Las discusiones sobre el género en historia, lenguaje, literatura, artes, educación, medios de comunicación, política, psicología, religión, medicina y ciencia, sociedad, derecho y lugar de trabajo se han conver- tido en temas centrales del saber feminista contemporáneo. A medida que la investigación sobre el género prolifera, lo hace también la tendencia a suponer que el significado del género no es problemático . Sin embargo, diferentes estudiosas y estudiosos emplean el género de ma- neras notablemente diferentes. ; Discussions of gender in history, language, literature, the arts, education, the media, politics, psychology, religion, medicine and science, society, law, and the workplace have become central to contemporary feminist scholarship. As research on gender proliferates, so does the tendency to assume that the meaning of gender is unproblematic. However, different scholars employ gender in markedly different ways.

The article grapples with the question whether Plato believed that, in the matter of arete, the female psyche had a built-in inclination to immorality in a way that the male psyche did not, and was therefore assuch signiticantly different from the male psyche. It is argued that the evidence of the Timaeus ( and, to some lesser degree, of the Laws) suggests very strongly that he did, though fortunately the political consequence she drew from this (in the Laws) tum out to be positive rather than negative. Aristotle, by contrast,it is argued, while still holding to the lamentable theory of the inferiority of woman, talks of ditl'eringquanta of (one and the same) arete in male and female souls, rather than a difference in their very arete. ; El artículo discute la cuestión de si Platón creía que, en el asunto de la areté, la psyché femenina tenía una inclinación natural a la inmoralidad en un sentido que no tenía la psyché masculina, y que por ende era signiticativamente distinta a la psyché masculina. Se arguye que el Timeo (y en menor grado. las Leyes) sugiere fuertemente que sí lo creyó, aunque afortunadamente las consecuencias políticas que intirió de ello (en las Leyes) resultan positivas en lugar de negativas. Se arguye, por el contrario, que Aristóteles -aun cuando sigue manteniendo la teoría lamentable de la inferioridad de las mujeres-habla de diferentes quanta de (una y la misma) areté en las almas masculinas y femeninas, en lugar deuna diferencia en su misma areté.

The aim of this paper is to revise some of the controversies around the meaning of gender. To do this I am going, first of all, to focus on its birth in Beauvoir's philosophy, 50 years ago. Secondly, to remember, briefly, some of the formulations in the 70's. Thirdly, to take notice of some of the most remarkable criticisms to the distinction sex/gender during the last decades. Fourthly, to remark that the challenge of plurality have undermined the mentioned concept. And, finally, to refer a new way of conceptualizing it, due to Iris Marion Young, that promises to avoid the paradoxes of dealing with the puzzles of "identity politics" and "difference politics". We can rescue the meaning of being women, in the sense of a collective, and also the imperative of solidarity, dis-connecting gender of identity. The alternative is to think it as a social position. ; El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido revisar algunas de las controversias acerca del significado de la categoría "género". Tras arrancar de su nacimiento en la filosofía de Beauvoir transitamos por algunas de sus formulaciones en los años setenta y por las críticas severas que recibió la distinción sexo/género durante los ochenta y noventa desde distintas versiones de la teoría feminista. El reto de la pluralidad parecía erosionar la generalidad y utilidad del concepto. No obstante, una nueva forma de reconceptualizarlo, debido a Iris Marion Young, puede ayudarnos a resolver algunas de las paradojas en las que nos ha enredado la política de la identidad y de las diferencias. Podemos rescatar el significado colectivo del ser mujeres, y no abdicar de la exigencia de la solidaridad, si "desconectamos" género e identidad y pasamos a entenderlo como mera posición social.

Political violence in Colombia has a gender-differentiated impact on social life. during the last two decades, one of the most dramatic social consequences of the armed conflict among guerrilla, paramilitary groups and the army has been the forced internal migration of more than a million and a half people who, individually or in small groups, flee to provincial cities and to the national capital Bogotá. Women and men experience in a different way the uprooting, displacement and reconstruction of life. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the processes by which women and men rebuild life and renegotiate identities sand gender roles, as well as the aspects that must be taken into account for agender-sensitive policy for internally displaced people. ; La violencia política en Colombia tiene un impacto en la vida social diferenciado por género. Una de las más dramáticas consecuencias sociales del conflicto armado entre la guerrilla, los grupos paramilitares y el ejército, durante las dos últimas décadas, ha sido la migración interna forzada de más de un millón y medio de personas, quienes, individualmente o en pequeños grupos, escapan hacia las ciudades provinciales o hacia la capital del país. Los hombres y las mujeres viven de manera diferente el desarraigo, el desplazamiento y la reconstrucción de la vida. El propósito de este artículo es contribuir al entendimiento de los procesos por los cuales los hombres y las mujeres reconstruyen sus vidas, y renegocian sus identidades y roles de género. También presenta los aspectos que deben tenerse en cuenta para el diseño de políticas sensitivas al género, para las personas que hayan sido desplazadas internamente.

