывает не только Европу и Левант, но включает и общемировые связи. Сочетание этих характеристик делает рецензируемое исследование частью обязательной библиографии для специалистов по региону Восточного Средиземноморья.

This section presents exchanges between intellectuals from Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, and North America who kindly agreed to read and comment on Martin Mueller's article "In Search of the Global East", relying on the situation in their own academic disciplines, work experiences, and the twists and turns of their scientific research and creative challenges. Researchers, academic teachers, exhibition curators, writers, and architects reflect on the power and influence which geographical names exert on academic life, politics, and culture. Starting from Mueller's article on the Global East, as well as his other text wherein he expresses his skepticism of the concept of post-socialism, the commentators, evaluating Mueller's arguments critically, raise a number of fundamental questions. Among these questions is the need to historicize scientific concepts, the issue of the regularly-reproducible misunderstanding (or even exclusion) of the East by Western intellectuals, the tasks the inclusion of the Global East in the overall geographical picture will contribute to, as well as the question of whether the concern that the Global East is not sufficiently heard in the world is narrowly academic. This indirect debate between the author of the key text in this thematic issue and his commentators is significant as an episode of the joint search for a more democratic, creative, and inspiring future for the region that unites Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. © 2020, RUSSIAN SOCIOLOGICAL REVIEW. The article discusses the dual sociological and natural global problems the world is facing today as well as political and social aspects of these problems. The author discusses the major modern ideological and political conceptions of modern global problems: the conception of "equal respon sibility'', the conception of "ecological neo-colonialism" ect. The salient feature of internal and foreign policy in the process are also under consid­ eration. The possibilities of politics in solving global issues are shown.

In the work the reasons of formation of the Russian position in relation to the French colonial conquests in North' Africa in XIX the beginning of the 20th centuries are investigated. Consecutive consideration of sources, the course and consequences of the French penetration into Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco allows to define value of this region in the European policy during the specified period. The Russian political interest in the countries of the Maghreb has been connected with fierce fight of the European powers, first of all France, Great Britain and Germany for strengthening of the influence, and also Turkey for preservation of domination over Barbarian provinces. Russia, without having any claims to the Maghreb, nevertheless, has been forced to correct the policy taking into account a colonial factor which had notable consequences for all system of the international relations. The fundamental moment in definition of the Russian political pOsitions on colonial conquests of France in the Maghreb was the all-European factor, fight of powers within the Eastern Question. Besides the analysis of an official position of the government of the Russian Empire on the matter, in article reaction of the Russian public opinion to events in the Maghreb is considered. Work is based on archival sources documents of the Archive of foreign policy of the Russian Empire and publications of the Russian press of the 19th century.

В статье рассматривается один из наиболее таинственных и малоизученных эпизодов биографии Хо Ши Мина. События, связанные с тюремным заключением и последующим освобождением из тюрьмы в Гонконге, являются предметом дискуссий и различных оценок маститых историков, любителей и даже конспирологов. На основе данных архива РГАСПИ и современных публикаций отечественной и зарубежной историографии, удалось существенно расширить и дополнить имеющиеся знания про данный исторический эпизод. Особое внимание автор уделил вопросу о возможной связи Хо Ши Мина с английской разведкой. The article discusses one of the most mysterious and little-studied episodes of Ho Chi Minh's biography. The event connected with imprisonment and the subsequent release from prison in Hong Kong is a subject of discussions and various estimates of venerable historians, amateurs and even conspiracy theorists. On the basis of documents of RGASPI archive and modern publications of a domestic and foreign historiography, it was succeeded to expand and add significantly the available knowledge about this historical episode. The article, based on British documents, shows the mechanism for building the British colonial policy after the Suez crisis of 1956 during the first Cabinet of Harold Macmillan. In this period (1957-1959), the new Prime Minister made a special emphasis on strengthening the Anglo-American partnership in the colonial sphere and promoting integration initiatives for the colonies and the territories that are gaining independence. These questions have been poorly studied in Russian historiography, but their detailed analysis helps to understand how the degree of prioritization within the well-known concept of Winston Churchill "three majestic circles" of British foreign policy has changed and the process of ousting the imperial sphere from second to third place after Anglo-American relations and European affairs has occurred. The author shows that the new Conservative government, having comprehended the results of the Suez operation that was disappointing for Great Britain, recognized decolonization as a fait accompli, but tried not to force events in the colonial sphere. By 1957 the imperial possessions of Britain continued to be impressive. The chain reaction of the decolonization processes that began in Asia in the 1950s covered the African territories, and H. Macmillan saw as his prime task a preventing the acceleration of the collapse of the colonial system in this part of the globe. Conservatives, continuing to comprehend the profound consequences of the Suez crisis and the colonial experience of other countries, especially France with its failure in Indochina and the ongoing war in Algeria, tried not to delay the granting of independence to the colonies and to keep pace with the times. This understanding of colonial affairs in the UK did not mean a weakening of control; rather, on the contrary, it was necessary to closely monitor the processes taking place in order to preserve the liberated territories in the British and in the whole western orbit of influence during the cold war. Particularly attentive attitude of H. Macmillan personally to these issues showed that the Prime Minister was sensitive to the course of time and rapid changes in the role of the newly free Afro-Asian states in world affairs. ; На материале британских документов в статье показан механизм выстраивания колониального курса Великобритании после Суэцкого кризиса 1956 г. в период первого кабинета Г. Макмиллана. В этот период (1957–1959 гг.) новый премьер-министр сделал особый упор на укрепление англо-американского партнерства в колониальной сфере и выдвижение интеграционных инициатив в отношении колоний и обретающих независимость территорий. Эти вопросы слабо изучены в отечественной историографии, однако их детальный анализ помогает понять, каким образом менялась степень приоритетности внутри известной концепции У. Черчилля о трех окружностях внешней политики Великобритании и как происходил процесс вытеснения имперской сферы со второго на третье место после англо-американских отношений и европейских дел. Автор показывает, что новое правительство консерваторов, осмыслив неутешительные для Великобритании итоги Суэцкой операции, признало деколонизацию свершившимся фактом, но стремилось не форсировать события в колониальной сфере. К 1957 г. имперские владения Британии продолжали оставаться внушительными. Цепная реакция начавшихся процессов деколонизации в Азии в 1950-е гг. охватила африканские территории, и свою главную задачу Г. Макмиллан видел в том, чтобы предотвратить ускорение темпов распада колониальной системы в этой части земного шара. Консерваторы, продолжая осмыслять глубокие последствия Суэцкого кризиса и колониального опыта других стран, прежде всего Франции с ее провалом в Индокитае и продолжающейся войной в Алжире, старались не затягивать сроки предоставления независимости колониям и идти в ногу со временем. Такое понимание колониальных дел в Великобритании не означало ослабление контроля, скорее наоборот, следовало максимально пристально отслеживать происходящие в процессы с тем, чтобы сохранить освобождающиеся территории в британской и в целом западной орбите влияния в условиях холодной войны. Особо внимательное отношение лично Г. Макмиллана к этим вопросам показывало, что премьер-министр чутко реагировал на ход времени и стремительные изменения роли освободившихся афро-азиатских государств в мировых делах.
