A recent study by Yates, Leehey, and Shisslak (1983) noted the dramatic increase of serious runners in the previous decade, and the authors argued on the basis of their research that serious runners shared important character, adaptive, and background qualities with anorexics. This paper extends and refines the researchers' analysis of their findings by examining the possible origins of these obsessions in gender-related problems of identity and role adjustment in American society. Of primary interest are why, when, and how such obsessions develop and what they mean in relation to gender, achievement, and success in America.

This paper reviews the limited research to date on gender consciousness from liberal, radical and socialist feminist perspectives. An emergent approach that recognizes both gender identities and broader social forms of gender consciousness as continually constructed by men and women in class and race‐specific practices within paid workplace, household and community spheres is outlined. This approach is applied to a study of Hamilton couples, especially steelworkers and their spouses. We focus on assessing expressions of one central aspect of gender identity ‐ the male breadwinner norm ‐ through steelworkers' shop floor culture and the attitudes of both spouses in steelworker households. We attempt to show how the male breadwinner stereotype is currently being both reproduced and modified in response to women's growing participation in paid employment and particularly the recent presence of women steelworkers within a presumed bastion of traditional working class masculinity.

Closely comparable survey data collected in 11 countries in the early 1980s are used to examine gender differences in political alignments. The results show that in 10 of the 11 countries, women are more conservative than men, by differing degrees. The exception is Australia, where women are more left-wing than men. The sources of these gender differences are shown to be differential levels of workforce participation & religiosity. Once these & other factors are taken into account through multivariate analysis, women follow the Australian pattern & emerge as more left-wing than men in 6 of the 10 countries; in the remaining 4 countries, greater female conservatism is substantially reduced. Various explanations to account for these patterns are discussed. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 50 References. Modified HA

This paper examines the different meanings that feminist theorists have given to the concept of 'patriarchy.' Two major conceptualizations appear in the literature: 1/ patriarchy as male dominance, a characteristic of society; and 2/ partriarchy as an autonomous system. Within the second school of thought, the specification of a 'sex/gender system' represents an important theoretical advance. I criticize representative treatments of 'patriarchy' for their reductionism, especially their crude understanding of social structure and their assumption of an innate male desire for power. I argue that if the concept of 'patriarchy' is to be given analytical depth, then its referent must be the integrated processes of generational reproduction, the reproduction of individuals in their daily lives through housework and motherwork, and the production of gender identity and ideology. More broadly, an understanding of gender inequality requires analysis both at the level of social structure and at the level of the individual.

In this essay we contend that the culturally defined boundaries distinguishing the pure from the impure constitute a central dimension of identity construction and maintenance. Moreover, in cultures characterized by forms of structured social inequality, those occupying positions of advantage and domination are positioned to reaffirm their situation through the management of identity violation, i.e. defilement. To develop this thesis we focus on the cultural identity dynamics of gender relations and gender inequality. In particular, we present data which permit us to define thresholds of repugnance and finicality by gender.

(GF)

Material gleaned from the Yiddish press, union records, & interviews (N not given) is used to examine the relationship between class, ethnicity, & gender in the Toronto (Ontario) Jewish labor movement (TJLM) in the interwar period, focusing on ways in which women's issues were systematically subordinated to class issues. This subordination is contrasted with the prominence the TJLM accorded to Jewish workers' specific interests as Jews. It is argued that both class & ethnicity were definitive in shaping the politics & identity of the TJLM, despite the fact that class issues functioned divisively within the Jewish community & ethnic issues functioned divisively within the working class. Yet feminism did not emerge, partly because of its divisive potential within both the Jewish community & the working class. It is thus concluded that the TJLM's emphasis on both class consciousness & ethnic identity inhibited the development of feminist perspectives. AA
