The possibility of rational social criticism is explored in philosophical terms. A need is seen for an absolute standard by which societies are to be evaluated. Natural human needs do not provide such a standard; nor does the nature of rationality as such. However, a standard may be found in the preservation of the openness of discourse that, among other things, makes social criticism possible. The possibility exists of engaging in the kind of dialogue that can eventually lead to the resolution of disagreements. This argument is applied to questions raised by feminism. W. H. Stoddard

Le discours communautaire, by Bernard Lacroix
THE COMMUNITY DISCOURSE BERNARD LACROIX In France community contestation today affects institutions as différent as schools the Church prisons or psychiatrie hospitals This fact precedes twofold question What is the position of this form of contestation in the social structure of the propagandists Does this social position enable one in return to understand the appearance of contestation in quite specific institutions and in these alone The research hypothesis is that there are homologies between discursive and social structures the language of contestation referring back in the last analysis to power relationships in the social field Thus commu nity contestation which takes on utopian aspect in that strictly speaking it belongs neither to discourse nor to practice would appear to find its expla nation at the juncture between institutional pressures and the subordinate position of its authors within the dominant class Revue -fran aise de science politique XXIV 3) juin 1974 pp 526-558.
