In Bosnia-Herzegovina, good everyday relationships among members of different national communities are often described using the word "komsiluk" ("good neighbourliness"). Komsiluk is a result of the Ottoman imperial political order and differs from the notions of citizenship and nation associated with political modernity. The aim here is to examine whether the crime of cruelty, or the crime of profanation, is a distinctive form of political violence. What spurred this inquiry was the testimony (on which I have worked) of the surviving victims of ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia. "Cruel" crimes appear to belong to a non-historical & non-political stratum of meaning; they form part of the ordinary fabric of "trivial" events in times of peace & seem far removed from any historical significance. We therefore have to examine whether there is an anthropological difference between two violent acts, or between two possible meanings of the same act of violence, seen within their specific context. For such purposes, a look at literature is extremely useful for the ethnologist of crimes of profanation who is out to supplement the legal definition of crimes against humanity. The scope and nature of humanilarian emergencies generaled by civil conflicts and wars in Africa exceed the continental capacity to adequately and effectively respond to them. With the founding of the African Union and the drafting of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, the basis for collective action against genocide, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, it is a critical time to reflect how best to address issues of regional peace and conflict. This publication attempts to assist the ongoing discussion on the operationalization of the responsibility to protect by the United Nations. After summarizing the negotiation process towards the agreement in the Summit Outcome Document, the practice of the application of the responsibility to protect by United Nations organs and other bodies since September 2005 is presented, before providing elements for a comprehensive review of existing United Nations capacities to prevent or halt genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. Finally, the publication proposes elements for an immediate strategy of the Secretary-General and the United Nations departments, funds and agencies to facilitate the application of the responsibility to protect in practice in the immediate future.

Those interested in the file of human rights, whether in Iraq or the whole world, have been very interested in the file of minority rights. Most of the violations recorded globally have directly or indirectly affected the rights and political freedoms of minorities. In Iraq, we see much evidence of these violations. Sometimes they fall victim to the perverted and discriminatory practices of the ruling regimes, and sometimes they are at the mercy of gangs and groups outlawing religion. They are subjected to persecution and practice various forms of ethnic cleansing, marginalization and deportation. This study aims to identify the reality of the political rights of Iraqi minorities in the governorates not organized in a region.

This article critically examines the four frameworks commonly utilized to interpret the Israel-Palestine conflict: Israeli self-defense, apartheid, genocide, and sociocide/ethnic cleansing/settler colonialism. The article follows a pattern of presenting the political, legal, physical, economic, and social realities in Israel/Palestine that support each framework followed by a discussion of the realities that delegitimize the suitability of each framework for describing the ongoing conflict. The article concludes with a description of the fourth framework, the sociocide framework, arguing that this framework is the most suitable of the four for describing the present situation in Israel/Palestine since it acknowledges the importance of allowing the Palestinians to name their own experience.

The Syrian civil war has profoundly altered established business structures, a delicate balance of religious values, and long-standing ties between urban and rural areas. New networks, identities, and social hierarchies have emerged in connection with the war economy, the militarization of the public sphere, and signs of ethnic cleansing. Any formal end to the conflict is unlikely to halt the violent societal transformation. Co-existence will remain a major challenge due to the nature of the cleavages. However, an inclusive political system that ends the marginalization of the Sunni majority, accepts diversity, and protects minorities is a prerequisite for reducing the levels of profound mistrust between the different societal groups.

Party system nationalization is a crucial aspect of political competition. The territories of Eastern Europe have often been characterized by outstanding levels of territorial heterogeneity. However, during and after World War II ethnic cleansing and forced migration resulted in more homogeneous nation states, and these trends were significantly reinforced by bureaucratic, centralized communist rule. I present a systematic empirical assessment of party and party system homogeneity or heterogeneity in post-communist Eastern Europe and will discuss some major macrosociological and institutional factors determining the degree of party and party system nationalization such as the political consequences of social diversity and political cleavages, legacies of the communist regimes, electoral systems, and federalism.
