Today we live in a complex society, where social, ethical and political dynamism bring out various difficulties in the management of educational and relational dynamics. The phenomenonof globalization brings into being various questions related to social, political and educational dynamics. First to emerge is the question of the relationship between people and political institutions, whereby experts ask themselves whether the ongoing process of globalization is truly realizing the cosmopolitan ideal sustained by the Enlightenment intellectuals pre andpost-World War II. Globalization, the theme of citizenship, the sense of belonging and active participation in society resonates strongly. One wonders if we can really consider ourselvesas full citizens of the world. "Planetary" citizenship is such because as a member of a community, not only for moral connotations but also for what concerns the rights of the humanbeing; first of all, the right to well-being, and access to all that allows man to emancipate himself and to live in the world with dignity. Today, globalization highlights an idea of citizenshipand that of a person tending to take on new forms within the changing scenarios of the world. Everything seems to revolve around a global thought. It is in this context that education is requiredto meet the challenges of forming citizens of a new world. According to the prospect of globalization that therefore requires a new Paideia (Salmeri 2015) for authentic planetary citizenship.
At the base of the philosophical and anthropological reflection underlying gender and sexuality is the impossibility of defining exactly the two concepts and the boundaries that separate them. If it is true that in the vulgate the 'sex' is what is defined by biology, then by nature, for what it concerns the 'gender', this concept refers to categories of cultural and social type. Contemporary thought has entered a crisis in the difficulty of uniquely defending the poles of nature and culture, and this because the criteria of normativity that had always been adopted epistemologically in the past creak before the evidence of their historical-cultural relativity. As Foucault pointed out, gender is what more than any other category has been subjected to a process of naturalization / biologicization exploited for political purposes (in the broad sense that the term can assume in the Foucaultian theory of biopower). Western society, especially starting from the modernity inaugurated by the Enlightenment, has begun to expand to all forms of knowledge a scientific approach which is only fictitiously descriptive but which in fact imposed a pre-packaged vision of reality by disguising itself as de-historicized social mechanisms.
Considered within the long process through which Milan has become a "city of exhibitions", the "Mostra nazionale delle Arti e dell'Industria" 1881 is of crucial relevance. On that occasion, twenty years after the country's unification, the roaring Excelsior Ball in the background, Milan displayed its self-portrait in the pavilions under the motto "Labor vincit omnia", standing as "moral capital of Italy". Such an ambitious project relied on a series of volumes – Mediolanum (Vallardi), Milano 1881 (Ottino), Milano e i suoi dintorni (Civelli), – offering the radiant image of a close and hard-working community. In this perspective, such a close collaboration between the ruling class and Milan-based intellectuals during the exhibition represented a model: promoted by a state-of-the-art publishing industry, the initiative fostered a synergy between the educated members of society, be them Milan-born or adoptive, who gathered in institutional venues as well as within the "repubblica della carta sporca". Writers and journalists, engineers and economists, technicians and scientists, engravers and artists were all committed to sketch the portrait of the "città più città d'Italia" (Verga). They all stood on the common ground provided by a sound value system, never giving way to bombastic statements, and by the shared interests of a modern civil society: a common ground made firmer by the Enlightenment and Romantic tradition and a Smilesian confidence in positivist culture. Milan's hard-working ethics is well summarized in the slogans of Milanese pride: initiative, inter-class solidarity, lay tolerance and charitable philanthropy; a strong tie to "cose serie, cose sode"; an idea of progress meant as cautious evolution; the promotion of a wide-ranging knowledge able to combine the humanities with "utili cognizioni", strongly suspicious of any kind of abstraction. Common sense, intended as the combination of balance and integrity, was considered as the rule of daily life, while the public sphere was governed by an efficient local government priding itself on being miles away from the idle talk of the political capital. Recovering Cattaneo's motto - "convertire il mondo moderno in mondo nostro" - the "moral capital" rose to the challenge of industrial progress within the European context, against any form of short-sighted and regressive entrenchment.
