This collection of essays looks at the issue of human well-being from the point of view of environmental aesthetics. Questions addressed include: What role do aesthetic values have in advancing well-being? Are there environments that are particularly supportive of well-being? What is the place of aesthetic factors in environmental and city planning? The authors of the first part of the book illuminate the relationship between aesthetics and well-being by discussing such notions and ideas as aesthetic well-being, interactive environmental planning, aesthetic quality in urban planning, aesthetic footprint, and ecological aesthetics. The authors of this part also engage with many topical questions in environmental and everyday aesthetics. For example, Yuriko Saito's idea of green aesthetics as well as Allen Carlson's science-based model of the aesthetic appreciation of nature are critically examined.

Euroopan komissio luotiin jotta se voisi ajaa yhteisöjen intressiä. Sen vuoksi siitä päätettiin tehdä itsenäinen. Mutta koska Euroopan Unionin vaikutus jäsenmaissaan on hyvin vahvaa, myös talouden kannalta, haluavat jäsenmaat vaikuttaa komissioon mahdollisimman paljon. Tämän vuoksi komission itsenäisyys vaarantuu. Perustamissopimukset koettavat hoitaa ongelman luomalla komissiolle joita-kin suojamekanismeja. The European Commission was created so that it could work to fulfil the Community Interest. Therefore it was decided to be an independent institution. But because the European Union affects its Member States very deeply, not least in budgetary ways, the Member States seem to want to influence the Commission as much as possible. Therefore the independence of the Commission is at stake. The Treaties try to deal with the problem by setting some protective mecha-nisms on the Commission. But is it enough? It seems that the Commission gets in-fluenced too much in its everyday work. This influencing starts already at the nomi-nation of the Commissioners, continues all the while when the Commission is decid-ing if new Community legislation is needed and while it drafts new legislation. The substance of the drafts are often influenced very much by the other institutions, Member States and interest groups. What this means is that the Commission can't fulfil its task at seeking the best of the Communities. In many different ways the decisions of the Commission may further the good of one or some interested parties instead of the Community In-terest.

This book approaches contemporary migration to Finland from the perspective of everyday security, presenting an alternative view to theories that examine the links between migration and security from the perspective of securitisation. By treating everyday security as a theoretical concept and as empirical lived reality, the book foregrounds migrants' experiences of (in)security, as well as the perceptions of individuals and groups whose lives are touched by migration. Empirical studies investigate the ways in which security is produced at various levels, transnationally, and in multiple locations where encounters between long-term residents and newcomers occur, highlighting the roles of the welfare state, civic society, and the media. The book explores how everyday security is constructed between interdependent actors on personal, community and societal levels, concluding that the production of everyday security is a mutually beneficial, yet at times painstaking, process for all participants.

