Ältere Lesben und Schwule wurden in ihrer Geschichte kriminalisiert und verfolgt. Homosexualität wurde medizinisch pathologisiert. Bis heute wirken sich das Stigma der Homosexualität und die gesellschaftliche Diskriminierung auf viele ältere Lesben und Schwule dahingehend aus, dass sie ihre lesbische oder schwule Lebensweise situativ oder ganz verstecken und sich sozial zurückziehen. In dieser Expertise wird anhand der marginal vorhandenen Forschungsarbeiten zu älteren Lesben und Schwulen gezeigt, wie traumatisierende Erfahrungen und daraus resultierende Ängste vor Ressentiments die subjektiven und objektiven Handlungsräume dieser Menschen einschränken. Anhand zahlreicher Good Practice-Beispiele wird aufgezeigt, wie der sozialen Isolation und deren gesundheitsschädigenden Auswirkungen begegnet werden kann. Es werden Projekte vorgestellt, die ein selbstbestimmtes Leben von älteren Lesben und Schwulen und deren (aktive) soziale Partizipation fördern. Aufgezeigt werden Ansätze einer flächendeckenden sozialen Teilhabe in Kooperation mit den herkömmlichen Strukturen der Seniorenarbeit und -hilfe sowie die explizite Förderung homosexualitäts- und geschlechtsspezifischer Selbsthilfestrukturen.
