Environmental justice issues have been incrementally but consistently covered within this journal in the last two decades. This article reviews theoretical and empirical approaches to justice in INEA scholarship in order to identify trends and draw lessons for the interpretation and implementation of the 2030 Agenda and for living within environmental limits. Our review traces how justice considerations were initially covered within new institutionalist scholarship on collective action and social practices, to conceptualizing justice as 'access and allocation', to newer notions of planetary justice. We link these trends to scholarship on diverse epistemologies and typologies of justice, including conservative, corrective, distributive and procedural justice, and examine their operationalization within the empirical domains of climate, water and sustainable development. In concluding, we draw out implications for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. We argue that a just approach is essential to living within environmental limits, with greater synergies needed between collective action and social practice approaches. While justice can be unpacked for practical and political reasons into access and allocation, we find that (procedural) access considerations are more politically palatable in practice than a concern with allocation (distributive justice), which remains much more contested. As such, dominant approaches promote 'conservative' or thin market-based notions of justice. We conclude by noting that just allocation is a precondition to just access. A failure to prioritize and achieve more corrective and distributive forms of justice will, without doubt, contribute to exacerbating global ecological degradation.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a global pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, which has an enormous effect on human lives and the global environment. This review aimed to assess the global scientific evidence on the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on natural resources using international databases and search engines. Thus, the unprecedented anthropause due to COVID-19 has positive and negative effects on natural resources. MAIN BODY: This review showed that the unprecedented pandemic lockdown events brought a negative impact on the physical environment, including pollution associated with a drastic increase in person protective equipment, deforestation, illegal poaching and logging, overfishing, disruption of the conservation program and projects. It is noted that the spread of pandemic diseases could be aggravated by environmental pollution and a rapid increase in the global population. Despite these negative impacts of COVID-19, the anthropause appear to have also several positive effects on natural resources such as short term reduction of indoor and outdoor environmental pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO(2), SO(2), CO, and CO(2)), reduction in noise pollutions from ships, boats, vehicles, and planes which have positive effects on aquatic ecosystems, water quality, birds behaviour, wildlife biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration. CONCLUSION: Therefore, governments and scientific communities across the globe have called for a green recovery to COVID-19 and implement multi-actor interventions and environmentally friendly technologies to improve and safeguard sustainable environmental and biodiversity management and halt the next pandemic.

This journal examines the contribution of the Starbucks company to environmentally friendly issues that have an impact on climate change, especially Starbucks Indonesia. This journal aims to describe and analyze why and to what extent Starbucks Indonesia contributes to environmentally friendly issues. As we all know, climate change is a big challenge for Indonesia and the world. Starting from temperature changes, changes in rainfall patterns, drought and lack of clean water, extreme weather changes, to rising sea levels, climate change occurs due to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen oxides (N2O). To complete the data, this research will be enriched with primary data in the form of interviews and field observations at a Starbucks Indonesia company and use library research data collection techniques by utilizing secondary data collected from libraries, books, journals, articles, print media, electronic media, and websites. The descriptive-analytical approach was used to collect and analyze the data. The analysis of this research uses green theory and green marketing to find out why and to what extent Starbucks Indonesia's contribution contributes to environmentally friendly issues. Environmental issues are issues all over the world that often arise. Governments, organizations, and some groups have been actively holding business companies to account regarding environmental damage such as unusual climate change, global warming, natural resource degradation, and population. In this case, the aim is for consumers to have significant environmental awareness and become more concerned with green products and contribute to a green environment.

In response to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, effective 16 August 2017, the Taiwan government in recent years started to implement the sustainable material management of mercury-containing waste and articles. This was completed by a cross-ministerial collaboration for preventing the adverse effects of mercury on human health and the environment, based on the multimedia approach. The legislative or regulatory frameworks on the control and prevention of mercury emissions and releases have been established in environmental distributions, including air, water, soil, waste, food, and article (or commodity). Therefore, the central authorities included the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), Council of Agriculture (COA), Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and Ministry of Labor (MOL). Furthermore, the implementation plans covered the reduction in mercury-containing products by restricted use and bans on its use, remediation of soil and groundwater for mercury-pollution sites, control of stationary source emissions, environmental monitoring, and compulsory recovery of mercury from electronic waste such as waste lightings. A successful case study on the recovery of mercury from electronic waste using a thermal treatment, and its capture control by activated carbon, was also addressed in this work. Due to the effectiveness of source control in Taiwan, the annual reported amount of mercury emissions from the stationary air pollution sources indicated a decreasing trend from 1.989 metric tons in 2016 to 1.760 metric tons in 2019. More significantly, the ministerial collaboration in implementing the Convention in Taiwan also echoed the United Nations (UN) Agenda 2030 for sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Mining is one of the oldest economic activities of mankind. Within this activity, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is one of the most studied sectors due to its high level of environmental contamination and the social problems it causes. In recent years, ASGM in the northern Amazon of Ecuador has increased significantly, and studies that describe its current situation and impact are scarce. In this sense, the present study aimed to analyze the current status and socioenvironmental impacts caused by ASGM gold mining activities in the Cascales canton in the province of Sucumbíos in northeastern Ecuador. The methodological tools used in the present study were a literature review of scientific and gray literature, field visits to assess perceived impacts and an expert judgment to discuss the results and establish challenges. The main results indicate that illegal and informal activities continue to be carried out in the upper zone of the Cascales and Duvino rivers; 90% of local miners still use mercury in this activity, although it is legally prohibited. Among the main impacts evidenced are the contamination of water bodies, soil and atmosphere due to the use of mercury and disturbance to flora and fauna due to the use of machinery in the exploration process. Finally, the government should focus efforts on strengthening public policies to socialize the importance of good environmental practices in ASGM and the effects of the impacts on human health and environmental issues, all this with the support of social actors, such as ministries, universities, NGOs, ASGM associations and private enterprise.

