This paper examines the cultural production of "Canada" and "Canadians" in The Newcomers, a 1953 film produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Using a form of discourse analysis that sees talk as social interaction and identity as socially and locally constructed, this study illuminates how "Canada" and "Canadians" are talked into being in a film ostensibly about immigration and immigrants. While illustrating the moment-to-moment construction of these social identities in this specific context, this study also illustrates how ethnomethodological tools could be used to critically analyze the production of ideologies and identities in audio-visual media. This thesis uses an interdisciplinary approach, combining anthropological theories and ethnographic research, to examine how the period of Yugoslav socialism influences the present and the future of the Serbian people. Yugoslavs have lived together in the common country for decades under familiar national and cultural identity, but with many different histories. It is challenging to explain and interpret the history of a nation, in particular if said nation no longer exists. The Yugoslav nation has existed for only 80 years, but its identity lives on and influences the present. Is there only one Yugoslav history and, if so, who gets to write it down? How to interpret the history and the heritage of past times when they are contradicted by the personal experience of witnesses of that past? The fieldwork conducted in the Museum of Yugoslav History in Belgrade illustrates the Yugoslav past has been portrayed and mediated by official authorities. Museums are important actors in memorizing processes and shaping the cultural memory of communities, but sometimes they are confusing and disharmonic. Museums preserve testimonies of past times and values of those times for the future, and as such play a crucial role in shaping the cultural memory of a nation. However, the Museum of Yugoslav History is incomplete and lacks the colorful description of many dimensions of Yugoslav heritage. This thesis proposes a novel contextualization of conditions in which the Serbian society remembers the past. It presents another lecture of the past through analysis of the missing cultural products and offers additional dimensions to the comprehension of the past. Images of Yugoslav socialist past and the consequences of the fratricide war are still dominant in the present, official and everyday discourses. Analysis of books, exhibitions, theater plays, movies, and songs offer a new interpretation of the history, often closer to the personal stories, and opens new perspectives on the Yugoslav past, heritage, and expectation of the future. ; Cette thèse traite la reconstruction de la mémoire collective en Serbie. Halfway between academic history and traditional leisure time activities, genealogy searches its place. Looking for one's ancestors is not a new phenomenon, it can be found in all eras in the history of France. After allowing the dominant class to justify and consolidate its place in society for centuries, genealogy has become a hobby acclaimed by the middle class, an unusual hobby for everyone. While historians are still considering genealogy only like amateur practice, without recognized research method, without an officially recognized degree, genealogy space is getting organized. Dans ce livre, un groupe international de dix-huit chercheurs se penche sur cette interface entre esthétique et recyclage culturel et propose des éléments de réponse à ces questions. This article brings forward an overview of the Romanian-URSS co-productions, in an attempt to explain how film functioned as an instrument of cultural diplomacy between the two countries and between the East and the West. While Romania has been involved in numerous cultural exchanges and in many other forms of cinematographic collaboration with the Soviet Union, this analysis focuses only on the films whose artistic responsibility had been entrusted to a Romanian filmmaker. Five films were thus identified, including a war film made in the 1960s and four musicals and/or films for children and youth made during the 1970s and 1980s. The fact that all of them put music more or less in the foreground appears as no coincidence. This option responded to a strategy oriented towards the Western public, and towards celebrating a Romanian-Soviet friendship cleansed of political tensions. Nevertheless, in a cinematography where politicized films were the main priority, such co-productions played a significant role in the shaping of a popular culture and of a cinema of entertainment.

