The article reflects on the apprenticeship period and modes of reasoning and expertise of the Police aux frontières (PAF - the border police) and customs, based on qualitative research using informal interviews and observation. An initial period of research revealed specific professional cultures in the two organisations. The author distinguishes different forms of interactions relating to foreigners between the police and customs, including the particular professional ethic of customs in which the war against drugs is seen as a national priority. Analysis of life history interviews underlines the power of early socialisation to affect professional practice. A typological analysis, however, identifies three areas common to both police and customs which transend to some extent the modes of professional knowledge.

«"Honour To Our Councillor". Ethnography of A Post-election Custom in Dordogne».
Nicolas Mariot, Florence Weber [21-37].
The ethnographic observation of the custom of «Mai d'honneur» for councillors in three rural districts of Dordogne allows to understand how a traditional gesture («to plant the Mai») has been integrated in municipal republican election. According to the context, this honorary gesture is subject to tiny formal variations, that reveal the great variety of relations between councillor and citizens. This article examines in particular one situation where all those taking part in the ceremony form a egalitarian circle of acquaintances. The ritual exchange reinforces the electoral one and expresses in the language of the custom the nature of relationships between electors and representatives.

Abstract In a micro-owners' populated country, where wages pay was vital, the old persons were particularly vulnerable. Parisian custom did not afford a sufficient protection for the widowers and for the widows. It left the parents without resort, and still worse, without power. Then the parents used various processes to make sure they would have a minimal subsistence, in agreement with the custom.
