This book covers not only the basics of retail food safety, but goes into great depth in key areas, including the control of important retail pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and foodborne viruses. Many different facets of retail food safety from farm-to-fork are discussed, including Retail Preventive Control Plans, HACCP, and food handler certification and training. Important new areas such as the Global Food Safety Initiative, which offers international recognition of established food safety schemes, are also described in great detail. Sanitation in the retail environment is very complex in nature, and this creates challenges when trying to develop and execute an effective sanitation program. These challenges, along with their solutions, are dealt with in detail. The chapter on retail food safety in Europe gives an excellent description of the hazards and controls in food retail and sets them against the European legal framework, using the United Kingdom as an example of their application. The book finishes with an examination of retail food safety risks for populations of different races, ethnicities and income levels, and talks about the need to better understand the barriers to food safety and sanitation that face both retailers and consumers who own and shop in small grocery and convenience stores. Retail Food Safety is an excelling resource for all food safety professionals working in the retail industry, food trade associations, all government agencies which have responsibility for retail food safety, and academics involved in teaching and/or consulting. --

A review essay on two books by Piero Camporesi, The Land of Hunger & The Magic Harvest: Food, Folklore and Society (both, Cambridge: Polity, 1996 & 1995, respectively), & one by A. J. S. Gibson & T. C. Smout, Prices, Food and Wages in Scotland, 1550-1780 (England: Cambridge U Press, 1995). These texts examine the relationship between nutrition, food, & quality of life in various sociohistorical contexts. Although Camporesi's The Land of Hunger demonstrates how material conditions affected early-modern Italian popular culture, his analysis of the "theater of poverty" glamorizes the performers' suffering; nevertheless, his analyses of the paradoxical images of hardship & excess as well as how food functioned as a determinant of social class are commended. Camporesi's The Magic Harvest continues the work of his previous text by summarizing the social import of food in early-modern Europe. Finally, Gibson & Smout's examinations of price setting in Scottish burghers, the rise of the potato & oatmeal as primary foodstuffs during the 18th century, & the influence of increased employment opportunities for children & women on real wages are commended. This book charts the authors journey as a cultural anthropologist through food resistance movements over two decades, in Catalonia (Spain), Australia and Venezuela. It brings important lessons from the field to current discussions on transitioning to just and sustainable food systems. In Australia, freegans consumption of garbage reveals the extent of food going to waste from commercial sources while people go hungry. In contrast, Venezuelas food sovereignty movement is part of an attempted national transition from a capitalist to socialist economy, highlighting processes of decentralisation, collectivisation, and government grassroots coalitions. The study of autonomous spaces in Catalonia illuminates how food sharing can enable people to live their politics, while highlighting governance, consumption, technology and use of space in food resistance efforts