On the basis that a general definition of diversity of production has been missing throughout extensive and lasting research, this study has aimed to provide a three-dimensional definition of diversity based on an extensive overview of literature on diversity. Thereafter, this definition enables me to look into the relationships between diversity of production and market structure as provided by theoretical economic analyses and empirical investigations in cultural and media industries. This definition is henceforth used to build up a set of indexes designed to assess diversity of production in the recording industry and applied to 74 countries over the 1980-2005 period. I find that amongst all variables, socio-demographic and economic ones are the most important. I also show that diversity of production is not a monolith and that it is actually made of components that may be contradictory. From a normative point of view, I discuss the extent to which cultural diversity should be promoted, firstly from the consumers' point of view, and secondly with consideration of cultural diversity that includes also diversity of identities. Finally, I analyse the influence of policies, either specifically designed to protect cultural diversity, like quotas of French songs on radio broadcasting in France, or on a larger scope, such as competition policy and intellectual property. I thus show how the cultural diversity issue has been becoming increasingly important on the global level. ; A partir d'une revue extensive de la littérature consacrée à la diversité, nous fournissons une définition tridimensionnelle de la diversité de la production. Une telle définition nous permet de remédier à une lacune de l'analyse économique. Elle nous donne la possibilité également d'étudier sous un angle nouveau les relations entre la structure de marché et la diversité de la production, telles que décrites par la théorie économique et les recherches empiriques appliquées aux industries de la culture et des médias. Grâce à notre définition, nous construisons un ensemble d'indices approprié à la mesure de la diversité de la production de l'industrie musicale. Nous appliquons ces indices à une analyse statistique sur 74 pays entre 1980 et 2005. Nous mettons en avant les déterminants de cette diversité, en premier lieu les variables socio-économiques et démographiques. Nous montrons également l'existence de contradictions internes à la diversité de la production, entre ses différents aspects. Une discussion de nature normative conclut ce travail. Elle porte d'abord sur les raisons mêmes de la promotion de la diversité culturelle, d'abord du point de vue de l'utilité pour le consommateur, ensuite dans la mesure où elle englobe la diversité des identités. Nous analysons enfin l'impact de politiques soit spécifiquement conçues pour protéger la diversité culturelle, comme celle des quotas de radiodiffusion de chanson francophone, soit générales : celle de la concurrence et la propriété intellectuelle. Nous montrons ainsi comment la diversité culturelle est en train de devenir un objectif d'envergure mondiale.

The work on black populations in Mexico has long been confined to the inner circle of some specialists, mainly historians. In recent years, studies have been on the rise and have dealt with contemporary issues concerning these minority populations, which are beginning to express public demands of a cultural and, more tirelessly, political nature. The literature review makes it possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current theoretical trends, while at the same time placing the challenges of Mexican issues on the national scene and within the 'afro' studies in Latin America. The strategies and means of action of the actors — academic, political, cultural — who take part in the debates are then analysed. Faced with a phenomenon of rapid and largely exogenous ethnicisation, a final part explores some alternative avenues of research. ; For many years the studies on black populations in Mexico focused mainly on historic themes. During the past few years, studies regarding Mexican black populations have begun to multiply and to diversify towards a more contemporary approach. These studies are responding to a small but real mobilization of some Afro-Mexican groups, which are venturing into the cultural and public arenas, and less frequently into the political realm. The critical revision of the present and past bibliography allows us to pinpoint the challenges and specificities of the Mexican situation. Furthermore, we analyze the strategies of the participants in the current debates, mainly academic, political and cultural activists. La «generación inocente» (creadores que nacen entre 1924 y 1934) fue profundamente impactada por la guerra civil y la postguerra durante la cual el franquismo llevó a cabo un verdadero escamoteo de la realidad. En los años 50 la mala conciencia de estos hijos de burgueses desemboca en un compromiso artístico (realismo social) cuestionado por las mutaciones políticas, socioeconómicas y culturales de los años 60. The guilty conscience of the bourgeoisie leads, during the 50's, to an artistic commitment (social realism) called into question by political, socio-economical and cultural changes of the 60'. These transformations impose a new language coupled with a recreation through memory of the stolen time, setting the stage for a polysemous writing style contasting with the reductive monosemy of previous productions.

For many years the studies on black populations in Mexico focused mainly on historic themes. During the past few years, studies regarding Mexican black populations have begun to multiply and to diversify towards a more contemporary approach. These studies are responding to a small but real mobilization of some Afro-Mexican groups, which are venturing into the cultural and public arenas, and less frequently into the political realm. The critical revision of the present and past bibliography allows us to pinpoint the challenges and specificities of the Mexican situation. Furthermore, we analyze the strategies of the participants in the current debates, mainly academic, political and cultural activists. Facing a process of rapid and exogenous ethnicization, we are proposing alternative approaches and leads to consider in this field of study. ; Les travaux sur les populations noires au Mexique ont longtemps été cantonnés au cercle restreint de quelques spécialistes, principalement historiens. Depuis quelques années, les études se multiplient et abordent des thématiques contemporaines concernant ces populations certes minoritaires mais qui commencent à exprimer publiquement des revendications d'ordre culturel et, plus timidement, politique. La révision bibliographique permet de pointer les atouts et les faiblesses des courants théoriques actuels, tout en situant les enjeux de la problématique mexicaine sur la scène nationale et au sein des études " afro " en Amérique latine. On analyse ensuite les stratégies et moyens d'action des acteurs – universitaires, politiques, culturels – qui participent aux débats. Face à un phénomène d'ethnicisation rapide et largement exogène, une dernière partie explore quelques voies de recherche alternative.