The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field's disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.
In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers' home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources.
The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people's homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the "home turn". As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one's own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context.
The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher's field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people's homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.
Tutkimus on tekstintulkinnallishermeneuttinen. Koulutussektorin valtiollinen toimintapolitiikkaohjaus (policy) on 2000-luvulla merkittävästi lisääntynyt erilaisten kehittämisohjelmien myötä. Samalla kohderyhmäajattelu on noussut aikaisempaa keskeisemmäksi osaksi tehtäväkuvaa. Toiminnan suurin yhteinen nimittäjä näyttää olevan vahva tukeutuminen alueyhteisöihin ja niiden konkreettisiin tarpeisiin. ; In Finland there are two different forms of Adult education: vocational adult edu-cation and liberal adult education. In this adult educational research, the focus is in liberal adult education. There are five types of institutions of liberal adult educa- tion: adult education centres, folk high schools, summer universities, sports insti-tutes and study centres. The aim of the research was to increase the understanding of the changes in the missions of liberal adult education institutions. The institu-tions of liberal adult education can be viewed as a system. This study tries to un-derstand the change in the functional environment of liberal adult education insti-tutions observed particularily from the point of view of resource-dependence theory. The point of view is regional. This research is textual analyse utilizing the hermeneutical method. In conclusion, the main purpose is to explain the change of identity of the organizations of liberal adult education by the resoursedependense chain. There are three types of empirical materials in this study. Firstly, the research literature, secondly the reports of evaluation and developing processes of liberal adult education and thirdly the appointments of liberal adult education organizations permissions to support learning institution in years 2012 and 2013. The state covers approximately half of the expenses of liberal adult education institutions. State grants are a critical resource for liberal adult education institutions. The state of grants for liberal adult education organizations has been declining in last years. The ground for legislative regulation and state grants has changed. Also, the states control has changed to be more generalized. The marketorientation of organizations has increased. There has been bigger and bigger pressure to get more and more resources for the other sectors of education and markets. The support of self-motivated individual growth has been the core content of liberal adult education. During the 20th century liberal adult education has become more and more institutionalized. Also, the quantity of hobby-oriented courses in institutionalized frames has increased. The functions of liberal adult education establishments have continuously been adapting to fit both the needs of the local community, and the resources available. The changes in the content of the activities have been incremental and the goals of activities have spread. In the big picture, the actions of liberal adult education organizations have been adaptive and conservative. The action has never been labelled transformative. In the 21st century, the need for changes in structure and amount of organizations has increased. Also, there are needs to change the content of the activities. The state needs more explanations to the benefits of the activity, also the state requires focus to be put on special groups. The liberal adult education organizations can be seen as an actor of state granted service and education system. The 21st century is labelled by new thinking of the welfare state and the change in the role of the state. Governanlity is now a bigger part in the states' role in the activities. Government policing has increased significantly with the development of different advancement programs in the 21st century. Liberal adult education institutions are not a part of the regional development. They are only partners in "learning regions". Their orientation is mostly in educational practices. The identity of the organizations is that of a service provider. The identity is based on local, provincial or nationwide basic. All liberal adult education organizations are linked in many ways to their own environment. The benefit of the action is justified by the equal access for all and the need for educational services. The main common attribute is regionalism and the practical needs of the local community.

It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.
Tarkastelen kuntaa alati muuttuvana sosiaalisena konstruktiona. Fenomenologisen tutkimusotteen avulla teen näkyväksi kuntajohdon haastatteluista koostuvaa aineistoa analysoimalla, mistä puhumme, kun puhumme kunnasta. Tällä tavoin rekonstruoin kuntakäsitteen. Tutkimuksen käsitteellisinä lähtökohtina ovat kuntakäsitteen ulottuvuudet, hallinnonuudistusten sivuvaikutukset ja kunnan onttoutuminen analogiana valtion onttoutumisesta. Tutkin aihetta empiirisesti tapausesimerkin avulla, Kainuun hallintokokeilua tarkastelemalla. Näitä tehtäviä yhdistää, niistä ammentaa ja niitä samanaikaisesti ruokkii määrittelemäni kunnan ydintehtävä, raison d´être, jonka mukaisesti kunta on elämisen edellytyksiä luova itsehallinnollinen paikallisyhteisö. Muutoksen kokemisessa olennaista on kuntajohdon käsitys kunnasta. Palvelutehtävään nojaavissa kunnissa muutos näyttää vaikeammalta, kun taas sellaisissa kunnissa, joissa kunta nähdään moniulotteisempana kokonaisuutena, muutos näyttäytyy helpompana. Palvelukuntakäsitykseen perustuva näkemys kunnasta saa muutoksen näyttämään lopun alulta. Monipuolisempi kuntakäsitys auttaa näkemään muutoksessa uuden alun, jossa kunta on mahdollista keksiä uudelleen. ; Local government, change and the change of local government This research concerns the change of local government. I focus on the question, how local government appears in a context of administrative reform that reduces the tasks of local government. I also study what kinds of effects the reform has on local government. The aim of this research is to increase understanding about the multidimensionality and the extension of this kind of reform. The research is em-pirical focusing on one case, the regional self-government experiment in Kainuu region, Finland. In my empirical case study research I show what meanings local government is given to, what kinds of broader societal effects the change of local government is connected to and what the change of local government as a whole is about. I consider local government as a constantly changing social construction. By using phenomenological research setting and by analyzing the interview data, I demonstrate what we talk about when talking about local government. By doing this I reconstruct the concept of local government. The conceptual basis of this research is based on the concept of local government, the side-effects of adminis-trative reforms and hollowing out of the local government as an analogy of hollow-ing out of the state. As a result of my grounded theory based analysis I have built an empirically based theory of local government. I examine the effects of the reform that are re-lated to local government and the meanings that local government is given to in the reform context. The local government related effects are 1) organizational and functional effects, 2) effects related to management and 3) the changes in local government conceptions. The rhetoric about change is contradictory when it comes to change, constancy and the nature of change. In my research I have also defined four main tasks for local government based on the data. These tasks are 1) democracy task, 2) economy task, 3) community task and 4) well-being task. These tasks are combined by the core task, raison d´être, of local government that ac-cording to my definition is as follows: local government is a local self-governmental community creating prerequisites for living. The basic tasks are em-phasized differently in different municipalities and the emphasis varies over time also in single municipalities. Local government can, thus, be local government in various ways still maintaining its basic essence. My research indicates that reducing local government tasks affect differently in different municipalities. Task reduction as such does not destabilize the status and meaning of local government. The way local government leaders understand local government seems to be essential when figuring out how the change is experienced. The change seems to be more difficult in municipalities that lean on the service task while the change seems to be easier in municipalities where local government is seen as a more multidimensional unity. Grounding the local government conception on the service task makes the change appear as the beginning of the end while the more versatile conception helps in seeing a new beginning in the change where it is possible to re-invent local government. Thus, local government will not hollow out due to the task reduction but the change reveals the hollowness of service municipality conception. Instead, it seems that the idea of local government has been lost during the decades when the state has given constantly new tasks to the local level. In the light of my research the change of local government appears as a cumulative process with no clear beginning nor clear end, as a process in which various pulses cause new drivers that lead to new changes. The direction of change varies in different municipalities which increases the differentiation of municipalities. The change fosters change so that the existence of local government can be seen as a constantly changing continuum where local government is continuously reconstructed and where are some firm basic elements that structure the existence of local government. The change that the reform has brought up has opened up the chance to make visible the various dimensions of the essence of local government and the various ways of how local government can exist. The difference and differentiation of municipalities challenge the conception of local government as a generic, homogenous group, the conception that has for decades steered the legislation concerning Finnish local government. This change of mindset will have effects not only on the local level but also on the national policy and research concerning local govern-ment. Local government cannot be categorized in one, single unitary form, but instead, various parallel local government realities emerge.

