Georg W. F. Hegel's treatment of work is analyzed to illustrate the extent to which Hegel acknowledged the significance of work for human development. After noting Karl Marx's understanding of work as an essential human activity, it is contended that such sentiment is present in Hegel's philosophy; for example, it is claimed that Hegel's (1892) account of the biblical narrative of humankind's fall highlights his perception of the division between nature & labor. However, it is maintained that Hegel's understanding of work as a necessary component of the desire for self-realization & self-improvement is clearly articulated in his (1975) contention that this drive for self-development is most evident in "free artistic creation." It is subsequently contended that Marx shares Hegel's belief that the freedom acquired by economic activity is not the ultimate step of human (or in Hegel's case, spiritual) development. Hegel's assessment of the connection between labor & alienation & his strategy that allows human laborers to overcome such alienation are then contemplated; differences between Hegel's & Marx's accounts of resolving social alienation are also noted. 33 References. The factors determining the relevance of this article are: the rapid growth of the Chinese piano school and its high artistic achievements in the last decades of the 20th - early 21st century; the presence and recognition of a significant artistic contribution (performing, pedagogical, composing) made by the outstanding pianist Liu Shikun to the development of the modern Chinese piano school; insufficient study and scientific understanding of the artist's artistic experience in the context of the formation and development of the Chinese piano school.
