The role of the population of Eastern Ukraine and local elites in learning first coal deposits. Opening of Donbass coal - much politicized issue in the Soviet era. Modern analysis of archival documents and literary sources, summarizing data on coal discovery reveals that the following: Most likely, the population of Eastern Ukraine-Rus (later - land Zaporizhian Sich) opened the Donbas coal availability empirically - through practical collisions to the XVIII century. At the beginning of the XVIII century. search for coal in the Donbas intensified due to the salt pans - evaporation of salt water and Tor and Bahmutskiy lakes and wells for brine sampling. In 1721, Nikita Vepreyskyy-Managing Bahmutskiy salt mines, landrat, nobleman and Simon Chirkov-Bahmutskiy fortress commandant took samples of coal in two places - in the tract Skelevate and on the White river. Coal samples were sent to St. Petersburg in the Mining College (received 20 January 1722). Their tests showed high quality coal. The first coal trade was organized in 1723 by the same M. Vepreyskyy and S.Chirkov. In the coal mining and fishing during August-September 1723 were about 200 people unemployed. Coal is found using both the salt and in the forge - itwas the first mine and the first industrial use of coal Donbass. Priority official opening of coal Vepreyskyy and Chirkov official confirmed reports of special expedition leader G. Nixon to the Mining Board (from May 25, 1725). Ore maker G. Kapustin not related to the discovery of coal in the Donbas. According to official reports mentioned a special expedition leader G. Nixon, H. Kapustin was not even in the Donbass. Start the industrial Donbass in the second half and especially the end of the XVIII century. and is closely linked to the needs of uncovered new deposits of coal and mass for the purposes of the first Black Sea Fleet steamer, and then - for use in the metallurgical process. A special role in the industrial development of Donbass coal and steel as the region played a Scottish engineer Charles (Charles) Gascoyn (1737-1806), director at the time the largest in the world Karronsky Ironworks. All mines, mines and geological party Donbass were attributed to the Lugansk plant and report directly K. Gascoyn. This contributed to the intensive development of themining industry in the region.
The article observes the transformational processes in educational environment of the Donetsk region and hightights the vectors of pro-European and reverse models of educational processes. The author emphasises on the differences between reformation and indocrination, alanyzes upbringing of the younger generation and necesserity to develop a program of prevention the manipulative methods which influence on the consciousness of youth through the educational channels. Education of Ukraine has become the prolongation to the Soviet system. Russification and the relics of Soviet values have played a key role in the process of losing of Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region and Lugansk region. The occupation of these territories lays a deeper diversity in worldvie, because the occupants support the basis of the "Russian world" through education and mass media. Ukrainian education has gone from deideologization, humanization and national orientation to the European vector of change. The reform of Ukrainian school is aimed at forming an active position of student in the modern world. The Donetsk region have suffered from a strong russification of schools, which even today demonstrate the lowest rates for teaching on Ukrainian language. The occupied territory of the Donbas is subjected to political and cultural reprogramming of population according to the Russian inrerest. They do it through the educational processes by the way of forced introduction of a pro-Russian model into school curricula. The processes of indocrination appeared in the purposeful reorientation of teaching courses and program material according to the Russian context. In the content we could see the shifting emphasis, revision of the humanitarian disciplines in the discourse of Slavic (Russian) world restoration. It is important to develop methodological support and a broad informative basis for responding to a humanitarian attack by a neighboring state.
