; The mass media play a central role in contemporary societies, being the news a fundamental actor in shaping our identities as citizens and our worldviews. Through the stories and representations built by journalists, public opinion produces and reproduces a shared cognition of reality. The main argument of this doctoral thesis is Crimea's annexation to the Russian Federation as it was represented by some of the prominent Russian national newspapers. Crimea became a Russian republic in March 2014 following a bitterly contested by the international community referendum, which generated a crisis in relations between Russia and the West still far away from being resolved. The aim of the thesis is two-fold. The first one is to analyze the narrative and linguistic strategies through which discourses of the annexation, along with their cultural and ideological implicatures, have circulated through the print media. The second goal is to verify whether and to what extent it is possible to identify alternative and competing narratives in the Russian press. To the purpose, a corpus of texts has specifically been prepared. The corpus consists of one hundred and eighty news and commentary articles retrieved from six national newspapers. The newspapers selection was based on popularity and circulation criteria. The analysis involves three dimensions: the representation of national identity, the representation of social actors and the representation of reported speech. The methodology adopted draws from Critical Discourse Analysis, Discourse Historical Approach and the model for the representation of social actors developed by Theo van Leeuwen (1996). Overall, a considerable degree of uniformity characterizes the newspapers analyzed. Due to their loyalty to the Kremlin, Izvestija, Rossijskaja Gazeta, Komsomol'skaja Pravda, and – to some extent – Kommersant '' reproduced or even anticipated, the discourses circulated by the political elite. Novaya Gazeta and Vedomosti take a different line, albeit with distinct nuances, consistent with their ideological position as part of the so-called systemic opposition. Regarding the representation of national identity, the whole discourse was built on the polarization between the Russian nation and an external enemy, namely all those who do not recognize Russia the status of a 'Great Nation'. In this 'Great Nation' conceptualization, a foreground position is given to ethnic belonging, which is made to coincide with linguistic identity. The discursive strategies employed by journalists can be summarized as follows: emphasis on the difference between 'us' and 'them', emphasis on the alleged historical similarity between the present time and the Second World War, black and white description of the enemy, delegitimization of the Ukrainian state, shift of blame and responsibility by reversing the victim/culprit scheme. Concerning the second dimension – the representation of social actors – the strategies and narrative schemes adopted in no small extent duplicate the representation of the national identity. The discourse is articulated around an intense polarization between an in-group, namely the ethnic Russians, and an out-group, namely all the rest. An example of such polarization is the use of epithets drawing from the memory of the WWII – in particular banderovcy, and opolcency -, to leverage the emotional sphere of public opinion and to exclude from the discourse any possible articulated positions, distinctions, or identities that eschew binary representation. The third analytical dimension has highlighted to what extent reported speech constitutes a significant issue in many texts. The preferred tendency is that of direct quotation, isolated from the text by graphic signs such as quotation marks or hyphens. A second element is the tendency to favour neutral verba dicendi to introduce speakers' utterances: zajavit ', skazat', ob'jasnit' are those that appear to have the most significant number of occurrences. The reason for that is two-fold. Firstly, the need to give the article a tone of objectivity and, at the same time, drama, especially in cases where words with a strong emotional connotation, spoken by ordinary citizens who participate in the events are reported. The second reason – more relevant – is connected to the argumentative function that journalists attribute to reported speech in their articles. In conclusion, the research has outlined how the media discourse relating to Crimea has essentially framed according to binary logic. The polarization around the dichotomies us or them, friend or enemy, good or evil, has contributed to the impoverishment and the trivialization of the entire public discourse.
The present study investigates how Italian and German populist leaders use conceptual metaphors on their Facebook pages to describe the migration crisis that has hit their respective Countries. By means of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis, metaphors are examined as a means of representing migration in mass media. The aim is to analyse the creation of the different metaphoric representations in the reference languages as well as to ascertain possible intercultural differences or common argumentative patterns which might be identified in the media language of the two politicians. The research is based on a corpus of posts shared on Facebook from January 2017 to December 2018 by the Italian leader of "Lega Nord" Matteo Salvini and from the German leader of "Alternative für Deutschland" Jörg Meuthen. The contrastive analysis of metaphors representing migration and migrants in Salvini's and Metuthen's posts shows that migration is represented with negative conceptual potential through images transmitting anxiety, despair, threats to life. In addition, the results show how the Facebook posts reproduce a "distorted" perception of immigrants and, consequently, a state of insecurity and general panic.
Genital modifications are rites of institution related to gender binarism. The article elucidates how only some of them came to be depicted as "traditional", irrational, backward, and harmful by the humanitarian morality, which, after having associated them to "non-therapeutic" reasons, labelled them as "Female Genital Mutilation". The authors illustrate the problematical aspects of this globalised order of discourse on FGM, by articulating theories on humanitarian reason, gendered subjection and vernacularization. Thanks to the ethnography, the essay highlights that critical political anthropology is needed in order to stop concealing the multiple subjectivities who are implicated in this issue.