The aim of this paper is to underline a particular aspect, often underestimated, about the role of Historical Geography as an important discipline in defining future planning guidelines; this discipline, against current opinions who wants it more interested in antiques that in civil commitment, is more projected on the future than other geographical approaches (i.e. political and economic geography), which are often not able to study and understand lessons from previous historical periods to describe current situation, which is often presented as permanent and unchanging. This topic is mainly developed repositioning the eye of current geographers in the Age of Enlightenment and in the subsequent French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Ages, when Geography had an important role among scientific studies, especially considering its function in infrastructure planning for civil and military purposes, mainly expressed through the figure of geographer- engineers. The prominence of Geography is also put into evidence in 18th and 19th Centuries Encyclopedias, where geographic approaches show a close relation and complementarity with other natural and historical sciences, a relation that would be desirable also for current situation.
; From the Middle Ages, the cartographic representations made in Portugal were mostly local and mainly originated for war purposes or geopolitical confrontation. This is the reason why they were considered secret documents and accessible only to very few people, such as military staff, politicians, and diplomats. With the "Época dos discobrimentos" the cartographic interest was principally aimed at the representation of the new discovered lands, so that the national cartography remained in the background, except for some production of regional maps with the aim of strengthening the defences along the Spanish border. This situation remained roughly unchanged until the eighteenth century until it was felt the need to have a unitary cartographic representation of the whole country drawn up according to rigorous scientific methods, as claimed by the military engineer Manuel de Azevedo Fortes (1720). Throughout the century of the enlightenments, several chorographies were made, mainly by foreign authors. The aim of this study is to examine, through the most popular maps, the formation of the cartographic image of Portugal during the eighteenth century, in a period of great historical and political changes where the maps are perhaps the most original cultural testimony. Each selected cartographic document will be framed in the socio-cultural context that the product produces, through an analysis carried out according to the method of deconstruction of the map.
; Expedition into Sicily by Richard Payne Knight, the text subject of this PhD thesis, is the account of the journey through Sicily taken, at the end of the Eighteenth Century, by a rich Englishman, together with two equally wealthy watercolorists: the renowned German landscape painter Philipp Hackert and the English amateur Charles Gore. Believed lost for more than two centuries, Knight's manuscript was rediscovered only in 1980, and published for the first time in English in 1986. Aim of my thesis is to introduce this work to the Italian audience through a critical translation, and to point out its originality as well as its internal coherence. Referring to the studies of those who preceded me, I have tried to demonstrate the substantial unity of the text, along with the fact that this internal consistency was intended to convey a very precise message: freedom is a necessary condition for human excellence. This is a message clearly influenced by Enlightenment culture: the young Knight saw his journey through Sicily as a return to the classical origins of Western culture, a journey back in time to the Winkelmanian ideal of noble simplicity and quiet grandeur. His return to the origins, however, was hampered by the reality of Eighteenth Century Sicily. The experience of the present crept gradually into his conception of an ideal past, imposing to his watchful eye a reality of ignorance and misery. These dramatic conditions had been brought by a corrupted ruling class and a too powerful clergy, in other words by a lack of freedom. In the analysis of the scenes depicting his travel experiences (featuring at least two thirds of the text), Knight examines the dichotomy between past and present, and finally, in the end, he gives a more general form to his ideas, coming to the conclusion that Sicily could return to the greatness of its origins only after a revolutionary movement involving the whole of Europe. It's interesting to note that these reflections preceded of a few years the French Revolution, which, despite having profoundly altered the European balance, was not enough to bring out the Sicily from its backwardness. The first chapter of the thesis contains the complete translation of the Expedition into Sicily in Italian with the English text opposite. The second chapter: The author, the topic, and the history of the manuscript, is divided into two sections. The first section [2.1]: The life and works of Richard Payne Knight, intends to frame the figure of the author of the diary and provide an overview of his works, while the second section [2.2]: The long journey of a travel diary reconstructs, on the basis of objective data and conjectures, the genesis and history of the manuscript of the Expedition. The third chapter: The context of Knight's trip, traces the socio-cultural context of the trip to Sicily and is composed of five sections. The first section [3.1]: The historical context: from England to Sicily, briefly describes the historical and political situation of Europe, England, Italy and Sicily at the height of the Industrial Revolution and after the Peace of Utrecht. The second section [3.2]: The philosophical context: the English Enlightenment and the thought of Knight, traces the general lines of the European, English and Italian Enlightenment that influenced Knight before, during and after his trip to Sicily. The third section [3.3]: The artistic context: the rediscovery of classics between lights and shadows, provides an outline of the cultural and artistic contexts of the second half of the Eighteenth Century, focusing in particular on the authors who developed theories to define concepts like Beauty, Picturesque and Sublime. The fourth section [3.4]: The problem of time in the Eighteenth Century, focuses on the scientific debate on the significance and the age of fossils, which is linked, in turn, to the age of the Earth. This was the main scientific debate of the Eighteenth Century and it influenced Knight's ideas on time, history and geology. The fifth section [3.5]: The Grand Tour in the second half of the of the Eighteenth Century, presents an overview of the logistical conditions of travel in Italy and the motivations of the Grand Tourists. The fourth chapter: The analysis of the text and of Knight's thought, is divided into two sections. The first section [4.1]: Text Analysis, briefly reviews the stages of Knight's journey, discusses the scenes of the Expedition referring to the literary picturesque and to the social characteristics of Sicilians and, finally, draws the final conclusions of the trip. The second section [4.2]: The stereotypes about Italy, discusses Knight's position on some clichés that the travelers of his time had on Italians and, in particular, on Sicilians. Finally, aspects not strictly relevant to the topic of this work, which I have treated elsewhere, have met the interest and appreciation of the international scientific community. This is, in particular, the study presented at the conference in Valletta Encountering Malta: British Writers and the Mediterranean 1760-1840 (November 2011), in which I have proposed an original interpretation of Knight's historical thought, connecting it with that of the English historian Edward Gibbon's. The work has been accepted for publication by the journal The Wordsworth Circle.