Tutkittavina olivat 20 Lapin yliopiston eMBA-johtamisvalmennettavaa. Muotouttaminen on yksi vaihe johtamisidentiteetin kehittymisessä. Peli toimi mestarikisälli -mallisesti pelin ohjatessa ja opastaessa pelaajaa mahdollistaen hänelle turvallisen harjoitteluympäristön. Pelaajat nimesivät itselleen pelin lopussa ammatillisia kehittymisen tavoitteita kuvaten millaiseksi johtajaksi he haluavat kehittyä. ; Theme for this research is the use of simulation game in developing leadership skills. Research problem is What kind of experience is it for Executive MBA-students in Lapland's university to play Productive Leadership-game and what kind of results players achieve for their leader-ship development? The research examines the effect of Leadership Simulation game in the development of leadership skills. Experiences and game outcomes of Executive MBA students from Lapland University were used to measure the effectiveness in learning through Simulation Games. A target group of 20 students played the Simulation game for about 4 months and research material was collected from their learning diaries and group discussions. The objective of my study is to evaluate experiences of playing simulation game and assess how results affect the players' leadership skills. There is still lack of simulation games suitable for leadership development. Simulation has been found to be suitable for training leadership because it is almost impossible to learn complicated leadership structures through traditional training methods. The theoretical and methodological approach of this study is Phenomenological and hermeneutical, in other words gathering experiences and interpreting their significances. The study is based on experiential and practice-based learning theories. The target groups experiences of the Simulation game varied from despair and difficulties in the beginning to winning and finally to feeling in control of the game which eventually lead to success. When players played together in their own work community the game served as a simplified description of leadership practices, thus as tool for developing the organization's leadership. Playing helped to understand the supervisors' work. Players identified and were able to name a few development needs in their leadership skills after comparing themselves with what they applied based on the leadership theory and what they gained from using the Simulation learning method. The players carried out professional formation during the play, in other words repeated the game and found the cause-effect relationship between game theories and players' operations and actions in the game. The formation is an essential phase when developing a person's leadership identity. The game produced a master-apprenticeship-like environment by directing and guiding the players and giving them a safe practicing setting where a player can repeat actions as many times as needed without disrupting their real organization.
