"The story of The Foundling begins in the bustling New York City of the mid-nineteenth century where a half million people, mostly immigrant and poor, struggled to turn their dreams of a better life into reality. Some thirty thousand children roamed the streets of the city and accounted for most of the felony crimes. Thousands more never lived long enough to experience such a dreadful existence-they died of neglect, disease, malnourishment, or abandonment. Sister Mary Irene Fitzgibbon, Sister Teresa Vincent McCrystal, and two other Sisters of Charity responded to this urgent need. With a gift of five dollars toward their work, they opened one of the first foundling asylums in the United States on October 11, 1869. That very evening, a desperate mother left her baby on the steps of The Foundling's brownstone in Greenwich Village. From those humble beginnings, The Foundling has grown to become one of the largest organizations of its kind in the country, providing services far beyond adoption and foster care. This book was first published in 2001 and much of the content reflects the organization's work up until that date. The actual recession/depression is a radicalized continuation of a cyclical forty years long transformational slowdown of growth through basically stagnant fluctuations. With this slowdown is connected a serial of controversial, crisis-generating & finally unsuccessful general politics- & policy-change unprecedented in the contemporary world. An analysis of the societal history through sequences of developmental counterpoints & through the logic of great societal, political-economic & political cycles demonstrates that causes of cyclical economic & societal movements in general, & of actual stagnation & crisis especially, are mostly noneconomical. They are mainly political. In short, their political foundation is in a radical actual & previous change in the equilibrium of a dynamic tendency of the modern political space. This equilibrium is here called "modern normal." The modern normal (MN) is for us a tendentional space/structure of equilibria in the middle of (1) the political, (2) the personal/individual, (3) the whole world space, & (4) the space of the state/society. The actual kind of that disequilibrium or denormalization of modern normal indicates a process which is usually called totalitarian. In our actual case, the focal point is moved toward financial corporations as pseudo-statal regulators of economy, politics & society. Here, this is the Matrix-capitalism as a feedback of an urban legend & an analytical pattern. Generally, in the long run it is also a process of denormalized or bad & unsuccessful public- & business-policy, especially as development-, growth- & transformation-policy. This Matrix-capitalism, which is dominated by global financial corporations, is developing itself in a cyclically denormalised tendentional space/structure between: (1) the unpolitically "economical," (2) the unindividually "personal," (3) the unwholly "global," & (4) the unstately, unsocially, & anti-economically "denational." An increasing dissatisfaction with existing models used in analyzing political development led to a critical examination of the assumptions underlying them. A propositional inventory was carried out by members of a seminar on the work of a dozen political development theorists. The conclusions supported a preliminary, impressionistic observation that this body of theory, while recognizing powerful influences originating in the industrial nations over the Third World during the colonial era, uniformly fails to include in the list of key variables the continuing influences of the industrial nations today over the options open to peoples living in the poor countries of the world. Several possible explanations for the lack of congruence between the theoretical models--essentially utilizing indigenous variables--& the reality of strong, continuing exogenous influences on Third World nations, a reality that is well documented in the international relations literature are examined. Although no definitive answers can be expected on this question, the Cold War setting out of which much political development theorizing came, the impact of the "unit of analysis" (the nation-state) on model building, & the conservative influences of structural-functionalism seem associated with the divorce between theory & practice. An alternative view of the political development process is advanced. It is based on the probability of the continued existence of strong influences exercised by the great industrial powers over the Third World. The analysis rests on data derived from the networks of influence that link the industrial nations of the West with the countries of the Third World, although the analysis could similarly be based on data from the developing nations within the Soviet sphere. The alternative developmental model hypothesizes that the advanced industrial nations exercise multiple political & economic controls over the