The bowl, the robe and the scepter. Disaster, sacredness and kingship in Sri LankaThis article analyses the link between disaster, sacredness and kingship in Sri Lanka, exploring the role that the etiology of the tsunami played in the historical revival of the Dhamma-king model: a king who is the incarnation of a Bodhisattva, a living being pursuing enlightenment through altruistic practices similarly to a Buddha, and a Cakkavatti, an absolute monarch whose role combines promoting Buddhism in the world and simultaneously defending national unity. By unearthing traces of the tsunami in the literature of Theravada Buddhism and describing the revival of these mytho-historical narratives in the political phase following the Indian Ocean tsunami, I show how a specific image gained ground in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the disaster, the image of a cultural hero imbued with the tradition of Buddhist and Sinhalese sovereignty: a semi-divinized leader who succeeded in ensuring prosperity for his people and dynamically reuniting the kingdom under the religious values and ethnic-identity ideology that had fuelled almost thirty years of civil war in the country. The idea that regaining territory, wealth and prosperity were to follow a period of disorder and destruction favoured the electoral rise of the Rajapaksa dynasty, a leadership that took over the national stage by climbing the ranks of power from the margins of the "empire". The reckless actions that had materialized in the form of natural disasters were thereby symbolically cast as the beginning of a new golden age, one destined to "restore" balances pivoting on the unity of the nation while at the same time "reforming" a society with the potential to be virile, just and virtuous once again.
Within the borders of the national States the effective exercise of power is modulated through a plurality of territorial divisions that represent, at the same time, the architecture of the institutional system and the intermediate bodies of the centre/ periphery relations. These relationships gave rise to multiple centres of political government that are grafted into the game of scales, with variable geometries, of local territories, no longer classifiable in a binary opposition, affirmed between the age of Enlightenment and the first half of the Twentieth century. The analysis of this interwoven aspects (social, institutional, territorial) in which citizenship horizons coagulate, the political geography of institutional spaces for the government of the territory can unleash all its heuristic potential, revealing profiles partly unexplored for the extent of their social grip. The essay aims to underline the preeminent political nature of territorial orders, of the processes that govern the construction of the institutional mosaic and the design of the different boundaries. It critically reconstructs the state of the art of the themes – placed at the confluence of various knowledge – put to work in the research dedicated to the relationships between spatiality/statehood/administrative boundaries/ citizenship, starting from the studies of political-administrative geography. It then identifies the main methodological acquisitions and the stimuli coming from the advances produced in different disciplinary fronts. Among the many solicitations emerges the shared opinion on the opportunity of a critical genealogy of the thought patterns of modernity, relativizing many of the categories on which we have built the idea of the modern territorial State and the forms with which it has been represented over time.