This chapter focuses on the intermodal and intralinguistic analysis of Dutch corpora made up of written and oral, translated and interpreted texts taken from the Dutch House of Representatives and the European Parliament. After providing a broad overview of the textual genre (the parliamentary questions), we went into greater detail about the methodology, which combined a quantitative approach based on corpus linguistics and insights obtained from Critical Discourse Analysis. The qualitative analysis was carried out on four levels: register, text cohesion, compound words and immigration terminology. The results showed that, on the one hand, there are a few differences between the three communicative contexts, but also between the oral and written modes. Interesting, on the other hand, are the results obtained from immigration speeches, with more politically correct language in the multilingual context of the EP, and the tendency in interpreted discourses to neutralize or reinforce some ideological aspects of the original discourses.
The present essay addresses the question of whether or not economics can usefully progress without establishing a special link with philosophy. It aims to provide an overview for a broad audience of working economists and to suggest possibilities for research to those with specific interests in the foundations of economic discourse. After the introductory and motivational remarks of sections 1 and 2, section 3 deals with the crisis of the neopositivist research programme and its impact on economic epistemology. Section 4 presents the main reasons accounting for the recent revival of the political dimension in economic research. Section 5 is concerned with the moral relevance and presuppositions of economic processes and outcomes and addresses the problems faced in making value assertions a part of the critical discourse of economics. Few general considerations conclude the paper.

The purpose of this research is to offer a contribution to the study of the growth of anti-establishment political groups in the UK, specifically, the United Kingdom Independence Party, a typically perceived right-wing political movement whose main belief is the separation of the UK from the European Union. First part of the research will mostly draw upon literature review on Political and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), a multifaceted approach to the study of text and talk: discourses influence social relations and knowledge systems through language, and the theoretical structure of CDA demonstrates the complex workings of power and ideology in discourse in sustaining particular orders. What is intended to prove, where verifiable, is a re-shape of the negative biased definition of the term 'populism' which has been attributed for years by mainstream politics. The study will give an overview on the interchangeable Other-construction depending on one of the great three issues at stake: anti-European Union, anti-Immigration (Economic Migrants) and anti- establishment political talk. Substantial through the data analysis is the shift from a biological to a cultural concept of racism now conceived as ethnopluralism, that is the straightforward realization of an impossible coexistence among different culture within one nation.
In current Italy, the path of non-citizens' inclusion has been characterised by the continuous encounter with legal and administrative barriers. The paper, using a variegated set of methods and research strategies (documental analysis; critical discourse analysis; key informants interviews; administrative data analysis), shows the results of a research program focused, on one hand, on the policies of exclusion at local level and, on the other hand, on the policies of integration at national level, analyses the ways with which migrants' obstacle course has been structured and the reasons why it is so arduous. In Italy, especially after 2005, the institutional vision of immigrants' integration has deeply changed. Now, the idea of integration is related to a differentialist vision of immigrants' inclusion and to several forms (explicit or implicit; visible or invisible) of institutional discrimination. These forms have caused an increase of civic stratification and, as a consequence, a 'precarisation of belongings'.
The Anthropocene discourse has rapidly become popular and common to very diverse kinds of knowledge. It is nonetheless a very contested category. Starting from the critique that political ecology has moved to it, we reflect upon its narrative's blindspots and find that they can be seen as a symptom of a more general impasse of the neoliberal governance of nature and of the ecologic crisis. On the one hand, the narrative of the Anthropocene brings about a poshumanist vision that potentially decentres anthropocentrism. On the other, this same possibility becomes vehicle for increasingly profound and less reflexive intervetions by human beings on the biosphere, in particular via technoscientific develpments. This paradox seems to respond to a specifically capitalist necessity of valorising "Nature", while not being conducive to concrete solutions to the ecologic crisis. But if we are first able to see the Anthropocene in the present historical phase, and thanks to specific kinds of knowledge that emerge now – then the very issue of knowledge is central to inventing new and more ecological ways of (re)embedding ourselves in the world. What ways of knowing can comprehend the emancipatory characters of the posthumanist implications of the Anthropocene and at the same time avoid tendencies towards the domination of the biosphere?
In 2014 the Italian Institute of Anthropology launched an appeal to remove the word 'race' from article 3 of the Italian Constitution, substituting it with 'skin color' and adding an explicit denial of the existence of 'alleged races'. Similar appeals were presented in the same year, on the grounds that since 'race' is a social construct whose existence is denied by genetics, using the word, however critically, gives it legitimacy and reality. The lukewarm debate raised by the proposals has mainly revolved around whether the banning of a word is an effective weapon in the fight against racism. Because of the European reluctance to use the notion of race as an interpretive paradigm and the limited familiarity with Critical Race Theory, it has not dealt with issues that are instead central to the discourse on race in Great Britain and the US, that is to say race as foundational in the making of Western modernity and deeply implicated in the structuring of the liberal order. Race, to use David T. Goldberg's words, is "one of the central conceptual inventions of modernity," and as it often operates undercover, producing apparently colorblind effects, we need to make its daily work visible.
