The article critiques the mainstream American invocation of constructivism as a kind of "commonsense," utilitarian approach to foreign policy analysis (FPA). Such a strategy allows social scientists to seem "modern" while remaining resolutely antipostmodernist. Revisionism is also questioned, however, for countering rather than confronting positivism & social scientism. These "counterhegmonic moderates," while rejecting positivism, remain as bound by rationalist objectivity as are conservatives. Postmodernist constructivism for FPA requires more than listening; it also entails a radical subjectivity & participation. 8 References. K. Coddon

Discusses the utility of social constructivism for the study of international institutions with an eye toward a confluence between rationalist & constructivist paradigms & problem-oriented rather than paradigm-driven research. Metatheoretical assumptions driving rationalist & constructivist institutionalisms are compared. Three logics of social action are described -- consequentialism, appropriateness, & truth seeking or arguing -- in terms of how these two paradigms weight them: rational choice emphasizes a logic of instrumental rationality & consequentialism & is self-consciously agency centered, while constructivism can be divided in more structural accounts stressing the logic of appropriateness & rule following & on more agency-centered ideas devoted to argumentative rationality & persuasion. Key terms used in the constructivist approach are defined before specifying how constructivism differs from rational choice in looking at international institutions & how the two approaches to institutionalism might meet. For the latter, three examples are presented: (1) Rationalist & sociological versions of institutionalism theorize about path-dependent processes. (2) There is a difference between the taken-for-granted nature of social norms or the enactment of cultural scripts & arguments about bounded rationality. (3) There is a controversy regarding causal vs constitutive effects of political institutions. Paradigm convergence is exposed through an analysis of the life cycle of international institutions, focusing empirical contributions to the study of the emergence & change of international norms & institutions & their impact on domestic political life in terms of rule compliance. It is concluded that combining the different logics of social action to show how they complement each other is the most promising direction for future institutionalist inquiry in international relations; implications of this for the practical knowledge of international politics are shared. "Im Zuge der gegenwärtigen feministischen Debatten um eine neue und nicht-essentialistische Formulierung weiblicher (als eine Form geschlechtlicher) Identität rücken andere strukturelle Dimensionen von Subjektivität zunehmend in den Blick. Wenn 'Frau' ein positionaler Begriff ist (Alcoff/ de Lauretis), müssen die jeweiligen Positionen, die uns zu dem machen, was wir sind, in ihrer gegenseitigen Wechselwirkung und Bedingtheit analysiert werden. Diese Positionen können als zumindest drei strukturelle Differenzen konzeptualisiert werden: Klasse, Geschlecht und Ethnizität. In diesem Vortrag sollen systematische Defizite der gegenwärtigen (De)Konstruktivistischen Debatte um Geschlecht ausgeleuchtet werden, wobei das Augenmerk auf die Vernachlässigung der gesellschaftstheoretischen Dimension im Sinne des ungleichen Zugangs zu Ressourcen) liegt. Die gegenwärtige Verengung auf den 'diskursiven Guerilla-Krieg' kann durch eine entsprechende Versöhnung zwischen der Analyse symbolischer Strukturen einerseits und soziostruktureller/materieller Kontexte andererseits überwunden werden. Zu diesem Zwecke wird der Leib als Knotenpunkt von Biologischem, Symbolischen und Sozialem (Braidotti) eingeführt und die These vertreten, daß sich soziale Differenzen als sichtbare Mobilisierung von Ressourcen denken lasssen. Hierfür wird auf das Habitus-Konzept von Bourdieu als "leiblich-affektiver praktischer Sinn' zurückgegriffen. Dadurch kann der feministische Konstruktivismus soziologisch-materialistisch gewendet werden." (Autorenreferat)