The literacy myth has promoted the wide statal investments addressed to mass school throughout the 20th century. Nevertheless, such as cultural and political phenomenon, the literacy myth has in the Enlightenment its origins. During the school reforms in Austria and Prussia an anthropological distinction between literate and illiterate people strongly arises: the first blessed by rationality and the second enchained by an ancestral thought. This conviction shaped the history of literacy justifying a primacy of signatures in its methodological approaches. The present work aims to reconsider this dichotomous approach by the concept of «many literacies». If we can find many literacies in the past, that means that the relationship between literacy and rationality is not so sure. To understand the meaning of literacy as well as its cultural background we have to pay attention to the paths of alphabetization. Therefore, we have to connect literacy with the characters of a territorial school system and the ways through which learning literacy is possible. Even more we have to find out who are the actors setting up the offer of education (State, churches, local communities and so on). In its second part, the article exposes two opposite paths to literacy: the Austrian normal school system and the network of small village schools of the Alps. We can consider the first one a school system aiming to the education of a citizen inspired by the principles of the enlightened absolutism: industrious, dutiful, religious, and rational. In such a way the school - as well as the literacy - realizes a cultural colonization from the top to the bottom of the social pyramid. Otherwise, the alpine schools are a bastion aiming to content the colonization of the elitist culture; adopting literacy is a way, for the alpine peoples, to preserve their own popular culture - founded on the orality - against the penetration of the writing founded urban culture.
The analysis of the stages through which, between Revolution and Unity of Italy, the education system takes shape, open ample windows on the transformation plans for educational institutions and on the importance of the formative itineraries effected in eighteenth and nineteenth century Sicily. Against the sígnificant predominance of the high school and the teaching of the Jesuits, holders of a humanistic-rhetoric culture, the need to rationalise teaching, articulating it into a system of orders and degrees is the fruit of the meditatíons of Enlightenment pedagogy. The Prussian and Austrian prototype, that favours the creation of an organic, centralized and secular educational model, determines the birth of authentic centres of political and cultural transformation in Italy. The expulsion of the Jesuits marks the end a quo of agrarian reformism in the south and the end of the religious monopoly on the welfare institutes and education. In Sicily De Cosmi is the interpreter of a regalist, jurisdictional and popular reform, inviting constructive reflection on the end of the Jesuitical culture and on the plans to reutilize, in a broad sense, the patrimony of the Order. Between reformism and revolution the debate on the introduction of Decosmian schools, and the relationship between these and secondary schools reveal meaningful consonances with other aspects of Bourbon policy in its Tanuccian and Caracciolian phases. The introduction of the Lancasterian method will put the accent on the «necessity» of education available to larger numbers. The jurisdíctional demands and the revisionisms of the moment are to have a transversal effect on the educational system and on the opportunity or not of entrusting it to the control to the clergy. The method and the time necessary for the application of the regulations regarding the Catania case underline the sharp contrast that characterízed the hypothesis of a society, in unstable balance between past and present, caressed by a Bourbon monarchy that after the reformistic pressures, encountered the reality of the Restoration. If the reconstruction of the regulations could constitute a first interpretative scheme, the examination (through the cross use of bibliographical sources and filed records) of the scholastic structures becomes the essential reading key in order to penetrate the mechanism of the institutional answer to the central will. With reference to the basic framework regarding primary and secondary, public and private education, as it was structured in Catania between the eightéenth and nineteenth centuries, the distinctive characteristics of certain institutions whose purpose was the education of specific social categories: the Collegio Cutelli, dedicated to the education of the nobles, and the Ospizio di beneficenza, educating the disinherited, 'low people', 'beggars' children and waifs and strays, took on particular meaning. The hard way of life in the Ospizio, with its pedagogical plan aiming at 'professionalmilitary' instruction illustrates the extent of the abysmal distance from the refined atmosphere, impregnated with classica) studies and 'liberai arts', of the Collegio Cutelli. The school for the formation of future artisans and the school where young gentleman were shaped represent the two faces of the same medal. The model proposed by the Collegio and the one suggested by the Ospizio constitute, in essence, an emblematical point of arrivai of those political changes, institutional and social-cultural, that together characterized the formation of the modern state in the south.