options open to poor nations & that these controls act as constraints holding back development. Abstract. Tanzania is currently experiencing the rapid increase of the proportion of older people in its population. It is not yet an ageing populous country but the proportions of its ageing population is fast growing towards the direction of the most ageing populous countries of Sub-Saharan Africa such as Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa and Botswana. In the next twenty years the proportions of older people in Tanzanian will grow from 5.5 percent to 7 percent. Older people in rural areas especially are ageing in the midst of complex social and economic problems, which seriously affect their wellbeing. The main challenges which affect them are related to income security, generalized poverty, dwindling traditional support systems, health and social exclusion. In spite of these challenges, many older people in Tanzania still play a critical role in economic life and in provision of social services such as care of orphaned grandchildren. Problems related to livelihood of older people in Tanzania present key challenges to the government to develop social policies which can adequately address social protection needs of present and future older generations. The complexity of ageing in rural areas also points to the vital need to engage in research on intergenerational relations in order to inform policy development as well as to enable the government to apportion generous old age entitlements in the form of social pension to deserving older persons. This study is a response to the above mentioned need by focusing on the efficacy of social pensions on intergenerational family solidarity. Much research work on ageing and social pensions in Tanzania has focused on overcoming poverty, vulnerability and elder abuse. Yet the issue of relationship between social pension and intergenerational family solidarity has remained mostly untouched. This study responds to this issue by addressing the questions: How will family solidarity be affected by the introduction of universal social pensions? Can different patterns of welfare affect intergenerational relations? How does intergenerational solidarity exist today? What do older people expect to happen in case social pensions are introduced? And what might be the outcomes of social pensions for future development of Tanzania? To respond to these questions, a single point in time cross-sectional survey method was used to collect data (n=968) from research participants aged 60 years and above in two districts of Mwanza region. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews from individual participants. Descriptive statistics, mainly frequencies and simple cross tabulation were conducted on both univariate and bivariate variables to describe the data. The key findings indicates that both older males and females are characterized by high levels of informality – older females in particular being more affected than older males. Older females are widowed that old males who can relatively maintain stable marital partnerships into old age. These social inequalities in education and marital status affect older people's capacity to reciprocate and give social support. It is also found that the extended family system is the prevalent family model in which older people live. Families are fairly large and co-residence is very high with adult children and grandchildren. Co-residence is a strong sign of intergenerational solidarity and family support. A family member exhibits strong association in the form of the frequency of contacts and also maintains social support exchanges – particularly instrumental support. In spite of the support offered in the family, older people are expecting state cash transfers in the form of universal social pension to support them with many aspects of their livelihood: daily needs, health needs, and family cohesion. This aspiration for the state intervention on the support of older people is probably the indication that older people have recognized the reduced support from their families. In addition, as Tanzania is heading towards the decline of birth rates, these changes points to the possibilities of further decline of the functions of extended family systems in the near future. Therefore, public pension in the form of universal social pension is expected to boost welfare of older people by crowding-in the functions of the extended family. Therefore, these findings prompts us to speculate that cash transfers in the form of old age social pension is probably the relevant approach not only for old age welfare in family meeting broader national developmental objectives in Tanzania solidarity but also for meeting broader national developmental objectives in Tanzania by promoting economic growth, health, rural development, reducing income poverty and social inequalities, strengthening communitybased care, and increasing social contract between citizens and their government.

