International audience Beginning with the 1979-1980 lectures at the Collège de France, Du gouvernement des vivants, this article aims at a reconstruction of Foucault's shift: from a study of knowledge-power systems to an archaeological-genealogical analysis of the government of human beings by means of truth; or, better yet, a study of the relations between the manifestation of truth, the constitution of subjectivity, and the government of self and others. Therefore, it seeks to explore the meaning of the fundamental notion of "regime of truth" (in its connection with the notion of "truth games"), as well as the Foucauldian project of a genealogy of the modern subject in Western civilization. The conclusion suggests that Foucault's last series of lectures at the Collège de France are a way to urge us to undertake a "politics of ourselves", and consequently to get rid of the hermeneutics of the self, no matter whether Christian or scientific.
; The dissertation provides a genealogy of the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the black radical tradition through a reconstruction of the political discourse and practices of the main black abolitionists of the Atlantic World from the so-called Age of Revolutions to the end of the American Civil War. In particular, the black radical tradition is conceived as a peculiar critique of modernity. Indeed, black critique highlights the constitutive duplicity of modernity (i.e. European and colonial) and produces both a 'provincialization' and a transformation of the basic concepts of modern political thought (such as freedom, equality, democracy, nation). In this way, the research shows that black abolitionism is a political thought characterized by two elements: the subversion of modern spatiality and the "doubling" of political concepts. On the one hand, black abolitionism overturns the conceptual distinction between the State, as the space of order, and the colony, as an irrational and uncivilized place. In other words, it shows that slavery, colonialism, and racism are not peripheral moments of modernity but instead one of its foundations. On the other hand, black abolitionists used different political lexicons to communicate a struggle for self-liberation which had its own conceptual originality. The dissertation is structured in four chapters. The first provides a definition of the theoretical foundations of black radicalism in the XX Century, and is focused on some of its main figures. The other chapters provide a reconstruction of the political thought of black abolitionism, defined by three moments of discontinuity. The second chapter is dedicated to the black abolitionists within the American Revolution and the British abolitionist movement. The third chapter is on the Haitian Revolution, conceived as the fundamental turning point in the history of black abolitionism and its critique of modernity. The last chapter is on the African American abolitionist movement.
; The State is no more the unique actor of the political field. So, the globalized city is emerging as a new subject within the political arena. This thesis elaborates on the globalized city's concept through a genealogical approach. Within a series of tipping points, it shows the historical emergence of this new kind of city. The analysis focuses on many political thinkers that lived in that series of topical moments, from the ancient city to nowadays planetary urbanization. The dissertation is elaborated following the specific tension between the lexicon of the State related to the city. Than, it demonstrate that the globalized is historically become a form of govern, a society and a territory for the State. So, nowadays it shows some kind of autonomy in respect to it. Secondly, the thesis discuss the trajectory that goes from the World city to the Globalized city, passing through the metropolis and the global city. Each of this urban profile shows a specific assemblage through which it is possible to understand the transformation occurred in the economical and political relationships, and also the transitions in the war paradigm. The globalized city does not mean that every city on the planet is following the same model. Rather, it shows a tension in respect to the planetary urbanization forms. Instead, the globalized city is a grid to grasp politically the contemporary polycentric and multiscalar systems, that are crisscrossed by new asymmetric conflicts. In terms of methodology, the dissertation is elaborated on the boundaries of many disciplines, and it proposes a "seeing like a city" as a way through which to politicize the urban studies field and to urbanize the political theories. This is, finally, a way to gain more complexity on the fundamental link between social sciences and the city.
on 31 January 2020, the Minister for the Interior of the Italian Republic and the Minister for Security and Civil Protection of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire signed a declaration of intent to foster closer cooperation in the field of migration control and return. The text provides, inter alia, for the need to "carry out the relevant procedures for the return of Ivorian nationals in an irregular situation, using the competent services of the Embassy of Côte d'Ivoire in Italy to identify them". 1 the text and spirit of the declaration are in line with a long series of agreements which Italy has concluded with an increasing number of non-European countries, particularly African countries, at intergovernmental but also transgovernmental level (i.e. agreements signed between the ministerial departments or secretariats of the signatory countries). The identification of irregular migrants is a central element upstream of such flexible arrangements, which, by definition, require neither the approval of the parliaments of the signatory countries nor ratification of their implementation. Moreover, given their lack of visibility, their existence and their concrete consequences can easily be contradicted at political level. Finally, given that bilateral cooperation on return involves many unknowns about its practical and regular implementation, the potential (explicit or implicit) disruption of a flexible agreement by a non-European country is less burdensome from a political point of view for a European State. Over the last decades, Italy, like France, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany, has signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), administrative arrangements.
This article examines a Cretan genealogy present in the work of the Spartan poet Cinaethon (VII-VI B.C.) and reported by Pausanias (VIII 53.5). This genealogy considers Rhadamanthys to be the son of Hephaistos, who was in turn son of Talos, son of Kres the king of the Kouretes and eponym of the Cretans. Using new arguments in support of LudolfMalten's old proposal of reading Phaistos (eponym of the city of Phaistos) instead of Hephaistos, the article proceeds to the historical analysis of the fragment, evaluating the role of archaic Phaistos in the creation of a genealogy which exalts the name of its eponym as a descendant of the more antique inhabitants of the island, the Kouretes, and father of the «true» Rhadamanthys. The politico-cultural milieu of the genealogy is identified in the Phaistos of the end of the VIIth century BC, which made itself an autonomous polis and established a cult to an important figure in kouretic and pre-Olympian Cretan mythology, Rhea. From the end of the VIth century BC the establishment, in the area of Phaistos, of the motif of Europe and the labours of Herakles evidently marks the decline of the Kouretic motifs exalted in the genealogy of Cinaethon: Rhadamanthys becomes a son of Europe, Phaistos a son of Herakles. The construction of the so-called Temple of Rhea in Phaistos (last quarter of the VIIthcentury BC) and the assertion of the «Olympian» and «Heraklean» motifs (VI-Vth centuries BC) thus also become useful cut-off points for reconsidering the chronology of the poet Cinaethon of Sparta.
For the Belema people (Belep Islands, New Caledonia) the relationship between ancestors and significant places is one of utmost importance. Personal names, patronymics and toponyms point out this relationship. Their knowledge is strategic, since it is essential to accessing land and its resources (material, symbolic and political ones). In turn, the "place" of every person and of every group in genealogies and in topography influences the possibilities and the ways of knowledge transmission. The genealogical knowledge and the topographical one are inseparable and the Belema prefer topogeny to genealogy. Topogeny, being the recitation of ordered sequences of place names, often takes the form of a journey. Retracing the routes of the clans (on foot, by boat or through words), the stories and the geographies of every group overlap and take part to the social and political equilibrium in current Belema society.