; The philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer – one of the cornerstones in the 20th century philosophy – certainly represents a compound, prismatic and articulated thought, i.e. a philosophy made up of several different dimensions entwined with each other. A simple look at Gadamer's major work Wahrheit und Methode (1960) can already clarify this point, since the book displays a theory of understanding which takes account of three different dimensions of human experience – art, history and language – obviously conceived as mutually related. But this picture gets a lot more complicated if one takes into consideration the many books and articles Gadamer wrote before and after his magnum opus which testify the presence of other interests and topics in his thought. Nevertheless the complexity of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics has not always been recognized by his interpreters, who often concentrated only upon Wahrheit und Methode (in particular upon the problems of the Geisteswissenschaften) and gave no attention to other subjects (in particular the ethical and political dimension of his hermeneutical philosophy). Moreover it seems to me that many interpreters didn't pay enough attention to the fundamental unity – which of course doesn't mean "sistematicity" – that reigns in Gadamer's philosophy despite its pluralist and heterogeneous character. My point is that the many dimensions of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics – aesthetics and human sciences, language philosophy and moral philosophy, dialogue with the Greeks and critical confrontation with modern thought, reflections upon anthropological problems and observations concerning our actual sociopolitical, scientific and technological condition – actually represent the different sides of one thought centered on what we could define the malaise of modernity. In other words, it seems to me that the whole of Gadamer's philosophy originates from the consciousness raising of the critical situation in which our world finds itself today: a deep crisis which, according to Gadamer, branches out into manifold directions and various dimensions of human life. My interpretation tries then to give an account of both the pars destruens and pars costruens of Gadamer's philosophy, namely of his attempt to investigate and take a hard look at this critical dimensions of human existence in order to let out the point at issue and propose remedies, alternatives and possible solutions. In the first section – entitled Phenomenology of modernity: the various symptoms of the crisis – I explain how a great part of the 20th century philosophy has been concerned with the idea and the feeling of a crisis of our culture and our civilization. In my view Gadamer's hermeneutics too takes part in this global philosophical discourse. I try then to show and illustrate the various symptoms of this crisis analyzed by Gadamer, such as: socioeconomic pathologies of our bureaucratic societies; world-wide growth of the Western way of life to the detriment of other cultures; crisis of our values and beliefs (and consequent spread of relativism, skepticism and nihilism); growing inability to have meaningful relations with art, poetry and culture; finally, problems concerning the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the risk of an ecological crisis, and the disturbing, unpredictable consequences of some recent scientific discoveries (above all in the field of genetics). Once outlined Gadamer's critical view of our age, in the second section – entitled Diagnosis of the malaise of modernity: the spread of instrumental and techno-scientific reason – I try to show how, according to Gadamer, a common root lies at the base of the many symptoms of the crisis, namely the birth of modern science and its close, intrinsic relationship with technique and with a specific form of rationality that Gadamer – with reference to the analysis developed by such thinkers as Max Weber, Martin Heidegger and the so-called Frankfurt School – calls «instrumental reason» or «calculating thinking». I try then to give an account of the gadamerian conception of techno-science, meanwhile highlighting some aspects: first, how Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics should not be interpreted as an antiscientific thought but rather as an antiscientistic thought (which of course is something quite different); second, how Gadamer's reconstruction of the malaise of modernity never ends up in a "totalizing" critique of reason, nor in some sort of negativistic and pessimistic philosophy of history centered on the idea of an inescapable course of the events guided by a polluted, "irrational" rationality; third, how Gadamer – despite all the inveterate interpretations that read his philosophy as a form of authoritarian, traditionalist and antienlightenment thought – never aimed to reject the modern scientific Enlightenment tout court but rather to "correct" some of its tendencies and so to regain a wider and more comprehensive concept of reason. After having analyzed in the first two sections the pars destruens of Gadamer's philosophy, in the third and last section of my work – entitled Therapy of the crisis of modernity: the rediscovery of experience and practical knowledge – I take into consideration the pars costruens of his thought, which according to my interpretation consists of a rediscovery of what he calls «a different kind of knowledge», i.e. of a rehabilitation of the all those forms of pre- and extra-scientific experience that constitute the «hermeneutical dimension» of human life. My analysis of Gadamer's conception of understanding and experience – seen as forms of «practical knowledge» different in principle from theoretical and technical knowledge – leads then to a global interpretation of philosophical hermeneutics as practical philosophy, i.e. as a philosophical elucidation of the prescientific, intersubjective and "of commonsense" reasoning which characterizes our «life-world» and our practical life. But obviously this analysis also implies a special consideration of the ethical and political implications of Gadamer's thought. In particular, I try to examine Gadamer's conception of ethics – taking account of his relation with Plato's, Aristotle's, Kant's and Hegel's moral theories – and finally I sketch an outline of his philosophical hermeneutics as a philosophy of freedom, dialogue and solidarity.
