Corporate governance is a concept that attracted the attention of jurists and economists in the US in the 1970s and 1980s. The concept then became widespread on the European continent in the 1990s. More recently, corporate governance elements have turned up in other fields as well. When applied to social institutions, this model is referred to as 'social governance'. The (corporate) governance concept can be valuable in the social area. The debate on corporate governance is much more fundamental than the debate on the relationship between shareholders and management or between minority and majority shareholders. The essence of corporate governance can be found in the pursuit of a situation of 'checks and balances', which gives the stakeholders the possibility to complement and control each other. This article analyses the different stakeholders in the social area, their legitimisation as stakeholders and the practicability of a social stakeholder model.

The rise of 'smart' - or technologically advanced - cities has been well documented, while governance of such technology has remained unresolved. Integrating surveillance, AI, automation, and smart tech within basic infrastructure as well as public and private services and spaces raises a complex set of ethical, economic, political, social, and technological questions. The Governing Knowledge Commons (GKC) framework provides a descriptive lens through which to structure case studies examining smart tech deployment and commons governance in different cities. This volume deepens our understanding of community governance institutions, the social dilemmas communities face, and the dynamic relationships between data, technology, and human lives. For students, professors, and practitioners of law and policy dealing with a wide variety of planning, design, and regulatory issues relating to cities, these case studies illustrate options to develop best practice. Aid fragmentation is widely denounced, though recent studies suggest potential benefits. To reconcile these mixed findings, we make a case for studying differences across aid sectors and levels of analysis. Our cross-national time-series analysis of data from 141 countries suggests aid fragmentation promotes child survival and improves governance. However, just looking across countries has the potential to blur important within-country differences. We analyse subnational variation in Sierra Leone and Nigeria and find that the presence of more donors is associated with worse health outcomes, but better governance outcomes. This suggests that having more donors within a locality can be beneficial when they are working to improve the systems through which policies are implemented, but harmful when they target policy outcomes directly. A survey of Nigerian civil servants highlights potential mechanisms. Fragmentation in health aid may undermine civil servants' morale, whereas diversity in governance aid can promote meritocratic behaviour.

The governance challenge of management succession is critical in the family firms. This paper provides insight on the role that the emotional factors as well as the founder's governance approach, have on successor selection in family firms. The successor selection is studied using game theory. The paper models games for both approaches of the founder towards successor selection and then compares both. The results demonstrate that the emotional factors determine the successor outcome. The founder's governance approach is essential to ensure firm continuity as well as secure that his preferred successor is indeed appointed successor. This is one of only few studies investigating family firm succession using game theory, and the first, to the best of our knowledge, to include the emotional factors as variables in the analysis. This paper also contributes to analytically demonstrate the importance of the founder adopting an activist approach to the succession process to ensure family firm intergenerational continuity.

Conventional wisdom maintains that the Chinese Communist Party is upheld by performance-based legitimacy. Yet what about procedural legitimacy? Analyzing national survey data on China, this study finds that governance procedures affect the legitimacy of subnational levels of governing, if not necessarily that of the national level. Good governance contributes to trust in local leaders, while corruption not only detracts from trust in local and regional leaders, it increases the public's willingness to protest. This reality was not well-incorporated into the core legitimacy-building approach adopted during the Hu-Wen era. Despite low priority and constrained governance reforms, the main legitimation strategy in the Hu-Wen era remained focused on performance-as growth and equity-even as the public valued procedural legitimacy. While performance legitimacy and traditional legitimacy are also shown to be important phenomena, this study highlights why these are fragile bases for legitimacy, especially considering rising modernization forces and economic slowdown.

This paper develops a game-theoretic model for assessing the relationship between ideological divisions in a society and prospects for good governance. Synthesizing the insights of the literature on political career concerns with those from the literature on issue framing, the model emphasizes that ideological balance-rough equality in the ideological component of utility the median voter derives from government and opposition-is the key to good governance. Polities which are ideologically balanced are ruled by elites who attempt to impress their merit upon the electorate through the provision of public goods. Ideologically imbalanced polities are ruled by elites who use public resources for their own consumption and who court voters through socially unproductive issue framing. The cases of pre-revolutionary Cuba, post-apartheid South Africa, and post-Pinochet Chile are used to illustrate the crucial importance of ideological balance for good governance. World governance is currently characterized by the doctrine of participation, which calls on nongovernmental actors to associate themselves with the adoption & implementation of international regulation. Generally speaking, the civil society organizations involved in these issues have responded favorably to the call in the past 20 years. However, openness is hardly a feature of international governance & many nongovernmental organizations are now wary of public coordination forums. This no doubt explains the current impact of a process such as the World Social Forum. The project ongoing in the Forum is ambitious & differs from everything previously attempted at international level to coordinate civil society. By betting on broad participation by organizations with very different sizes, histories, modes of operation, & origins, the Forum is working towards the emergence of a new transnational citizen culture. Die Dissertation ist an der Schnittstelle von Betriebswirtschaftslehre und Entwicklungsökonomie angesiedelt. Basierend auf einem Multimethodenansatz werden jeweils zwei Fallstudien in Vietnam und auf den Philippinen aus beiden Perspektiven dargestellt. Der entwicklungsökonomische Teil der Arbeit umfasst die Darstellung von Good Governance und Global Governance. Anschließend werden die Auswirkungen von ausländischen Direktinvestitionen und von Energie- und Straßeninfrastruktur auf Wirtschaftswachstum und Armutsreduktion diskutiert. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Darstellung von Public Private Partnerships. Keine Fallstudie liefert einen direkten langfristigen Beitrag zur Armutsreduktion, aber sie tragen zum Wirtschaftswachstum bei. Zusammenfassend kann festgehalten werden, dass die positiven Auswirkungen von privat finanzierter Infrastruktur auf die Armutsreduktion überschätzt werden.

Die Verfasserin arbeitet zunächst heraus, welche Bedeutung die Renaissance der Religion für "global governance" hat. Dabei wird erkennbar, dass in der Literatur bislang nur eine Facette von religiöser Verschiedenheit in den Vordergrund gerückt wurde. Daher schließt sich an die skizzenhafte Bestandsaufnahme der Versuch an, unterschiedliche Dimensionen von Verschiedenheit aufzuzeigen und daraufhin zu untersuchen, ob sie "global governance" eher zu- oder abträglich sind. Daraus ergibt sich ein vielschichtiges Bild, aus dem sich sowohl Chancen als auch Gefährdungen für das globale Regieren ableiten lassen. (ICE2)
