In the digital age, we often encounter analog photographs as things that – after having been stored away, lost, or even thrown away – are (re)found. The fascination with such found photographs is reflected in a striking way in contemporary essay and documentary film. Found photo films are an essayistic documentary form that has emerged since the turn of the millennium: Films that work with left-behind, rescued, or found convolutions of photographic images, collecting, selecting, and placing them in a new context. They stand in a field of tension between popular aestheticization and re-auratization of analog media in the course of digitalization as well as a long tradition of cinematically reflecting the materiality and mediality of film by working with photography and found footage. Charlotte Praetorius explores such appropriations of analog photographs through a corpus of international films: How do filmmakers relate to photographic found footage? How do the narratives and the narrativity of photography and history intertwine? How is the photographic material arranged and staged? And how can the relationships between different media and materials be grasped? In doing so, Praetorius is also concerned with taking the forms of documentary and essayistic film seriously as a medium for reflecting on (media) history and at the same time also critically questioning them.

This book examines the ways that texts from the humanities have fostered particular approaches to knowledge by constructing different versions of a 'scientific ethos'. The studies contained in this volume reveal how and why different forms of scientific ethos have developed since the mid-18th century. The studies also illuminate associated styles of rhetorical argumentation.

In 1819, in the village of Wremen on the mouth of the River Weser, a coloured American was
arrested on suspicion of carrying yellow fever. Having been mistreated by his captain on the
journey from Baltimore to the mouth of the Weser, the sailor had fled from his ship and set out
for Hamburg. There John Brown - for that was the escapee's name - planned to sign on to
another vessel. Lacking all knowledge of the route and the language, Brown had decided to follow the dikes along the mouths of the Weser and Elbe to reach his destination. In Wremen he was put into quarantine, but treated very decently. The detainee was rather economical with the truth when interrogated by the officials. Whereas the latter were primarily interested in yellow fever, the American's chief concern was to cover up the circumstances that had led to his dilemma. He was afraid of being turned in to his captain. Despite this state of affairs, neither the officials nor the villagers regarded their involuntary guest as a cost factor to be alimented at their expense, but as a human being in need of their help. Accordingly, when he left they gave him a gift of money.
; The article recalls the eventful life of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Dunant, looking for biographical roots of his humanity and dignity and points to his achievements. It will also indicate the question of the importance of international humanitarian law in the relationship between war and peace.
