How was it possible that, in a rather peaceful and, to all intents and purposes, not particularly antisemitic Dutch society, more than 75% of the Jewish population were arrested, deported or murdered in concentration camps during the Shoah? Can all of this be blamed on the Nazi occupiers? The eminent historian, Hans Derks, explains this mystery for the first time by looking closely at the social and religious characteristics of Dutch society. He also unveils the extensive collaboration of the country's state-bureaucracy with the German authorities. This uniquely perpetratororiented book about the Dutch Shoah offers shocking conclusions about the persistent contribution of Dutch scholars to racist ideologies and eugenic measures aimed at creating a new, racially pure Dutch society under an authoritarian leadership.

; In 1986, the first House of Literature (Literaturhaus) opened in Berlin, a literary mediation actor with a year-round offer and a permanent location. Further foundations followed in other cities – from 2005 also in Scandinavia. The concept is expanded, varied and modified. The transfer is the reason for this comparative work, which is at the same time one of the first comprehensive investigations of the Literaturhaus. In eight case studies from Germany and Scandinavia – in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Göttingen, Copenhagen, Oslo, Bergen and Gothenburg – the dissertation portrays the Houses in their own peculiarities and displays the abstract version: the institution Literaturhaus. On a broad material basis, it analyses a dynamic institution, which is by no means history, and places it in its context. Very different yet always interlinked and entangled aspects are presented in this way and provide numerous connecting points for subsequent works. The Literature houses' balancing between for instance financial concerns and aesthetic demands, between socio-political intentions and artistic motivations, or between 'classical' moderated readings and innovative event formats is a central momentum. One focus is on the detailed analysis of the programmes and programme brochures. The study contributes to the academic research of cultural institutions such as Houses of Literature, their practices and their impact on contemporary literature (mediation). In addition, it addresses practitioners, who deal with the House of Literature in their working life or who themselves leadingly develop it further.

"In this work, one of Latin America's most renowned legal philosophers conducts a comprehensive survey of the ancient Greek understanding of the law, drawing on texts by poets (Hesiod), philosophers (Anaximander), playwrights (Aeschylus and Sophocles), and historians (Herodotus and Thucydides). The book ends with a finely detailed analysis of the relationship between language and reality in Aristotle, and the emergence of the notion of the system and its subsequent introduction into Roman law. The author's in-depth study of all these aspects makes this volume an essential reference for philosophers, jurists, and historians"--
