"New Yorks most valuable citizen" – this honorary title was given to Adolph Lewisohn. When he was born in Hamburg in 1849 as the son of Orthodox Jews and successful merchants, a career as a merchant was put in his cradle. In search of personal freedom he persuaded his strict father in 1867 to let him go to New York. The fact that Lewisohn, as an industrialist in the USA, will generate millions of euros in only twenty years time would have seemed like a fairy tale to the young migrant. With dedication, foresight and flexibility he builds a copper empire. For four decades he then supports countless charitable projects with millions of euros. The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Society) also owes him one of the biggest donations it received when it was founded. This is the first biography of this exceptionally successful businessman, art collector and international philanthropist.
; Copper is an essential part of the natural balance. Total copper contents in arable soils vary depending on the site, the way land is used agriculturally, and inherent copper levels. Although total copper contents may be very high in these soils, the levels detectable in soil extracts are very low. Non-parasitic impairments of plants can therefore hardly be diagnosed. In addition, copper contamination via the soil crop plant pathway is not important from a human-toxicological point of view. Plants have innate mechanisms protecting them against too high copper contents. Phytotoxic effects occur below the levels which are important in human toxicology. The entry of copper in environmental compartments is limited by a number of protective legal regulations. Limits are set by direct restrictions (of use) or indirect restrictions (of distribution) with the aim to minimise copper contents in harvested products (food and feed).
; Mean Cu contents of uncontaminated agricultural soils in Germany (background values) are between 8 and 42mg Cu/kg soil (DM), with most of the soils (90-percentile) staying below 70mg Cu/kg. Due to its low mobility copper accumulates in the soil if it is added above plants' requirements. According to current law (soil protection ordinance, sewage sludge ordinance, biowaste ordinance), total copper contents >60mg Cu/kg are to be seen as critical. Copper inputs into agriculture mainly stem from the use of mineral fertilizers and farmyard manures as well as the application of pesticides. Typical Cu loads from fertilization range between 50-500g Cu/ha·a. These are well below the loads allowed for the application of copper containing pesticides, which may be up to 6000g Cu/ha·a according to EU legislation. In contrast to this, the German soil protection ordinance defines a tolerable additional load of 360g Cu/ha·a based on ecotoxicological grounds.

; The present case study examines the work integration of Sudeten German displaced persons using the example of the Mansfeld copper-shale mine, whose revival after the end of the war in 1945 was of great importance for the overall economy of the Soviet occupation zone. In the course of this development, displaced persons were specifically settled in the catchment area of the Mansfeld copper-shale mine. After the causes of the need for labour have been identified, the type of extraction, accommodation and the problems arising from the settlement of new workers are discussed, as well as proposed solutions. Similarly, the developments in the field of labour recruitment between 1947 and 1949 are discussed, in order to then question the success of the integration of displaced persons into the working process of the Mansfeld copper-shale mining industry. The aim is to describe the link ...
