; Among the many atrocities that occurred during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina which included mass killings and ethnical cleansing was also the destruction of cultural heritage. This cultural heritage is a reminder of historical events and collective identity and is especially important in a multicultural country like Bosnia and Herzegovina. This thesis describes the necessary tools for understanding the notions of "Identity", "Ethnicity" and "Nation" in a historical context. This allows us to comprehend the problem and development of multi-ethnicity and the historical events that played a role in forming them. These influences on identity, the founding of nations and the cultural heritage started with the Ottoman empire, followed by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The shaping of identities was influenced greatly by the tremendous repercussions of the last war. The investigated area of my thesis is Sarajevo, not only a symbol of multiculturalism but also a city where mosques, catholic and orthodox churches and synagogues are all part of the urban image. This unique constellation, together with interviews of experts conducted in this city, presents the ideal opportunity to illustrate the influence of identities on the cultural heritage.Special focus is put on the political development since the Dayton Agreement of 1995. Because of the complexity and lack of transparency of this agreement only very little progress was achieved in administration. It shows that the ethnic constellation in the country with the aftermath of events since the last war in Bosnia and Herzegovina left many traces in terms of preservation and protection of cultural heritage. ; vorgelegt von Edna Dedic ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Diplomarbeit, 2018 ; (VLID)2679715
