This commentary uses Paul Gilroy's controversial claim that new technoscientific processes are instituting an 'end to race' as a provocation to discuss the epistemological transformation of race in algorithmic culture. We situate Gilroy's provocation within the context of an abolitionist agenda against racial-thinking, underscoring the relationship between his post-race polemic and a post-visual discourse. We then discuss the challenges of studying race within regimes of computation, which rely on structures that are, for the most part, opaque; in particular, modes of classification that operate through proxies and abstractions and that figure racialized bodies not as single, coherent subjects, but as shifting clusters of data. We argue that in this new regime, race emerges as an epiphenomenon of processes of classifying and sorting – what we call 'racial formations as data formations'. This discussion is significant because it raises new theoretical, methodological and political questions for scholars of media and critical algorithmic studies. It asks: how are we supposed to think, to identify and to confront race and racialisation when they vanish into algorithmic systems that are beyond our perception? What becomes of racial formations in post-visual regimes?

This chapter surveys the sizable and growing literature on coalition formation. We refer to theories in which one or more groups of agents ("coalitions") deliberately get together to jointly determine their actions. The defining idea of a coalition, in this chapter, is that of a group which can coordinate agreements among its members, while it interacts noncooperatively with other non-member individuals and the outside world in general. It is hard to overstate the importance of coalition formation in economic, political and social analysis. Ray (2007) gives several examples in which such a framework comes to life: cartel formation, lobbies, customs unions, conflict, public goods provision, political party formation, and so on. Yet as one surveys the landscape of this area of research, the first feature that attracts attention is the fragmented nature of the literature. The theories that bear on our questions range from collusive behavior in repeated games, to models of bargaining, to cooperative game-theoretic notions of the core, or notions of coalition-proofness in noncooperative games. To unravel the many intricacies of this literature would take far more than a survey. To prevent our terms of inquiry from becoming unmanageably large, we impose a basic restriction.
This thesis presents the study and the implementation of a system that manages autonomously the configuration of a formation of unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. The purposes are to improve the safety and the efficiency of a group of military UAVs, and to fill the gap between mission planning layers and formation control layers. Formation flight is particularly suited for military applications in hostile environments, that require synchronizations on target arrivals or mutual support for jamming. One of the difficulties raised is the autonomous choice of the configuration. Our approach is to develop an intermediate layer, dedicated to the formation and to the management of its configuration, between the deliberative and functionnal layers. Once a configuration is specified, it has to be allocated to the UAVs according to the tactical constraints and the available ressources. As the safety of the flight is a prime issue, reconfiguration maneuvers are planned to switch between two configurations, with respect to a security distance. Solutions have been developed based on the Branch & Bound algorithm to solve the assigment problems, and on the A* algorithm for reconfiguration trajectories planning. Moreover, a formation control has been implemented, allowing to validate our approach, both with simulations and real experimentations. Multi-robot formation control makes prerequisites for a team of robots to execute complex tasks cooperatively, which has been widely applied in both civilian and military scenarios. However, the limited precision of sensors and controllers may inevitably cause position errors in the finally achieved formation, which will affect the tasks undertaken. In this paper, the formation error is analyzed from the viewpoint of information theory. The desired position and the actually achieved position are viewed as two random variables. By calculating the mutual information between them, a lower bound of the formation error is derived. The results provide insights for the estimation of possible formation errors in the multi-robot system, which can assist designers to choose sensors and controllers with proper precision.
Päivi Fadjukoff seurasi tutkimuksessaan yksilöllisen identiteetin kehitystä varhaisaikuisuudesta keski-ikään, identiteetin kehitystä ennakoivia tekijöitä sekä identiteetin yhteyksiä henkilökohtaiseen hyvinvointiin keski-iässä.- Myönteinen identiteettikehitys jatkuu varhaisaikuisuudesta keski-ikään, vaikkakin yksilöllinen vaihtelu on suurta, Fadjukoff havaitsi. Aikuisuuteen yltävät identiteetin pitkittäistutkimukset ovat kansainvälisesti harvinaisia. Identiteetin jatkuva aktiivinen työstäminen myös aikuisena on kuitenkin tullut yhä tärkeämmäksi yhteiskunnallisen murroksen myötä. - Jälkimodernille yhteiskunnallemme on tyypillistä yksilöllisyyden ja yksilön omien valintojen korostaminen, arvojen suhteellisuus ja sosiaalisten systeemien mureneminen ja uudelleen organisoituminen. Tällainen toimintaympäristö on identiteetin muodostamisen kannalta aiempaa vaativampi. Parhaimmillaan identiteetti on vahva usealla eri elämänalueella. Tutkimus perustuu professori Lea Pulkkisen käynnistämään yli kolmikymmenvuotiseen Lapsesta aikuiseksi –pitkittäistutkimukseen, jonka alkuperäisen satunnaisotoksen muodostivat vuonna 1968 kansakoulun toisella luokalla olleet kahdeksanvuotiaat. ; The present longitudinal study addressed the rarely studied topic of identity formation in adulthood, following the Eriksonian-Marcian research tradition. Contextual- and personality-related antecedents of identity achievement, as well as implications of achievement to later well-being, were examined. The study was part of the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development, and utilized data collected by multiple methods at ages 14, 27, 36, and 42. The original sample consisted of 12 complete second-grade school classes (173 girls and 196 boys at age 8); participants at ages 36 and 42 were representative of the population of Finnish citizens born in 1959. The 100 women and 97 men with information regarding five domains (religious beliefs, political ideology, occupational career, intimate relationships, and lifestyle) from three identity interviews at ages 27, 36, and 42 formed the primary sample of the study. General identity development toward achievement was demonstrated, although great variation emerged across domains. Progress toward identity achievement was slower in men than in women. Adult identity achievement was preceded by high educational and occupational status of one's parents in the family of origin and the participant's school success in early adolescence. Moderately early transitions into adulthood in family life but later transitions to working life (associated with higher levels of education) preceded identity achievement. Furthermore, high achievement was related to personality styles typical of reflectiveness, low neuroticism, and intellectual interests. Identity diffusion formed a counterpoint to achievement, and was additionally related to a withdrawn personality style and a comparative delay or failure in establishing adult intimate and family relationships. Hence, the most evident determinants of identity formation were related to education and sociobehavioral strategies. Identity achievement anticipated higher personal control over development, generativity, and sociopsychological well-being in middle age

The paper extends the basic Stiglitz (1982) model of optimal non- linear income taxation into a model featuring endogenous unemploy- ment and wages. This means that the government needs to consider the effects on wages and unemployment when designing the optimal tax function. The tax systems' effects on the wage formation and the unemployment rates result in new intricate redistribution channels. A key result of the paper is that the government may, in order to redis- tribute, use the marginal tax rates to raise the unemployment rate for the high-skilled and lower it for the low-skilled workers.