Man mag meinen, Bourdieus Begriff des Habitus sei nun schon zur Genüge diskutiert worden, und in gewisser Weise möchte ich dem auch zustimmen (als Überblick vgl. Krais und Gebauer 2002). Im Zentrum dieses Beitrags steht denn auch keineswegs der Begriff des Habitus, wie er von Bourdieu entwickelt wurde. Im Mittelpunkt soll hier vielmehr der Vergleich zwischen diesem Begriff und der Theorie der Habitualisierung stehen, wie sie von Berger und Luckmann (im Anschluss an Gehlen) entwickelt und vorgestellt wurde. Dieser Vergleich, dessen größerer Teil der Rekonstruktion von Berger und Luckmanns Ansatz gewidmet sein soll, weist m.E. auf eine gewisse gegenseitige Rezeptionsschwäche hin: Die späte Übersetzung der "gesellschaftlichen Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit" ins Französische und auch die fehlenden Referenzen auf diese Arbeit in Bourdieus früheren Arbeiten weist darauf hin, dass die sozialkonstruktivistische Wissenssoziologie – immerhin einer der einflussreichsten Ansätze seit den 60er Jahren – in der formativen Phase von Bourdieus Theorie kaum wahrgenommen wurde. (Tatsächlich war auch der wissenschaftspolitische Ort der späten Rezeption von Berger und Luckmann nicht besser geeignet, eine Rezeption von Seiten Bourdieus zu fördern. Übrigens beruht diese fehlende Rezeption durchaus auf Gegenseitigkeit. Bourdieu selbst musste erst eine große Berühmtheit erlangen, um von der Wissenssoziologie wahrgenommen zu werden.) Diese fehlende Wahrnehmung (ein besonders im deutsch-französischen Austausch bekanntes Phänomen) hatte auch zur Folge, dass offenkundige Parallelen der Theorie und der Forschung bislang wenig zur Kenntnis genommen wurden. Diese Parallelität (oder Komplementarität, wie ich sie unten nennen möchte) wird besonders virulent seit Bourdieus Arbeit über "das Elend der Welt" (Bourdieu 1993a; 1997b). Denn spätestens hier schreibt er – unter anderem auch durch den Einsatz der qualitativen Methode – der "Subjektivität" eine Bedeutung zu, die zuvor in seinem Werk nicht (jedenfalls nicht in diesem Ausmaß) sichtbar geworden war. Dies ist auch der Grund, der zum Vergleich mit der sozialkonstruktivistischen Wissenssoziologie führt. Denn dieser Ansatz zeichnet sich nicht nur systematisch durch das aus, was in der theoretischen Diskussion (keineswegs sehr genau) als Subjektiorientierung bezeichnet wird. Und zum anderen weist er eine große Nähe zu qualitativen Forschungsansätzen auf und war an der Entstehung und Entwicklung mehrerer solcher Ansätze beteiligt (vgl. Knoblauch 2000). Vor diesem Hintergrund scheint es nur folgerichtig, beim Begriff des Habitus anzusetzen, um einen solchen Vergleich anstellen zu können. Denn im Werk Bourdieus ist Habitus sozusagen das Bindeglied zwischen Gesellschaft und Subjekt (genauer vielleicht: das Einfallstor der Gesellschaft ins Subjekt). Der Beitrag verfolgt zunächst eine allgemeinere Gegenüberstellung vergleichbarer Begriffe beider Theorieansätze. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Vorstellung der Doxa große Ähnlichkeiten mit dem (Schelerschen) Begriff der relativ-natürlichen Weltanschauung aufweist; entsprechende Parallelen finden sich auch zwischen der Verkörperlichung und der Leiblichkeit, der Unbewusstheit und der Sedimentierung, der Pluralität sowie der Vermitteltheit. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll dann die Theorie der Habitualisierung kurz skizziert werden. Dabei soll die These vertreten werden, dass beide Begriffe als komplementär betrachtet werden können: Während Habitus die sozialstrukturellen Aspekte menschlichen Handelns in den Vordergrund stellen, erlaubt es der Begriff der Habitualisierung, die subjektive Genese des Habitus zu skizzieren. Damit eröffnet er auch eine Möglichkeit, die bei Bourdieu häufig vernachlässigte Dimension des Subjektiven bzw. des Bewusstseins in den Blick zu bekommen.

The chapter discusses the implications for comparative politics of the debate over revising & reshaping social theory, focusing in particular on the contributions of constructivists. A general description of constructivism is followed by comments on alternative, competing constructivisms, then by a discussion of why constructivism is a valuable approach for comparativists. The next section examines a case study of sovereignty & the construction of political/economic boundaries in early modern Europe, an example that demonstrates the usefulness of the constructivist approach. The chapter discusses the soft & rule-oriented modes of constructivism as they have been brought to bear on Gorbachev-espoused Soviet "new thinking," the collapse of the USSR, & international relations in the post-Cold War era. The fall of the USSR was met by multiple & competing political narratives constructed by interested agents. The West's narrative, guided by the topoi of soft constructivism & largely anti-Marxist, has dominated the mainstream & refocused international relations analysis on neorealism, neoliberalism, & globalism. Reflecting on the debate over constructivisms, disciplinary motives, & the task of social science expressed throughout the volume, the chapter proposes that these arguments over ethics & normative standards enhance international relations scholarship. There are presented two ideal models of identity production: 1) based on essentialistic imperatives, and 2) close to constructivism in its various versions, like post-classical one.