The author analyzes dynamic changes of social structure of Donbas region that were caused by numerous migrations and governmental industrialization. These factors converted Ukrainian territory into a biethnic region with the pro-Russian vectors. It is indicated that elimination of Ukrainian villages took place during collectivization, collapse of the traditional frame of the society, and Holodomor of 1932–33 – a famine-genocide with physical elimination of millions of people. Demographic losses of the Ukrainian rural population, its substitution by migrants from nearby territories, deprivation of economic ground through the prohibition of private peasant economies, as well as deportation during the Soviet period, deprived the most numerous national group of possibilitiess for future development. The industrialization, guided by the state, systematically changed the social and settlement structure of the population. Numerous migrations, aimed at the industrial production, caused massive flows of the Russian population to the urbanized cities. As a result, migration dynamics unified and assimilated different ethnic groups with the Russian lifestyle, language, and culture as the pillar favored by the state. It is indicated that the social base of the industrial region was formed as a conglomerate of labor migrants, deported population, amnestied and demobilized persons, whose values were corrected by the state through dividing them into loyal and disloyal to the Soviet regime. It is distinguished that the economic crisis, shutdown of unprofitable mines in the region negatively influenced the population and entailed social tension, taking into account the settlement structure geared to production maintenance. The poor social position of Ukrainians from the professional standpoint became the specific of the region. In fact, leading positions in profitable spheres and administration were taken by the members of other ethnonational groups. The author argues that the social specifics of Donbas, correlation of ethnonational and social-professional structure of the population did not favor public activity and political influence on the development of Ukrainians, which resulted in the humanitarian loss of the region.
Donetsk is a city, which located in the south-eastern part of Ukraine, the beginnings of which can be traced back to the last quarter of the ХVІІІ century. During the ХХ century the city of Yuzivka – Staline – Donetsk turned into an industrial centre in within the Russian Empire and later the USSR. Accordingly, it was formed its monumental-memorial space, the analysis of which is the purpose of this research. Legislative documents and registers have been worked out for its implementation historical and cultural monuments, statistics, periodicals. The article showed that the monumental tradition of Donetsk was formed mostly in the Soviet era, most intensively in the 1950th – 1980th. The monuments concerned the significant events of that time – «the Great October Socialist Revolution», «the Civil War», «the Great Patriotic War», many objects are dedicated to work, including mining. They purposefully worked on the formation of Soviet identity of citizens. A tribute to Ukrainian history and culture has been found in the monuments T. Shevchenko, I. Frank, B. Khmelnitsky. However, their installation is small formal – except for the first, these objects were placed on the periphery of Donetsk. It is shown that in the years of independent Ukraine in the city was installed one and a half dozens of monuments dedicated to people whose lives and activities they were related to Donetsk or Donetsk region – A. Solovyanenko, J. Hughes, Holocaust victims, internationalist soldiers, militiamen dead, the mother of women, victims of political repression, victims of Chernobyl catastrophe, rescue hero and others. Сonstruction of monuments in the postsoviet decades focused on fostering pride in prominent countrymens and on this led to the formation of regional patriotism. With Soviet-era monuments have always been preserved alongside new ones memorials, what contributed to the position of the Donetsk City Council, deputies who repeatedly stated the need for the demolition of the Soviet memorials. In the course of the study it was possible to reach a conclusion mainly Soviet filling the monumental and memorial space of Donetsk, which is also on boundaries of the XX–XXI centuries did not undergo significant changes, which influenced the formation specific identity that fit into the notion of local, «Donetsk» patriotism.
After a brief anti-religious "storm of heaven" campaign inspired by Nikita Khrushchev, the period of exacerbation of the ideological crisis in the Soviet Union (1965-1985) became relatively calm for religious organizations. In the USSR in general, the Ukrainian SSR and Donetsk region in particular, the largest number of communities and believers was the Russian Orthodox Church. Soviet religious politics, which remained openly atheistic, began to change towards the acceptance of the Church's existence during the reign of Leonid Brezhnev. This trend was also reflected locally. The author's attention is focused on the regional aspect of the interaction between the Soviet authorities and the Orthdox Church.
The article considers the peculiarities of ethnonational processes in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, discloses social and political foundations of shaping specific Donetsk identity as the basis for formation of a separated space. It emphasizes that politization of contemporary national relations in the region manifests itself in propaganda of fake identities and forcing of assimilation processes in occupied territories.

; Article offers the concept of a nation, which combines the notion of national identity and nationalism as an ideology. Using ideas of C. Hayes and A. Smith, it is shown that nationalism as an ideology is present in any nation, since the latter is a system of social action, organized around the cultural system, which is structured around a core doctrine of nationalism. The concept of "core doctrine of nationalism" was introduced by A. Smith to designate a number of statements that are present in all the nationalistic ideologies. Peculiarities of formation/revival of national identity in post-Soviet Ukrainian society through the prism of the relationship of national identity and nationalism as an ideology are offered. The dynamics of the spread of nationalist identities in Donetsk for the period from 1994 to 2010 have been analyzed. And author has determined two types of nationalist identity: explicit and latent. The latter is characterized by the presence of nationalist attitudes that are inherent to the explicit type of nationalist identity, but without identification with the social group of nationalists. Hypothesis about existence of radical political nationalism in Donetsk has been offered in article.

