In this article I analyse prominent textbooks, encyclopedias and journals in the field of women's and gender studies and ask where the authors and concepts presented in these texts and sites of publication come from in terms of geographic location. This is inspired by the question: to what extent can gender studies be described as a 'multi-centered' field (Connell, 2011) and can gender studies take into account feminist concepts of knowledge production which favour the involvement of the greatest possible diversity of authors (Longino, 1990; Harding, 1991)? The analyses presented here show that being located at a North American or Western European institution still seems to be a crucial factor in authors being published and referred to – both in Western academic centres and in other regions. It seems that there is still a long way to go before various local gender studies communities can communicate on a more egalitarian footing.
Interactions between countries originate from diverse aspects such as geographic proximity, trade, socio-cultural habits, language, religions, etc. Geopolitics studies the influence of a country's geographic space on its political power and its relationships with other countries. This work reveals the potential of Wikipedia mining for geopolitical study. Actually, Wikipedia offers solid knowledge and strong correlations among countries by linking web pages together for different types of information (e.g. economical, historical, political, and many others). The major finding of this paper is to show that meaningful results on the influence of country ties can be extracted from the hyperlinked structure of Wikipedia. We leverage a novel stochastic matrix representation of Markov chains of complex directed networks called the reduced Google matrix theory. For a selected small size set of nodes, the reduced Google matrix concentrates direct and indirect links of the million-node sized Wikipedia network into a small Perron-Frobenius matrix that preserves the PageRank probabilities of the global Wikipedia network. We perform a novel sensitivity analysis that leverages this reduced Google matrix to characterize the influence of relationships between countries from the global network. We apply this analysis to the set of 27 European Union countries. We show that with our sensitivity analysis we can exhibit easily very meaningful information on geopolitics from five different Wikipedia editions (English, Arabic, Russian, French and German).

It seems that the time is the balance sheets. The Handbook multiply (Oxford University Press, Routledge), as well as the Companions (Wiley, Ashgate). In France, it remains faithful to encyclopedias and dictionaries, but they are hardly great teachers who write textbooks. In history of international relations, it is often due to the Duroselle updated by Andre Kaspi (1960), the 'Masson'/Girault-Frank (1980), to 'Milza' (years 1970-1990) and 'Armand Colin' by Maurice Vaisse (now in its thirteenth edition). While consumers for students, there are other manuals, but which seem insufficient to face feelings of fragmentation and balkanization due to the proliferation of publications (new books, new journals), themes and large collective projects Research also faces the emergence of thousands of young researchers resulting from higher education in full quantitative and geographic mutation worldwide. In fact, when compared to those of other countries, the general histories of the foreign policy of France are very few. Long dominated by the students of Jean-Baptiste Duroselle, who come from retiring, the 'French school' has expanded its many reflections and analysis fields. The aim of this paper is to underline a particular aspect, often underestimated, about the role of Historical Geography as an important discipline in defining future planning guidelines; this discipline, against current opinions who wants it more interested in antiques that in civil commitment, is more projected on the future than other geographical approaches (i.e. political and economic geography), which are often not able to study and understand lessons from previous historical periods to describe current situation, which is often presented as permanent and unchanging. This topic is mainly developed repositioning the eye of current geographers in the Age of Enlightenment and in the subsequent French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Ages, when Geography had an important role among scientific studies, especially considering its function in infrastructure planning for civil and military purposes, mainly expressed through the figure of geographer- engineers. The prominence of Geography is also put into evidence in 18th and 19th Centuries Encyclopedias, where geographic approaches show a close relation and complementarity with other natural and historical sciences, a relation that would be desirable also for current situation. La thèse implicite qui soutien cet article est que la géographie historique, contrairement à l'opinion courante qui la veut plus intéressée à l'approche «antiquaire» qu'à l'engagement civil, a une vocation pour l'aménagement du territoire; elle est, donc, plus projetée dans le futur que la géographie politique et économique. Cette dernière, ne sachant regarder au passé, ne peut pas se soustraire à l'horizon descriptif qui légitime l'ordre territorial existant, souvent présenté comme permanent et immuable. Cette thèse est essentiellement développée en plaçant le regard du géographe d'aujourd'hui au siècle des Lumières, à l'époque de la Révolution et à celle napoléonienne, périodes au cours desquelles la géographie a une position centrale qui ne sera presque jamais plus atteinte, et surtout un degré d'application dans les oeuvres de paix et de guerre qui s'exprimait dans la figure de l'ingénieur géographe. Le caractère central et totalisant de l'approche géographique se reflète aussi dans la structure des grandes Encyclopédies entre le XVIII et le XIX siècle, où les géographes révèlent des liens étroits tant avec les sciences naturelles qu'avec les sciences historiques, selon un modèle proche de celui qu'il faudrait appliquer aussi aujourd'hui.