The debate about reproduction, in particular issues related to the new reproductive technologies and international adoption has touched many countries. People with enough resources have various options, poor women become providers of children, embryos, ova, and other body parts for the reproduction and adoption markets. This article examines the implications of this traffic in terms of gender and kinship. Aspects of this discussion have reached a political dimension, especially issues related to the kinds of controls that science, medicine, and social institutions impose on women´s bodies, and who has access and in what ways to these technologies, and who are the women who serve as providers of children. There is also an analysis on the transformation of families and how problematic situations become acceptable lifestyles. ; El debate sobre la reproducción, en particular sobre las nuevas tecnologías reproductivas y la adopción internacional, afecta a muchos países. Las perspectivas de los actores en este proceso difieren mucho, ya que quienes tienen suficientes recursos y desean tener hijos pueden escogen entre varias opciones. A su vez, las mujeres pobres se convierten en proveedoras de niños, de embriones, de óvulos y de otras partes de sus cuerpos para el mercado de la adopción y de la reproducción. Este artículo examina las implicaciones de este tráfico en cuanto al género y el parentesco. Esta discusión tiene una dimensión política especial en relación con el control que la ciencia, la medicina y las instituciones sociales ejercen sobre el cuerpo de la mujer y quién tiene acceso y de qué manera a estas tecnologías, y quiénes sírven como proveedoras de niños. Por otra parte se analiza cómo se transforma la familia y cómo situaciones problemáticas se convierten en estilos de vida aceptables.

This article analyses sexual and gender metaphors used in the political rhetoric aboutIreland produced by both British colonialism and Irish nationalism. Departing from BenedictAnderson's formulation of the nation as imagined community, the author examines theshifting of gender categories used in defining Irish identity. The author argues that the linkof gender and national identity coupled with the violent events surrounding the partition ofIreland had important effects on the lives of Irish women best seen in the policies implementedon matters of sexuality and family law that followed the declaration of independence. ; Este articulo analiza las metáforas sexuales y de género utilizadas en la retórica políticasobre Irlanda, producida por el colonialismo británico y el nacionalismo irlandés. Partiendode la concepción teórica de nación como comunidad imaginada, propugnada por BenedictAnderson, la autora examina los cambios de género que han moldeado la definición de laidentidad irlandesa. La autora sostiene que la conexión entre género e identidad nacional,unida a los violentos sucesos que acompañaron la partición de Irlanda, ha tenido consecuenciasimportantes para las mujeres irlandesas, que pueden identificarse en la legislación sobrematerias de sexualidad y derecho familiar que se implementó tras la consecución de laindependencia.

Se hace una breve evolución histórica de la mujer bajo el recorte analítico de género. De otro lado, se analiza las políticas públicas y de salud de la mujer en América Latina, especialmente en el Perú, desde el Incanato, explicando las, razones de la formulación e implantación del Programa de Planificación Familiar y del Programa de Atención Materno Infantil. ; This study includes a presentation and analysis about the woman's problematic. It considers the woman social condition concording to the androgynors ideology of the society. Briefly it presents a historical evolution of the woman in accord with the gender analysis. On the other hand, it presents too, an analysis of the health and the public politics in relation to the woman in Latin America, mainly in Peru, since the Incanato period, justifying the motives of the formulation and implementation of the Family Planning Program, the Responsable Paternity Program and Child and Mother Atention Program.

En este estudio se hace una presentación y análisis de la problemática de la mujer, considerando su condición social, de acuerdo a la ideologia androcentrista en la sociedad. Se hace una breve evolución histórica de la mujer bafo el recorte analítico de género. Se analiza las políticas públicas y de salud de la mujer en América Latina, especialmente en el Perú, desde el Incanato, explicando las razones de la formulación e implantación del Programa de Planificación Familiar y del Programa de Atención Materno Infantil.Finalmente, se resalta la importancia de considerar proyectos, programas y políticas de salud que no sean excluyentes y que no se refieran solamente al aspecto reproductivo biológico de la mujer. ; This study includes a presentation and analysis about the woman's problematic. Specifically, the author focuses on the contributions and constraints of the Anglo-Saxon perspective. The author suggests that although geographers attempt to overcome the contradictions of neopositivist perspectives, they often lack a complete understanding of social, cultural, and political factors necessary for full comprehension of interactions and processes.

Changes in modernity that led from a vernacular concept of gender to an economic one are discussed. Vernacular (applied in the sense of limited or subsistence) gender is taken as the uncomplicated division into masculine & feminine: two unequal subdivisions, complementing each other in an asymmetric & ambiguous way. Vernacular gender concepts are found in non-Western societies. In displacing the concept of vernacular gender & treating males & females as equals in the labor market, Western capitalism has proved to be highly discriminatory toward women, as evidenced in both paid & unpaid labor.
