For the last 20 years there has been a growing interest in the geosciences for topics related to geoheritage: geoconservation, geotourism and geoparks. Geoheritage: Assessment, Protection, and Managementis the first and only reference book to cover these main topics as well as the relationship of geoheritage to other subjects such as landscapes, conservation, and tourism. The book also includes methodologies for assessment, mapping, and visualisation, along with case studies and colour images of some of the most important global geosites. This book is an essential resource for geoscientists, park and geopark managers, tourism and regional planning managers, as well as university students interested in geoheritage, geosites, geomorphosites, geoconservation, and geotourism. A gap exists between people and geological treasures which they have failed to recognised, in particular their scientific, educational, cultural, and aesthetic values. In general, comprehensive treatment on conservation of geoheritage is missing in the local context. Identification of geoheritages may be the first step to bridge the gap, but there is no workable definition to start with. Some overseas authorities may give guidance to identify the targets, so an inventory of significant geoheritages can be established to facilitate their protection and monitoring. The need for conservation of geoheritages is generally overlooked. There are specific authorities and legislation to protect cultural heritages and biodiversity, but not so for geoheritages, even for those within the Geopark, which may fall victim to rapid economic development, a more potential impact than the natural processes of weathering and erosion. A similar conservation vacuum is also observed with many stone monuments which share the same fate as geoheritages. On the other hand, a close relationship exists among the biological, cultural/historical and geological aspects of a site to justify inclusion of geoheritages in the current conservation regime. An integral management approach could be an effective strategy for conserving these aspects within the same location. Appreciating geoheritages in the field brings nice surprises to the curious, which underpins that geology can be made an interesting and lively study. The theoretical discussions have been applied to a case study on Po Toi. A fieldtrip worksheet was designed to serve as an example for students and other interested members of the public who are encouraged to retrace the steps of the author in an enjoyable learning experience. ; published_or_final_version ; Applied Geosciences ; Master ; Master of Science

Abstract
The paper states that geodiversity is the abiotic complement to biodiversity, and is considered to be the elements associated with the abiotic environment, e.g. geological diversity, geomorphodiversity, pedodiversity, hydrodiversity and climodiversity. Geoheritage is considered as the geological heritage of a site, but is here presented as the abiotic heritage of a site, and is related to geological heritage, geomorphoheritage, pedoheritage, hydroheritage and climoheritage. Thus, it is possible to talk about geological sites, geomorphosites, pedosites, hydrosites and climosites. Geodiversity and geoheritage are strongly linked to geology. However, it is also a new paradigm to geography, as physical geography classically works with abiotic and biotic environments.

Here, we present a three-step study in order to demonstrate the unique geological environment and international geoheritage significance of Dallol and Danakil. A three-year-long remote sensing campaign has been done to provide information on improving the resilience of visitors through interpreted, monthly hazard maps, and on following up the changes of geothermal activity. Over the same time, the first geoheritage assessment of the region for 13 geosites was carried out along with a comparative analysis of three quantitative methods (to evaluate the scientific importance and the geotouristic development potential of the area). Finally, with the input of the assessment, a preliminary geoheritage management plan was created for practical consideration by stakeholders toward a geoconservation and geotourism development, as well as a resilience system of this peculiar area.

Zbog svog geografskog položaja na kontaktu Panonskog bazena, Dinarida i Alpa Republika Hrvatska obiluje georaznolikošću i geobaštinom. Zakonom o zaštiti prirode zaštićena su ukupno 52 geolokaliteta. Važnost i vrijednost hrvatske geobaštine prepoznata je i u svjetskim razmjerima uvrštenjem Papuka i Viškog arhipelaga u mrežu svjetskih geoparkova UNESCO-a. U ovom je radu, po prvi put na jednom mjestu, prikazan cjelokupan povijesni pregled nacionalnog zakonodavnog okvira vezanog za georaznolikost i geobaštinu, pregled zaštićene geobaštine i nadležnih institucija u sustavu zaštite prirode, te izazovi i problemi na koje se nailazi pri vrednovanju, zaštiti i upravljanju. ; The Republic of Croatia is rich in geodiversity and geoheritage due to its geographical position at the contact of the Pannonian Basin, the Dinarides and the Alps. In total 52 geosites are protected by the Nature Protection Law. The importance and value of Croatian geoheritage has been recognized on a global scale by designating Papuk and Vis archipelago as UNESCO Global Geoparks. For the first time this paper presents a complete historical overview of the national legislative framework related to geodiversity and geoheritage. It as well, presents an overview of protected geoheritage and relevant institutions in the nature protection sector, challenges and problems encountered in the assessment process, protection and management of geoheritage.

This work presents, for the first time, an overview of the rich geodiversity outcropping in the São Tomé island, one of the two islands that make up the archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe, the second smallest state of Africa in area. Located at the equator, in the alignment known as the "Cameroon Volcanic Line", this archipelago represents a privileged area for the comparative study between oceanic and continental alkaline volcanism, and therefore between the subcontinental and suboceanic mantle. Ten geosites of São Tomé island were selected, described and evaluated on the basis of their geoheritage value and using a qualitative system of classification, which integrates both the meaning attributed to the objects by scientific communities and the public understanding of such meanings related to its social use. The selected geosites display different heritage values (documental, scenic, symbolic, iconographic and indicial) potentially usable for different purposes, namely scientific and educational, but mostly tourism. Geotourism can play a key role in the promotion of sustainable development in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, and the geosites here described are likely to ground a geo-itinerary on this "pearl" of the Cameron Line.

Promoting geoheritage using the Internet materializes mainly through the use of maps, posters, informational murals, or websites. This information is usually detailed and visually appealing. However, in most cases, there is little interactivity and a limited or complete lack of contextualization within the geographical space. The main objective of this work was to integrate information collected with unmanned aerial vehicles, georeferenced information processed in geographical information systems, photogram- metry techniques, and multimedia technologies to promote a better computer visualization of geoheritage. A working website was built based on panoramic photography, three-dimensional representation of the terrain, and multimedia information, in order to provide a pleasant way of promoting and interacting with field geology by using the Internet. The navigation through the information is based on 360° spherical panoramic images that are fully oriented and georeferenced. Their movement can be perfectly synchronized with the viewing of the landscape by using motion sensors found on portable devices (tablets or smartphones) such as GPS, accelerometers, gyroscopes, or compasses. These images can include the access to multimedia elements such as websites, videos, images, sounds, interpretation models, text, or interactive 3D terrain models, working as an excellent support base for the provision of an augmented reality experience. If used in the field, this technical implementation can act as an interactive guide for the interpretation of the landscape.
