Employing the data from the 1881, 1891 and 1931 censuses of India on the Jewish population, estimates of the birth and the deathrates have been generated. Analysis of the data reveals that the Jewish population had low fertility and low mortality as compared to many other Indian religious groups. Late entry into marriage seems to have been the main determinant of the low level of Judaic reproduction. From 1951 onwards, the population of Jews is on the decline due to heavy out migration. Given low fertility and heavy external outflow, the Jewish population is likely to disappear from the Indian sub-continent.