In particular, the report made by Oleksandr Bilokobylskyi was concentrated on professional responsibility of intellectuals; Volodymyr Biletskyi elucidated place of Ukrainian intellectual community in the world context; Mykola Tyshchenko emphasized that intelligentsia is always in a natural opposition to authorities.
The author considers welfare of the population by way of example of the Donetsk region in the context of the Soviet social policy. The study is topical since many important aspects of socioeconomic life of the Soviet people need to be examined. Among them there are material possibilities of the Donetsk residents during the 1980s through the prism of the social standards proclaimed by the Soviet government and the modernity. The conclusions, which had been made in the historiographical review, permitted to continue the historical explorations in the formed historical direction. On the basis of statistical and archival materials, the paper proves the improvement of the citizens' social standards in the form of the growing incomes and their prevailing over expenditures, the dynamics of growth of savings. The real increase of material resources was inconsistent since they could not be used completely because of the deficit of most goods and services. The study contains the structure of expenses for meals in a general budget, the caloric content of a consumer's diet. The dynamics of food prices growth in the chronology of the period under investigation, the sources of arrival of these products and social consequences for an everyman deserve special consideration. The researcher touches upon a living wage in the context of the Soviet social stratification of the Donetsk region as an example. The examined sources, materials and literature permit to conclude that the living standards proclaimed by the Soviet government did not correspond with the real state of things. In the author's opinion, the reasons for this were the inefficiency of planning, the corruption and the stagnation of the administratively command economy. However, an attention should be paid to the noted relativity of historical conclusions in the context of welfare of the Donetsk region population in the 1980s.
The directions and vectors of political development of modern political parties of Ukraine oriented to the electorate of the East of the country are determined. It was clarified that in conditions of ideological vacuum and weak institutional base of parties, further atomization and strengthening of regional political currents are traced. In the conditions of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as a result of military aggression, further deepening of the party crisis and apathy can be traced.
The article clarifies and analyzes the reaction of the population of Donetsk region to the "Russian spring" and the military invasion of Donbass. The mechanisms of the Russian special coordination center in resolving the military confrontation in the Donetsk region in order to incite public hatred to demonstrate the alleged «internal conflict» and not the aggression of the Russian Federation have been studied. The evolution of the mood of Donetsk residents in connection with the active hostilities in eastern Ukraine and the reasons for their changes have been established. Thus, it was found that the revolutionary changes were perceived ambiguously by the residents of Donetsk region. This was due to their significant presence under the influence of those media outlets that discredited the events on the Maidan and their supporters. Relevant sentiments were used by both internal and external forces that pursued their own goals. This led to a socio-political confrontation between pro-Russian forces and supporters of a united Ukraine. The active resistance of the Ukrainian population to the «Russian Spring» and the desire of the majority, according to opinion polls, to thwart the Kremlin leadership's plans to provoke internal conflict and forced it to intervene militarily with paramilitary and military groups. They were disguised as local «militias» who spread bloodshed and enmity through various provocations. However, the offensive of the Ukrainian army and the weak support of the inhabitants of the terrorist activities of the «DNR» threatened the existence of the Russian occupation administration, which prompted official Moscow to introduce battalion tactical groups of the Russian Armed Forces on the mainland of Ukraine. Their intervention led to significant losses of the Ukrainian army and the signing of a plan for a peaceful settlement of the situation in the east of the country, the so-called Minsk-1. This divided the territory of Donetsk region into temporarily occupied and controlled Ukraine. After active hostilities, the attitude of Donetsk residents towards Ukraine and its army changed, as a significant part of them sought to withdraw the latter from their region; the number of supporters of the "independence of the DNR" increased and, at the same time, the number of those who sought to join the region to the Russian Federation decreased.