The social fragmentation of societies is one of the greatest challenges for peace, democracy and human rights worldwide. For some years now, observers have been witnessing ever-stronger tendencies towards social division, also in Western societies, which had been believed to be united for so long. Rising inequality, the rejection of previously shared values and growing scepticism towards public institutions suggest that social cohesion is at risk. Against this background, it seems more important than ever to understand what factors hold a society together – and when such cohesion is most vulnerable. Protecting and strengthening social cohesion has therefore become an objective of many activities at the local, national and international levels, and academics have started to develop methodologies on how to measure social cohesion (see, with further references: Leininger et al., 2021). This paper aims: • to give a systematic overview of the literature on African concepts of social cohesion; • to introduce the discourse around African concepts and to see which relevant concepts of social cohesion can be located in African societies; • to analyse in more detail some key African concepts and their core elements and to see which conceptual dimensions and insights on determinants of social cohesion differ from the mainstream, while inviting scholars to add further to this listing; and, in particular • to gain a better understanding of the academic discourse on social cohesion in Africa by analysing the concepts, determinants, origins and context of social cohesion theories as well as the risk of Western bias in identifying concepts for social cohesion in the African context. One of the questions that inspired the present research project is how we could better understand which relevant concepts of social cohesion in African societies are particularly emphasised by African scholars and how "Western" concepts of social cohesion relate to the various African academic approaches to the topic. Further research questions that were raised in the context of the present paper are: • How can traditional knowledge and African social theories contribute towards contextualising the debate on social cohesion in Africa? • What are the key aspects of the concepts of social cohesion in selected African countries, and how can these be analysed? • How did pre-colonial societies in Africa understand social cohesion, and what insights can be gained from this? Methodologically, we identify and analyse concepts within the African context in order to gain insights into basic elements of social cohesion. This literature review draws on different sources such as ethnophilosophy, political philosophy, religion, culture, economics and international discourses. This literature review is the first part of an assessment of concepts of social cohesion in Africa. It is followed by a systematic comparison of social cohesion concepts in specific African countries. The academic benefit is to identify the current state of research on social cohesion in Africa, to identify the need for further research and to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon of social cohesion. In addition, we aim to deliver developmental value through these publications by helping decision-makers come to evidence-based decisions and synthesise as well as make use of scientific evidence for development practice.

"The book will be used in a variety of ways: To jump-start high-potential development training programs As part of an organization's training program in 'managers as coaches To support self-study and self-directed development on the part of high-potential leaders As an HR handout piece to help senior executives understand their roles as HIPO mentors and sponsors To provide a useful approach to HIPO development for L&D, OD, and HR leaders who have been tasked with initiating high-potential leadership development programs To support executive coaching certificate programs sponsored by universities and private consultants As a useful handout tool for executive coaches who are attempting to bring their clients and clients' managers in alignment regarding the intended goals, outcomes, and process involved in high-potential development. Part 1 Chapter 1: Identify the Gap The chapter explains how to use focus groups and assessment interviews to identify such positions. It also explains how to use scenario development to forecast future leadership requirements, and to identify those future demands that are very different from the current state. Chapter 2: Build the Plan: This chapter suggests taking the opposite approach, by first identifying the key demand features of next-level assignments. Simply put, the development plan should be able to spell out how a leader will be needed to grow and develop in order to successfully meet next-level challenges. Examples would include the ability to develop yearly sales and revenue forecasts, negotiate multiproduct sales with key corporate clients, or secure sponsorship for corporate initiatives. Chapter 3: Identify Test Points and Hurdles: This chapter explains how to pinpoint critical organizational events and experiences that can provide a clear test of where a leader currently is in the development process. Chapter 4: Guiding Accelerated Development: This chapter provides helps readers distinguish between "forward-focused coaching", or coaching for next-level assignments, and remedial and transitional coaching. It offers guidelines for improving the effectiveness of managerial coaching, third-party coaching, and peer coaching. Chapter 5: Tracking & Evaluation: Many leadership development efforts fail because they lack a formal process for helping leaders track their progress against set development goals. This final chapter spells out a simple approach for setting up such a tracking system. It also explains how to leverage technology (Ft. It spells out what companies are looking for in identifying high-potential leaders, with emphasis on the concept of learning agility. Chapter 7: Spanning the Gap: This chapter outlines a simple proves that leaders can use to solicit information from their managers and senior leaders about changing job requirements, critical development gaps, and how those gaps translate into leadership competencies and experience. Chapter 8: Building Your Plan: This chapter shows readers how to take the lead in working with their managers to identify and clearly define development goals. It also explains how leaders can build their development plans around "naturally occurring events" within the leader's work schedule, to ensure that development actions are closely linked to business requirements.
