First part of the book discusses the political representation of women globally. Why are women under-represented? The second part analyses quota discourses - pro et con. Following a discussion of the disparate use of the concept of 'effectiveness' of gender quotas, the book discusses the effect of electoral gender quotas on the descriptive, substantive and symbolic representation of women, based on recent scientific literature.
; Summary Gender and agro-ecology: implications for gender relations This paper presents the results of the study that in the places where the Agrarian Reform in Brazil takes place. We draw attention to those women who chose agro-ecology as the organizing technological model to make a productive and cultural contribution to the territory they live in. The chosen model is contrasted to the farming model that favors monoculture and the use of toxic products in agriculture supported by the "Green Revolution" that recognizes men as the subject of production and of farming property. The new model gives a new perspective to the production spaces and country life. Agro-ecology becomes a dialogue of knowledge where the cultural and social heritage accumulated by countrymen and women is the main alternative for the hegemonic model. The potentialities that agro-ecology gives to alter the hierarchical structures that culture has imposed for gender relations are highlighted in the study. Multi-culture, multi-functionality, exchange with specialists, participation in research nets and fairs, and the creation of production groups, among other factors, involve a democratization of the power spaces and quotas, as well as encouraging the development of capacities and of economic and political power for women, now as the main actors of their own destiny. The meaning of this approach to a new model for the ones who apply it is also included in the study. The methodology applied is supported by multiple case studies and the study of chosen social groups.
The following article summarizes the meta-analysis of policies towards gender equality in science and research across Europe spanning the years 1980 to 2008. Observed overarching trends in the research literature are summarized, including the impact of higher education restructuring on gender equality in science and research and measures for advancing women's science careers. The article closes by stressing three key challenges: first, the integration of gender policy assessment with theories of social change; second, the gendering of innovation policy; and third, re-addressing the question of power and political struggle in relation to policy.
Homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and gender violence in sexual-affective relationships appear frequently in the bases of bullying. The educational centres are more conscious about this reality and look for actions to prevent and eradicate this kind of violence. At the same time, international research states that bullying prevention needs a re-organization of the educational centre incorporating the work of all the educational community (students, family, teachers, etc.). In this article we gather data on bullying and its connection to gender, part of the Spanish legislation related to this problem is analysed and we conducted an international literature review. The main contribution of this article is to present orientations and actions that prevent and contribute to eradicate gender violence and violence for homophobia, biphobia and transphobia through the school organization and school management. Some of these actions are inclusive education, democratization of the centres, making visible and not trivializing violence, and mainly the community participation and active positioning of all the community against bullying and in favour of the victims ; La violencia por homofobia, bifobia, transfobia y la violencia de género en relaciones afectivo-sexuales aparecen con frecuencia en la base del acoso escolar. In recent decades our country has been acquiring a certain global touch that has allowed it to grow and expand economically, however, it is not quite right when we look back and observe that growth has also brought with it patterns of "modern countries" that distort realities and that far from contributing to the strengthening of families, the integral education of children and the climate of social respect, generate confusion between budgets essential for social welfare, such as biology and culture, respect and discrimination; these patterns are included in what we will call "Gender Approach", socially extended thinking that currently aims to impose itself.

This article introduces the photography as a structure of meaning from which to analyzes the real-literal and subjectivity. This peculiarity has been constituted as an ideal language in dealing with the specificities in the field of cultural practices, the construction of memory and gender identity discourse within the African context. We have analyzed the similarities generated by the first anthropological photo reports with the colonial continuum and posterior segregationist regimes such as apartheid in South Africa, exerting a hegemonic gaze away from the cultural and social particularities as well as race, gender, sex and sexuality differences. This has led us to the exploration and interpretation of the activist side of the current African photography, which analyzes the identity from all streams related to gender and racialist issues: racial control as biopower and social and political power over the body, sexual difference and sexuality. Under that rejection of the normative, photographs of Santu Mofokeng, Samuel Fosso and Zanele Muholi are visual demonstrations that articulate the conflicting nature of identity and gender in a scenario like the African which, rooted in a precarious political and economic order, carries systemic violence that manifests itself in terms of criminalization, marginalization and exclusion.
analysis of concepts such as equality / inequality is transversal in any study that is undertaken on current legal and political systems and their relationship with the problems derived from gender. It is undeniable that the rationalist and universalist framework in which the illuminist discourse on the equality of all before the law was formulated, today has changed and - most of all - is currently an obstacle to the adequate understanding of the present stage of the democratic policy of freedom and equality. The universality, the abstraction, the formal equality is not enough since in some cases they are even accomplices of the cruelest inequality. How can the law be an instrument of equality that is concretely effective in a framework of social action as fragmented, as diverse, as discriminatory and exclusive as the current one? Inquiring about theseissues implies, in a certain way, transversely crossing important analysis scenarios, such as equality, justice and gender.