Abstract: The agricultural and livestock sectors are facing several challenges to achieve the current EU environmental objectives. Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and ensuring that a great share of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium coming from renewable sources is one of the major policy goals. In this context, farmers are continuously looking to adopt innovative technologies and solutions that may ensure sustainable food production systems. The adoption process of innovations at the farm level based on the circular economy concept may improve resource efficiency, allow the reuse and recovery of nutrients, and reduce the negative effect of emissions on soils, water, and air. The farmers' decision to accept and adopt the innovative solutions depends mainly on the initial investments and return, benefits and costs, farm structure, farmers' socio-economic characteristics, farmers' attitudes, opinions and behavior and, external markets conditions among other determinant reasons. This study aims at identifying the determinant factors and barriers that affect farmers' adoption of several Circular Agronomy Solutions using a semi-structured questionnaire on an exploratory sample of farmers in 5 EU countries. Preliminary results showed that the level of acceptance of the proposed innovations is highly related to farmers' economic motivations and objectives. The cost of the investment, the return rate, the institutional support, risk, and environmental attitude play a relevant role in the adoption decision. Results of the adoption preferences may assist policy-makers in designing more specific and efficient measures and tools that may help farmers to face the current environmental challenges and social needs.

This article explores the paradox of corporations using social and environmental justice concerns to market products that are themselves made in conditions of environmental and social injustice, most often in the Global South. The effects of the fashion industry on people is two-pronged: 1) the unsafe and exploitative conditions under which many garment workers operate, and 2) the severe and harmful water and air pollution caused by fashion industry factories. There are thus contradictions inherent in the manner in which corporations, through their marketing, seek to foster feminism and environmentalism, whilst sourcing their garments from factories that operate in problematic ways. Using case studies of advertising campaigns from three Swedish companies, HM, Monki and Gina Tricot, we conducted a discourse analysis to understand the messages to consumers as well as the image of the company that is portrayed. Through our political ecology analysis, we suggest that the promotion of feminism and environmentalism is not consistently applied by companies in their own practices and could at worst be labeled green and 'fem washing.' These approaches can also be deeply problematic when they lead to the exotification of others, and cultural appropriation. We further find that the marketing strategies in fashion serve not only to promote the sale of products but also have the effect of placing environmental responsibility onto individual consumers. Compared to issues related to the economy, politics, social or military concerns, attempts to preserve ecology and the natural environment have a relatively short history. Anthropogenic environmental changes in many cases have a direct impact on one's quality of life and the functioning of urban centers, states and communities. Pressure exerted by human economic activity on the environment is demonstrated, above all, by reductions in air, water, and soil quality, worse acoustic climate, and limited access to green spaces. The most detrimental undertakings have a negative impact on the level of ecological security in cities are transport, domestic heating of buildings, industrial activities, and heating processes. The main goal of this paper is to identify the perception of the ecological security of the residents of the biggest urban centers. Urban environment security is a very broad issue. It covers both natural phenomena, where human impact is minimal, levels of urban sustainable development and attitudes of the city dwellers. Recently, citizen awareness of the importance of environmental challenges in Polish cities' development has surged, including awareness of the desire to live in a cleaner environment and to breathe clean air. The topic is more and more often discussed in public debate, above all during periods of peak contaminant concentrations. The situation serves as a stimulus for citizens to mobilize, often through various social movements while local governments take actions oriented at changing methods of domestic heating, more eco-friendly mobility and the enhanced environmental education of society.

