GENEALOGY OF UNIVERSITY ETHNOGRAPHY: DEPARTMENT, PERSONALITIES, TRADITION TRANSMISSION (TO THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF PROFESSOR G.E. MARKOV)
In: LOMONOSOV HISTORY JOURNAL, Band 64, Heft 2023, №3, S. 97-121
The article is a tribute of respect to the memory of Gennady Evgenyevich Markov, a major Russian ethnologist, archaeologist and historian of primitive society, doctor in history, professor of the Department of Ethnology, Faculty of History, Lomonosov Moscow State University. The authors provide a detailed analysis of the scientific contribution and life path of the outstanding Soviet/Russian scholar and place their narrative in a broad socio-cultural and intellectual context of the country and society. G.E. Markov's biography is closely connected with the history of the Department of Ethnography/Ethnology at the Faculty of History, Moscow State University and serves as a serious basis for reconstructing the genesis of university ethnography and its dynamics over the course of nearly 85 years. Such a long period of existence of the university department and its sustainable effectiveness in training professional staff were essentially ensured by the high qualification of scientific and pedagogical staff, reliance on solid theoretical and methodological foundations and interdisciplinarity, a combination of conservatism with flexibility and adaptability to the challenges of the time, the ability to preserve disciplinary continuity and ensure the transmission of the scholarly tradition. All these components of the successful development of university ethnology are subjected to a comprehensive and balanced examination in the article. G.E. Markov's biography in all its typical and special manifestations forms the semantic core of the analysis and presentation. The authors offer their view on complex and sharply debatable issues of professional self-determination, the logic of scientific discovery, the correlation between field and desk research, the influence of ideology and politics on scientific thought. The article presents the authors' vision of the prospects for the development of the Department of Ethnology, based on a harmonious combination of ethnological and anthropological approaches to understanding the disciplinary framework, unconditional reliance on scholarly tradition and its authorities, the need to improve the methods of training in terms of instrumentality and practice-oriented nature, which will allow graduates of the department to be in demand and stay in the profession.
From "Bourgeois" Ethnology to "Marxist" Ethnography: Strategies for the Advancement of Marxist Orthodoxy in the Early Soviet Period ;
The subject of the research is the historiographical situation in the ethnology of the early Soviet period and its dynamics caused by a radically changing political and ideological context. The basic characteristics of ethnology in the 1920s. were theoretical and methodological pluralism with the paradoxical absence of the Marxist direction, as well as high dynamics of theoretical discourse. The discussion on the methodological issues of ethnology that took place at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. became a natural development of the historiographical situation and at the same time a critical milestone in the development of ethnology. Young intellectuals, who can be called "Marxists", and their informal leader V.B. Aptekar' initiated a theoretical discussion, determined its character and direction: Marxism as the "only correct" scientific method was opposed to the conceptual constructs of "bourgeois" ethnology. However, the transfer of ethnography to the "Marxist rails" almost led to the abolition of the scientific discipline itself. The article reconstructs the context, course and content of the discussion; it considers different variants of Marxism, proposed by both "bourgeois" specialists and young humanities scholars; it also analyzes strategies for promoting intellectual positions. As a result the dogmatic understanding of Marxism prevailed, the discussion was forcibly stopped, fundamental theoretical issues were disavowed, and ethnography was reduced to the status of auxiliary scientific discipline.

Everyday Culture in Post-Socialist Period
; The Collection of Papers entitled ―Everyday Culture in post-socialist period is a result of collaboration between the Institute of Ethnography, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Institute of Ethnography and Museum, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The enormous political and social changes during the 1990's influenced also everyday culture of the Balkans states. After decades of hinder, and precisely in the period of crisis, two neighboring ethnological institutions, the Bulgarian and Serbian, started to cooperate together in the study of everyday culture. The Collection of Papers demonstrates the directions of the cultural processes in Serbia and Bulgaria, accentuating the differences and similarities among the two states, and also explains the deeds within certain segments of everyday cultures of Slovaks, Russians and Macedonians. 22 / Collection of Papers of the Institute of Ethnography SASA 22

Pitirim Sorokin's Motley Lace: Biographical Context, the Content of the Travelogue, and the Author's Value Priorities ; «Пестрое кружево» Питирима Сорокина: биографический контекст, содержание травелога и ценностные приоритеты автора
This article analyses the work of the famous Russian-American sociologist, philosopher, and cultural researcher Pitirim Sorokin, written in his young years and published in the newspaper Vologodsky Listok in 1911. Motley Lace is of interest as a text that is indicative in several respects; in particular, from the point of view of possible reasons for choosing the place of publication, the influence of the nature of the publication on the artistic features of the travelogue, and the realisation of the author's value reflected in the content of the text. The study of Vologda as a place of publication of the travelogue demonstrates the diversity of the cultural life of the provincial city, the breadth of interests of the readers of Vologodsky Listok which published Sorokin's travel notes. The article suggests that the author of the travelogue created it counting on mass but educated audience. He sought to win its favour and used imaginative means and stylistic resources accordingly, employing emotive and evaluative vocabulary, an informal tone of conversation, and simple and distinct first-person reasoning appealing to everyday experience. At the same time, the narrator of Motley Lace who appears to be a progressively-minded and honest intellectual uses the newspaper as a platform for the purposes of education and propaganda. Being a convinced social revolutionary, Sorokin denounces social injustice, reveals the shortcomings of the surrounding reality, and expresses sympathy for the destitute. He admires nature and people's talents. The work is constructed as an essay and documentary description of a real journey, during which the author observes life, meets and talks to fellow travellers and locals, and collects folklore and ethnographic material. What he sees and hears is not only recorded and displayed but is subjected to analysis and critical consideration from the standpoint of priorities and value preferences of the author. On the one hand, Motley Lace fits in several early publications that testify to the keen interest of the young scholar in the national, historical, and ethnographic life of the Komi-Zyryans; on the other hand, it speaks of his involvement in the political life of his time and of his growing interest in the sociocultural problems.