Organophosphate compounds are ubiquitously employed as agricultural pesticides and maintained as chemical warfare agents by several nations. These compounds are highly toxic, show environmental persistence and accumulation, and contribute to numerous cases of poisoning and death each year. While their use as weapons of mass destruction is rare, these never fully disappear into obscurity as they continue to be tools of fear and control by governments and terrorist organizations. Beyond weaponization, their wide-scale dissemination as agricultural products has led to environmental accumulation and intoxication of soil and water across the globe. Therefore, there is a dire need for rapid and safe agents for environmental bioremediation, personal decontamination, and as therapeutic detoxicants. Organophosphate hydrolyzing enzymes are emerging as appealing targets to satisfy decontamination needs owing to their ability to hydrolyze both pesticides and nerve agents using biologically-derived materials safe for both the environment and the individual. As the release of genetically modified organisms is not widely accepted practice, researchers are exploring alternative strategies of organophosphate bioremediation that focus on cell-free enzyme systems. In this review, we first discuss several of the more prevalent organophosphorus hydrolyzing enzymes along with research and engineering efforts that have led to an enhancement in their activity, substrate tolerance, and stability. In the later half we focus on advances achieved through research focusing on enhancing the catalytic activity and stability of phosphotriesterase, a model organophosphate hydrolase, using various approaches such as nanoparticle display, DNA scaffolding, and outer membrane vesicle encapsulation.

The 2015 Constitution ushered in not only a comprehensive transformation of Nepal's government structure, but also a shift from a protection-focused approach to natural resources management to one that aims to harness resources sustainably. Nepal's rich water, forest and biodiversity resources would thus fuel economic growth and prosperity and help achieve the goal becoming a middle-income country by 2030.The objective of this Environment Sector Diagnostic (ESD) is to inform policies, investments and institutional capacity building measures in key areas of natural resources use and environmental management to support sustainable growth and prosperity in Nepal in the context of federalism. Thus, the ESD aims to inform investment projects and government policies and facilitate the implementation of the World Bank's new Environmental and Social Framework in the context of the projects it supports.The key themes of natural resource use addressed in the ESD are forest management, nature-based tourism, hydropower development, agricultural intensification, and river quarrying. For each theme, the ESD highlights the economic gains of more productive use of the associated natural resources, where possible through quantitative modelling, and points to investments and policy and institutional measures to ensure sustainability. In terms of adverse environmental impacts, the ESD focuses on pollution, including air pollution, solid waste including hazardous substances, as well as, road construction. It estimates the cost of pollution to the economy and provides recommendations to lower this cost. These themes were selected based on their current and potential role in the economy and their current and potential impact on the environment.

The increasing demand of modern societies for the production and use of chemical compounds coupled with inefficient sewage collection and treatment systems, results in an inadequate release of all types of pollutants in the environment. Emerging pollutants are potentially toxic substances that although typically found in very small concentrations can produce hazard effects on the environment. Due to their very small concentrations they are not yet included in the water quality monitoring programs neither in the environmental control legislation standards. Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPPs) represents an important group of emerging pollutants due to their continued increase in worldwide consumption and to their inherent capacity to induce physiological effects in very low doses, which raises concerns about the potential adverse effects on humans, animals and environmental systems. In this work, it will be presented the development and validation of an analytical methodology based in solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The method is validated through its application using real samples of aqueous matrices obtained from different hydric media (swimming pools, rivers and wastewater treatment plants). To extend the scope of the analytical method and thereby a more comprehensive study, the study includes five pharmaceutical drugs that belong to four different pharmacological classes, namely, an analgesic (paracetamol), two antibiotics (azithromycin and sulfamethoxazole), an anticonvulsant (carbamazepine) and a stimulator of the central nervous system (caffeine). A better understanding of how environmental factors shape plant structure and function is crucial for predicting the consequences of environmental change for ecosystem functioning. Here we explore the biome-wide relationships between temperature, moisture and seven key plant functional traits both across space and over three decades of warming at 117 tundra locations. Spatial temperature-trait relationships were generally strong but soil moisture had a marked influence on the strength and direction of these relationships, highlighting the potentially important influence of changes in water availability on future trait shifts in tundra plant communities. Community height increased with warming across all sites over the past three decades, but other traits lagged far behind predicted rates of change. Our findings highlight the challenge of using space-for-time substitution to predict the functional consequences of future warming and suggest that functions that are tied closely to plant height will experience the most rapid change. They also reveal the strength with which environmental factors shape biotic communities at the coldest extremes of the planet and will help to improve projections of functional changes in tundra ecosystems with climate warming.

PT Astra Honda Motor is a companyengaged in manufacturing Honda motorcycles. Motorcycle production increases seizing with thegrowth of market needs. This results in increased production of liquid waste coolant from themachining process, exceeding the capacity of Inplant Waste Water Treatment System. Machiningsection develop Recycle Instalation to process waste coolant to be used again in the machiningprocess. This research aims to design Recycle installation processing performance models with systemdynamics approach. Desired processing performance indicators are indicators of quality andproductivity of coolant Recycle process. The research method carried out by conducting a preliminarystudy, design of Causal Loop Diagram, Model design based on system dynamics approach.Verification of the model is done by determining whether the interaction variable models can reflectreal events. Model validation is done by comparing the results of model performance indicator withthe results performance indicator of actual processing. Several alternative processing strategies andpolicies expected to be made to anticipate fluctuations in production in the future while maintainingthe performance indicators of quality standards of coolant recycle and productivity of Recycleprocess.
